In this video I compare the direct back view of Jason Belmonte, Osku Palermaa, Kyle Troup and Brian Valenta.
The “direct back view” is very rare but essential for quality comparison. I refer to direct back view as a view where the camera is in line with the direction the bowling ball travels. Every other angle is problematic for comparison for a back view.
These 4 bowler all share “the two handed style” but are all completely different. We see straight arms, bend arms, thumps in the ball, thumps out of the ball, 4 steps, 5 steps no skip step, extensive skip steps. But all 4 have 3 things in common: A lot of revs, a lot of speed and a lot of victories.
Belmo, Palermaa and Troup all have their ball inside of their head from the downswing on and Valenta has it there like the other 3 right at release. If you allow the center of the ball to travel under the center of your head or even further right (RH Bowler) you are unlikely to be the best you can be in terms of energy transfer.
A few aspects of the release position that appear to be important because all 4 bowlers share them is what you can take away from this video.
Important aspects at release position are:
- The right shoulder is very close to the floor
- The left knee is left of the left foot
- The follow through goes about to the left shoulder and doesn't go unnecessary to the roof (avoid it to let it go to the roof)
- Ball is very close to the ankle at release
- Hand is behind or inside of the ball
- the upper body doesn't jerk up (avoid an extensive up jerking)
So, you see that these 4 bowlers are very different, but share a few keys. Don't try to copy a bowler 100%, find your own two handed style, experiment if you are unsatisfied! But If you archive the mentioned aspects at your release you have a good chance to have an effective technique. As long as you can repeat it, so avoid unnecessary movement in your approach, follow the laws of bio mechanics and you are good to go!

Hi, sry that I answer late, yt didn't show me your comment. No, I definitely don't say that you should throw like belmo, meaning to copy him 1 on 1. I say in general throw how it's the most fun for you, I don't care if that's one handed, two handed, with or without thump, amount of steps etc.. But I advise If you want to have a high average to try to learn an efficient technique at least for a few decades rather than something that feels comfortable right now but is very ineffective. If you find yourself after decades of training 100 games or so a week for your efficient technique having still a higher average with your inefficient technique go back to that. It all depends and there is no one fits all answer to style.

123robert45 I bowl two handed Belmo is a hard act to follow his speeds and revolutions are ridiculous compared to a lot of us two handed bowlers

Interesting how Troup uses the standard 5 step without the skip step like Belmo and and Osku

He does do a skip it's just not so much a hop like Belmo but definitely way straighter and softer

I read comments (in Bowlers Uniting) that say they're back is feeling better after they started bowling 2 handed. And other say their arm stopped hurting after they started bowling that way. But a PSO here in Norway is warning kids about the bowling style, because according to him, your back could become a pain in the ass when you get older. I bowl one handed and my wrist is currently bugging me. Got pain in it. I'd rather take the pain in the wrist when I get older, than back pain. Apparently Osku's back is being a dick to him, and he needs much more warm up time than others. Why is that?

+ThomasakaDes Hi, you'll always hear different opinions on topics and the two handed style is unfortunately not long enough around to give a scientific 100% sure answer. First of all take a look at other sports where athletes use a spinal rotation under load, there are plenty, and nobody is concerned about it. Nobody tells the athletes that they should stop to perform their sport and nobody tells their kids not to do a sport because of spinal rotation if they really enjoy it. Ask coaches or physicians of sports teams or individuals in sports where you need a spinal rotation if it kills their backs, what do you expect them to say? One word to that further down. On the other hand there are experts who say that a spinal rotation under a big load is always bad. Now to my opinion: There are countless factors to consider: Your genetic is in the biggest. Also how would your two handed technique look like? How strong do you rotate your spine? How much force do you use to rotate it? How jerky is your technique? And how long are your arms and how wide are your shoulders? Of course if your technique would be bad like a big hyperlordosis with a lot of movement in it and a very hard landing after the skip step and a powerful plant of the sliding foot are all things that are potentially bad for the back. But some have the genetic to most likely be able to do it for decades without any harm I guess. I also experienced wrist pain one handed. My mistake was to rotate the wrist very extensive. Try this: Keep your Hand a bit on the inside of the ball, Que: Think of your Palm covering the left “end“ of the ball to the center of the ball. Then in the downing curl your arm as hard as possible also cup your wrist and then at release extend your arm and wrist as hard and fast as possible, then curl your wrist and arm again. Do not rotate your wrist much. There is a video of Sean Rash and he rotates his wrist also not much. Also try different drilling methods and systems and thumb taping. You could for example try Slowinski's drilling and thumb taping. To keep a healthy back you have to use it, it's in our genes. I'd recommend to do strength exercise you like, just do what is fun to you. But you also have to stretch unless you are very flexible by nature and in my experience and what I see more and more you have to do myofascial release and care for your fascias by using different techniques everyone can do at home. And if you bowl you have an asymmetrical training so in the strength training I'd consider that and look for a compensation. So if one side abs and lower back become stronger because of bowling train the other side harder with strength exercises, but that also depend on the earlier named factors. Also do cardio. I'm sorry I can't provide you with the 100% answer, you have to decide for yourself, but anyways try my one handed tip and see if it works. I hope it helped. ps. Grunt: Shepard. Shepard: Grunt. Wrex: Shepard. S: Wrex. G: Commander Shepard. W: Shepard, Shepard, Shepard. S: Wrex? Grunt? G: Shep-errr-d! W Shep-errrrrrd. ;-)
