Can these be used with amsteel instead of wire?

@@josephcrawley3095 No, the jaws of the puller are designed to grip the specific steel cable made for these hoist. Do not attempt to use with Amsteel, or even with other "standard" lay steel cables.

@bjswanner I purchased an ancient griphoist several years ago on eBay. Tirfor no longer makes the wire for mine so I went to a local rigging shop and they fixed me up a steel cable for it no problem. It has worked flawlessly over the years but is heavy as hell. A buddy who worked back country trail crew in Yosemite said they used amsteel in theirs but I've never heard of anyone else doing it.

@@josephcrawley3095 I imagine the jaws will grip just about anything of the correct diameter, but you will only get the full rating of the hoist with their cable or equivalent. I purchased a third party 7/16" cable for the larger hoist in the video from E-Rigging.com for about $100 out the door. Much cheaper than buying one from Griphoist.

Yes, the cable from e-rigging is exactly the one shown in the video. It is a third party cable, but is still designed to be used with a cable puller. My understanding is the jaws of the puller are design to work with a specific cable lay. I have no doubt it will work with most any cable, but I have no idea what the reduction in the capacity or safety would be.
