Compass GPS install

This is not a tutorial, its just a video of some of my work at home.
I installed an Ebay aftermarket GPS radio in a 2014 Jeep Compass. It didn't have any installation directions but it wasn't too much work figuring it out.
Not shown is the antenna adapter VWA3B. I ordered online a week or so after I filmed this video. It’s a short wire with a light green connector that plugs into the jeeps antenna wire and the other end is the traditional round antenna plug that goes into the stereo.

The white one I didn’t use as there was no place to plug it in on the new stereo harness and I had to order an adapter to connect the antenna which I installed several days later, it’s shown in the new video.

Appreciate the guided installation, got this same unit installed but haven’t done the camera yet. Where did you connect the red power to and where did you end up grounding the black?

The red isn’t needed. I think there is a signal wire in the factory radio plug that tells the radio that the car is in reverse. There was an optional back up camera for the compass so some of the wiring is already in the car. I just taped that red wire off, it isn’t needed. The black I grounded with another ground behind the drivers side trim panel in the rear storage since I had that panel off already to Ron the video wire and tap into the backup light.

I should have added that information in the description, it’s there now. The only wire I needed to order was the antenna adapter VWA3B. It’s a short wire with a light green connector that plugs into the jeeps antenna wire and the other end with the round connector plugs into the stereo. I ordered mine online but many different stores carry them.

Check your harness wiring. Sounds like it's missing the 12v power.

i just installed this same kit and still need to run the wire for the backup cam (when I get some time). Thanks for the detail with how you ran the wires in the liftgate itself. I am curious though what pathway you took from the rear pillar to get the video wire back to the head unit. Did you go high (under the headliner), or low (under rocker panels). Just wondering if you had an opinion on what was easiest. Thank you

I went low under the door sills/ edge of the carpet. I think i ran the wire up by the driver door then low across the bottom of the dash to the head unit. It was a pretty long wire. The hardest part was pulling the wire through that rubber boot from the lift gate to the roof of the car. I taped as thin and smooth as I could and sprayed a bunch of armor all rubber protectant in the boot to help slide it through. The wire is skinny but the rca connector is kind of big but it squeezed through.

I just installed the newer version of this (4g+64g 10.1" android 12 unit) and its not getting power at all. everything is plugged in correctly but for some reason no power to the unit... my last unit (Boss BV965NV navigation system) popped and started smoking from the cd slot so i wonder if something fried.

It’s still working well. The backup camera is pretty nice, we like it. It’s my daughters car. She has her phone Bluetooth connected to it for her music and hands free phone calls through the stereo. The back up cam part was the hardest part, the rest was about typical of a stereo install. The gps antenna is still working well even under the dash where I placed it in the video. The stereo volume always starts at a certain level at each startup but it can be programmed to auto start up at a low level.

My backup cam doesnt display any guide lines. I tried to find it in the settings but no luck. Any help?

My back up grid was there when I first selected reverse. I like it and never tried to turn it off. When in reverse if I touch the middle of the display screen a menu pops up to adjust lighting but I don’t see any option to turn the grid on or off.

Hey, great video! Quick question, could you elaborate on why you said the extra red wire at 10:28 is optional? If you didn’t put it in the harness, how does the radio know to go to reverse camera when car is in reverse? Thanks!

Because this car had an optional back up cam from the factory Something in the cars radio wiring already sends a signal to the radio

That’s not good. I’d check all the connections. Unplug and plug back in the stereo plugs maybe one came loose.

Where did you run the wire for the backup camera? Dis you run it openly through the car up to the front?

I pushed/tucked it under the side panels and door sill panels on the driver side then zip tied to other wires at the bottom of the dash on the back side enough so the wire wasn’t hanging and it’s hidden. Then it hangs out of the stereo hole where it’s bundled up with the rest of the stereo wiring.

My daughter found it on eBay. Look up Jeep Compass (your car Year) GPS stereo and dozens will pop up. The one my daughter bought was like $120 three or so years ago.

It’s ok, I’d say it’s about the same as the stock radio. We didn’t change any of the speakers they are the 9 year old originals. I’m not a big stereo person, no amps, subs, or upgraded or added speakers. It’s my daughters car and she is still pretty happy with it.

Just installed one of these in a 2015 Jeep compass. Do you have any idea on how to get it to work with factory reverse camera? After I installed the radio, I put it in reverse just to see, it popped up like the camera was going to come on but it just showed a black screen with the indicator lines. Thanks

I’m not sure but I think the two little 1” yellow wires hanging out of the 2 wire (black & yellow) connector that came with the stereo need to be connected to the Jeep harness that has the camera wire in it. My Jeep didn’t have the factory back up camera or nav computer and I think I have a different stereo harness than the better equipped jeeps came with.

My volume controls do not work, the radio comes on and the sound is high but the screen bar will move down but the sound still stays the same even if try to increase the volume. What am I missing here?

You said the sound is high, are the speakers producing sound or does the display indicate the volume is high but the speakers have no sound at all?

@@bhwjrproductions the pre-set was loud and the volume control would not respond. A tech with the manufacture of the unit got me fixed, seems that it was set up for a 2017 Compass and I was unaware all you had to do was turn that year off, duh. Works great now.

I just installed one of these in our Jeep Patriot... Really wanted to love it but the sound quality is horrible... Very muffled and sounds like it's in a box. Everything was plug and play. Had the sound been good I could have worked with some of the quirks... shame really

You need to set the EQ. I have the same one as the sound quality is amazing.

