Onam is also the biggest festival of Kerala. Holi, deepavali etc are almost a big celebration in kerala. It is mostly celebrated by pepple having roots in different state

Thiru Onam is the day comemmorates the win of Dharma over Adharma. Ancient Kerala was a long land starting from south gujarat to kannyakumari. This land was once ruled by the grandson of Prahlada, which is King Mahabali. He is also a follower of Lord Vishnu like his grandfather. King Mahabali was so generous without any control over the resources. And he tried to invade all 14 realms, which is an Adharmik action. Deva Indra complained to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu took avatar as a dwarf intellect called Vamana. Vamana came to King Mahabali's yagnabhoomi to test King Mahabali and to destroy his arrogance. Vamana tested him by asking three foot land(this is symbolic). King Mahabali accepted the wish of Vamana. Vamana started growing and Mahabali started to become small. Vamana took 14 realms in 2 steps and at last Mahabali surrendered his head to Vamana took 3rd step. Mahabali realized his arrogance and Adharma. Lord Vishnu sent him to rule Patala (sutala) loka(realm). Lord Vishnu blessed him to become Chiranjeevi and allowed to visit Bhooloka once in year on same day. And Lord Vishnu blessed him with an assurance to become next Indra in next Manuanthara after Puranthara, the current Indra. In Kerala, people celebrates onam by worshipping Thrikkakarappan(Vamana), by placing long pyramid shaped mud idol at the centre of Pookkalam and by doing pooja rituals. King Mahabali visits every home. People welcomes King Mahabali. People serves Sadhya as Nivedhyam to Thrikkakarappan(Vamana), Mahabali, and their parivarams. And people haves sadhya as prasadham. Onam ritual is older than Islam and Christianity. At that time indian people were not converted and all were following local culture. Thats why all people in Kerala is celebrating Onam. ❤

Its the Brahmins Malayalam claendar is not even 2000 years old because when one particular group of Brahmins came to Kerala they made Kerala culture primarily based on Vaishnava traditions.
