i would go for the ais, the only possitive on the G is a bit sharper on 1.4, but on F2 -F2.8 -F4 is a matter of a personal preference... Plus the AIS is half the price

Good work. The AF-S 35mm f/1.4 is fare better. I used for years the Ai-S 35mm f/1.4 on my Nikon F4 at the time.

Thanks for the comparison video. I have owned and used the 35mm f/1.4 since 2002. I would never replace my AIS lens with a G lens because I use my lens on newer digital Nikon SLR cameras and older Nikon SLR film cameras. My older film cameras need an aperture ring and G lenses do not have one.
@diyextravaganza Жыл бұрын
That's a good point. Although good, G lenses have another flaw, they have built in motors that will fail eventually. Manual lenses need only a good service from time to time and they can keep going forever. Cheers.

What camera body were you using? Where these images JPEGs or RAW files?

raw files, I used a D800 and a D3x for the comparisons. D4s for photos shown in the beginning of the video.

Vintage lenses are the best, they last longer, perform sometimes better and are lot cheaper than their modern equivalents. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and tell your friends about the channel. Cheers.

I think the Fuji 1.4 would easily compete with the G in edge sharpness, but then again, it's a crop sensor, so you'll always get the best of the lens.
@diyextravaganza11 ай бұрын
Sounds interesting, I'll look for the opportunity of having a Fuji borrowed or something.

I think everyone is overlooking the beautiful building quality of the manual lens. And just look at the size difference! I think the older lens will long outlast the newer lens.
@diyextravaganza7 ай бұрын
That's for sure, I've disassembled more recent lenses and the quality level is many levels below the manual ones. I recently bought the first series of the 35mm 1.4, it is fantastic!!!

I think they work down to f90 cameras. Cheers

The G lens has better coatings and is a better performer @ F1.4 and maybe @ F2. The close up photos were interesting it look as if the AIS version maybe suffering from focus breathing, or I could be wrong there.
@diyextravaganza7 ай бұрын
Focus breathing is not a thing linked with the AF or I understand wrong?

Also, It is a matter of taste, I like all versions of the 35 1.4, recently I got the 1971 version, and I really like it's aberrations.
@lensman57627 ай бұрын
It has nothing to do with AF. Its a fuction of the optical design of the lens. From F2 onwards, I prefer the rendering of the AIS version, but as you said, why buy a F1.4 lens and not use it @ F1.4? At this setting the G is the superior lens.@@diyextravaganza

Ai-S lens is a bit more interesting imo. The 1.4G is obviously better performing, but it looks "perfect" just like any other modern, lens kinda meh
