Nice tutorial, thanks. I noted that this 2013 video was shot using a pristine 1999 Silva compass (see early Silva logo on the baseplate and letter H at the bottom of the capsule). Both my Silva compasses are from 1998 (letter G) and they're also in great condition. Compasses are long lasting and they don't tax smartphone batteries. IMO these are reasons good enough for me to teach map-and-compass navigation to my grand-daughter.

I do quite a bit of geological tracking, and I have to use my compass all the time. This was a very good tutorial of how to face the direction you want/need to go, probably the most important use of a compass in survival situations. Too many of these vids are way too complicated for beginners, like trying to show how to run in parallel, etc. but they never just show you how to go “that way” and what “that way “ is. Great content, thank you!!

Because of the coming micronova, declination is moving much farther, and much faster and so declination information is likely incorrect but there is still a way to recalibrate magnetic declination using the shadow of sticks recording the path of the sun---rotation of the earth has not yet changed. First stick will show East. Mark it with a sharp stick pushed in. After a few minutes you can mark sun shadow travel where the shadow has moved - Push another stick in to mark West. Lay a straight stick from the E mark to the W mark. Geographic north or True North is 90 degrees from the E-W line. With your compass pointing toward True North, note how far off your compass is now. That is your true up-to-date declination. My up-to-date declination is 30 degrees, 15 degrees off from the official declination for my area. More on micronova in my 2nd book, Surviving the Micronova: This Train Is on the Tracks is now available

Ee Haaa So sexist. Instead of appreciating or commenting on the fact that they had a knowledgeable and clear-speaking person give the explanation, you have reduced her to her gender, and infantilized her as being a "girl". Seems more like a young woman. I am guessing and hoping that she was chosen for this video because she is smart and clear spoken, not because of her gender. Because if you have a job that has nothing to do with gender, and then give that job to someone explicitly based upon their gender, would be sexist.
@MRCAParks7 жыл бұрын
Yes, @GodVlogger that is one side of the coin. The other side according to research states it's helpful to show our diverse staff to reach a wider audience. In this case, a female was used in this video. There are old stereotypes that "girls" don't like to be outside, only the men. By including females in our materials, we are hoping young girls see this example and know they too can do it! As @Ee Haaa says, it helps get girls in the game!
@GodVlogger7 жыл бұрын
MRCAParks I think it is sexist against women to see a woman/female/girl explaining something, and then to respond by essentially saying, "How cute, a girl knows how to use a compass!" which is essentially what the commentor did. Here's the difference… I say that the person teaching in this video did a great job. But the commentor would say that she did a great job, for a girl. I say that she is a great role model for anyone of any age who wants to teach, do public speaking, or learn about the great outdoors. Conversely, the commentor would say she's a great role model for little girls who want to grow up and be a girl in a video. I'm all in favor of equal opportunity for both genders, by removing obstacles and showing good role models (Like her). I think that's a way better approach than pointing out every time a female does something, and then calling her a girl (infantilizing her), and saying wow who knew girls can do that too! It's just too patronizing.