@@jsparrowau yep did that. Literally tried every setting including the developer ones. It didn't change anything. I then got a different one in the sound quality was improved but still not great. I think the one unit that I got was a dud or something was wrong with it. I'm actually sitting on about four of these now lol. They're good with certain aspects but they're also bad in others... I wish I'd made manufacture would make something just like this and then it would be superior quality.

This unit didn’t come with a microphone and I don’t know if it has an input for one, I didn’t see anything labeled as such.

So I have this radio for a few months now and ive had some issues, like drained battery, my check engine light came on unplugged the radio finally and started the car and check engine light went away, have you had any of those issues

No, we’ve had no problems with this radio at all, no check engine lights and no battery problems. I think The back up cam is either dirty or the lens is slightly cloudy because the image doesn’t seem to be as clear as when I first installed it, that’s the only complaint. It’s my daughters car. She is still driving it daily about 500 miles a week.

The power is part of the main plug going into the stereo. I got a stereo adapter harness to adapt the Jeep radio plugs to the stereo and an antenna adapter because that didn’t fit.

Mine (it’s my daughters Jeep) loses a little time on the clock. When it sits for a day or 2 the radio clock is about 5 or so minutes behind but it immediately updates when it connects to her phone. We’ve had no other reset issues.

The big rectangle plug with only 3 wires in it, It’s still in there. It dropped just out of view where the back of the original stereo was. It isn’t connected to anything. I should have zip tied it to the rest of the radio wires just to keep them together.

Double check that all the plugs are fully seated in the back of the radio and at the adapter harness. There is a menu to set the volume at a preset level at every startup of the car. Check to see if it might be set at 0 volume. Does the GPS voice come through your speakers?

My daughters google maps gps is waiting for an online update and won’t run until it gets one. She likes her phone gps and never updated it. The iGo navigation works pretty well. There is a screen that shows altitude speed and a compass heading. All of those work well. I’m pretty sure your phone can Bluetooth link to the stereo which would display your phone info

I haven’t had any problems at all with this stereo, and no battery draining. It plugs into the car’s radio plug. I didn’t add any power wires or tap into any other wires. Maybe you could pull the stereo fuse from your cars fuse panel for a couple of days to see if it’s the stereo circuit that’s running your battery down?

The stereo has been working well, no complaints. The stereo wiring adapter we bought on Walmart.com, that made it virtually plug and play. It is a Chrysler stereo adapter.

I have no battery draining problems. It’s usually driven every day but it’s often parked for the weekend. Recently it sat in an airport parking lot for 6 days and started right up.

I have a Jeep Compass Sport. It’s a base model with the base low end stereo, and the steering wheel doesn’t have the radio control buttons. The backup camera works as it should and the radio automatically mutes when in reverse but the volume must be adjusted manually.

How did you drill the Camera on the back?

I took the interior panel off the lift gate and unscrewed that handle piece and pulled it out enough to file an opening for the wire to pass in. I ran the wire with the license plate light wire through the lift gate. I drilled 2 small holes straight up to mount the camera. All this is in a plastic part so I wasn’t worried at all about rust.

The radio was found on eBay. My daughter found it by searching for a gps for a Jeep Compass and this is the first one she found. I don’t remember any brand name or model number for it. Everything that came in the kit is in the video.

Did the gps work with the antenna behind the head unit?

Yes, its working very well, it’s stuck with double sided tape (VHB tape works really well for me). The gps is as far forward as I could reach and everything in the dash looked like plastic. The windshield has a decent slope to it and I thought the antenna had a good look straight up through plastic and glass and not much metal. I wanted to hide the wire and didn’t want to poke a hole in the car creating a leak. I’m not a professional at this, just a guy who likes to work on cars.

Thanks Bruce. I bought the same unit. My unit will only turn on if I take out and reinsert the radio fuse from under the hood. Once I do that the radio will turn on and I am also able to turn the jeep off and on with the stereo coming back on. If I leave the jeep for an hour or so and come back, when I start the car the stereo doesn't turn on. I have to then pop the hood again take out the fuse and reinsert it for the radio to start. The radio fuse isn't blown from under the hood. I am really stuck here. I'm no pro either. Any tips would be helpful or if you know anyone who may have an idea what's happening. Thanks

@@mklew93 That’s weird. When I plugged mine in it turned on with the touch screen. I did a quick test just plugging in the wires to the unit to see if it would work and it worked perfectly. Then I put the original stuff back to video it. The camera wire routing took the longest. I had the radio in and out several times fit checking then one last time when the antenna adapter came in a few days later. The stereo flipped over to back up cam and the radio volume mutes when the car goes into reverse. It all just worked. I’m puzzled about the fuse thing. Is there something I could look at on my radio that could help you?

Yes it works well. It seems to be well connected. If I speed even 1 mph over the limit it tells me that I’m going too fast. The backup cam is pretty awesome too.

This is my daughters Jeep and she has an iPhone which links to this stereo headunit through Bluetooth. I know it will play music and run phone calls from the iPhone.

The stereo was around $150 on eBay. The only things I needed to buy were the stereo wire adapter from Walmart, it was $15 or so and the Chrysler antenna adapter from eBay was about $10. I already had electrical tape, zip ties and a couple of screws for the backup cam. Everything else was included with the stereo.
