Dave you are a treasure and a blessing. You will be remembered for your contributions even more than people like Kephart and Kochanski! I can't wait to take classes with you, I was hoping to actually take a class with a couple friends and my father as a bachelor party 😂😂😂 but can't afford that just yet, so now I'd like to take a class in 2025 instead!

Dave, I personally know many people who struggle with navigation simply because of the math involved. I try to explain on most base they have the reverse azimuth... and also I think that the terminology gets people as well. It's all relatively simple... and the declination always throws people off too. Even if you tell them they only need it when mapping.. they get confused. Great stuff Dave, thank you for helping us all help ourselves and others! This is how the world should work! Thank you GOAT!

Good video but I'm going to stick with my Army Issue Lensatic .It worked for me for over 20 years before I Retired and 11 years since I Retired from the Army and it's never let me down. I've had 2 GPS units and both let me down and twice I've had Cell Phone GPS get me lost right inside of a town .

I don't understand what is wrong with using the US military compass. I do get not having the mirror to use for signaling and seeing your face. But, what are the issues beyond those two uses?
@DavidCanterbury
@DavidCanterbury 2 ай бұрын
These is nothing wrong with them and I prefer them sometimes but for civilian teaching as well as accuracy these type compasses are better on trail, the US style compass was really designed originally for using in mils with a Map for things like calling for fire etc.. many of the more advanced groups in the US Mil went to baseplate and Mirror compasses before electronics got so fancy for movement over land and map navigation

I am guilty of one time, leaving all of my navigation instruments and know how behind because someone else knew the trails and knew the area. Bad mistake. Never again.
