An interesting fact about Richard the lion heart and Saladin was that they actually respected one another. When Richards horse was shot out from under him, Saladin called for a ceasefire and sent two horses to replace Richards horse and make sure he was okay. They also tried to create a marriage alliance to end the war but the pope would not tolerate it. A shame, because if the marriage would have gone through, Christian-Muslim relations would have been drastically different than they have been.

The era of the Crusades was more complicated than many think. Although the Crusades themselves were ostensibly Christian vs. Muslim (or more accurately Catholic vs. whoever happened to have the door key to Jerusalem when they got there), the events which surround this: the Saljuq Turk migration into the Mediterranean is where things get interesting. In terms of factions you actually have Egyptian and Byzantine vs Turk (Christians and Muslims in the both disliked the idea of losing their sovereignty and as far as Byzantines and the Fatimid Caliphate you actually had Muslim and Christian working together. Also there were Christians among the Caliphate and the Turks. The Vatican made the Crusades a holy war for Christians (read European Catholics) but the greater geopolitical situation was much more complex and wasn't quite as Christian vs. Muslim as Pope Urban made it out to be.

@MrCuttysark1982
@MrCuttysark1982 Жыл бұрын
@@isisaphrodite3585 Egypt at this time was under the Fatimid Caliphate. They were a pretty urbane and somewhat multicultural lot who largely allowed the Coptic and Jewish population to coexist although they did still get particular over the Shia-Sunni split when it came to Muslims. They viewed the Byzantines as trading partners and largely viewed the Turkic tribes as barbarians. However by the time Saladin showed up Egypt had undergone a kind of Game of Thrones style internal struggle. This left the Fatimid Caliphate weak and divided and Saladin would capitalize on it and cause a regime change when he rolled in. For all the pop culture talk of the Crusader era being a titanic clash of Muslim and Christian, Saladin was far more interested in grabbing the sultanate in Egypt and his invasion into Jerusalem was as much a matter of setting up a logistical supply base for his plans to conquer Egypt as it was anything ideological. Jerusalem was a vital supply hub for Egyptian commerce and the last "gas station" you might say before westbound traffic pushed through the Sinai.

The byzantines actually retreated after 7 months of besieging Antioch, then the french took it and managed to also conquer Jerusalem against all odds. You also failed to mention that the crusade was actually a response to the destruction of the Holy Sepulchre by the Turks who had taken the city from the Abbasids (egyptians) and prevented christian pilgrimage in Jerusalem. Let's not ignore the fact the that at this time, for the past 400 years, Islam had been conquering from the middle east all the way to France.

It was mostly just a power move by the Pope to gain more control over Christian europe Also the vhtistian lands at the time were going through a population boom with alot of rowdy youth ready to spill blood onto he battlefield The pope mostly took advantage of this to point it towards the muslims lands Also months muslims weren't conquering france that was a long time ago They were pretty peaceful by the time the crusades came around as the arab invasions mostly settled down over 500 hundred years before and the great caliphates of the past rivaling China were no more Reality is the pope and a small band of zealots took advantage of a splintered region to carve out a small piece of land that they constantly lost until eventually giving rise to the ottoman hegemon that would eventually return the favour

This isn’t particularly historically viable concept. The Crusades can’t really be considered a war, more of a period of history or a series of wars. Saying that 9 separate wars with gaps in between is one war would be like grouping every war in Germany between 1748 to 1948. Most of them don’t even have the same purpose, they have wildly differing results, and they aren’t a single conflict. Some of the Crusades never even reached the Holy Land, like the Fourth Crusade.

@@user-wy1yb7zj1jit was not the most brutal war in history, and Christians and Muslims serve a completely different G/god. To say they serve the same god is disrespectful to both faiths. Edit: It is also completely ignorant to say that it could’ve been solved by discussing their differences, the Muslim armies had been massacring civilians for hundreds of years before the first crusade took place. Had it not taken place it is possible that Europe would still be in Muslim control to this day. Possibly the America’s too if they ever decided to travel to them.

Well not really. In history we call it the reconquista 100s of years after spain was retaken. But the earls and kings of spain who actually participated in the very slow process that was called reconquista did it to expand their territory not because of the muslims who had inhabited these lands. Afterwards we draw the conclusion but it was not their direct goal at the time...

I’m sorry I love the info graphics but this was bad. I am not a historian that specializes in the history of the crusades but I know enough to know there were major problems with this video. First of all the crusades were bad but they were far from the most brutal wars in human history. You animated the temple of Solomon which had not existed for centuries and no Jewish temple had existed since the first century. Minarets on the Hagia Sofia did not exist until it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in the 15th century. No mention of the Seljuk Turks at all in the video. They arguably were the single most important factor in starting the crusades. The fourth Crusade did not target Constantinople. Yes it was sacked by the Crusaders but that was because the whole event was a fustercluck that went way off the rails. The whole thing was framed as Muslims vs. Christians which at its most basic level was true but ignores political, religious, and social details that played huge roles in the conflicts. Most crusaders were not motivated by blind loyalty to the Church. Though that probably did happen in some cases there were many more complex and compelling incentives to go fight for the holy land. Such as forgiveness of sins, glory, the chance to get rich, social and religious pressure, fear of excommunication and other factors. Please just go read the Wikipedia page.
