I think another understated aspect of Judeau's character is his relationship with Griffith. He seems to be the only member besides Guts who doesn't worship Griffith and is aware of his dark side. I don't even get the impression that Judea thinks Griffith is a good person, but he knows Griffith can accomplish great things.

Judeau is my most favorite character in Berserk. I don't think that Judeau didn't pursue Casca because he felt he wasn't good enough, but more because his extreme empathy and understanding of people made him recognize her unwavering loyalty to Griffith to the point where (until Guts) she would never give herself to anyone else. She didn't even get close to other Hawk members, really- and there's something to be said about her being an outsider both in gender and in race as well. She was in the Hawks only for Griffith. She led them after his capture only in the hopes of rescuing him... I truly believe that Judeau is one of the only characters in Berserk that doesn't use or stereotype Casca. She's not just bound by her gender. She's not a sword to fight for Griffith, or a hot water bottle to warm Guts and keep him alive. She's not a reason to seek revenge. She's not a sex object. Judeau genuinely loves Casca and because his love for her is so untouched by selfishness or prejudice, he only wants her happiness.

This was a beautiful tribute to his character ❤

LexieDi came here to say this, but you said it better than I ever could have. Judeau must have known that Casca could never feel the same way. Casca is the type who wouldn't cry in front of the other band members; expect Guts, Griffith, and Judeau. For Judaeu specifically, I think it proves how much trust she has of him. When he said his last words to Casca, I don't think it was heartbreaking just because he couldn't confess, but the trust and 'maybe some sort of love' that Casca had for him hit her harder than we think. Both had a comfortable trusting relationship with each other. JudaeuXCasca will touch many hearts.

His character had a warmer charm to it than Griffith's coldness, and his death was one of the most memorable thus far in the story. I kind of hope that later in the story, Guts briefly has a way to temporarily reunite or at least see his old friends before the climax of the manga.

When he died, I honestly just couldn’t deal, the smartest, most heartfelt, tragic and notable of the hawks. Well, that was depressing.... Judeau really was a fantastic and subtle side character, one of those characters who feels complex and fascinating despite the narrative never actively developing him in the same way did it did the main trio during the Golden Age. I think that in itself is an amazing achievement, to be able to draw so much from this personality without the show ever overtly forcing it, there's some brilliant nuance to that sort of characterization that, in its own subdued way, is just as incredible as the iconic characterization of Guts and Griffith. Thank you for this upload. Judeau is my favorite character behind Schierke. What is appealing is his pragmatism and absolute lack of self-deception; although he has regrets, he knows what he is and what his skills can accomplish. This extends tragically to Caska as you said, he realizes the fact that she will never choose him. An amazing part of his (partly Caska's) and Griffith's character where this split affection does in no way diminish his leal nature towards the White Hawk.

Judeau is the best character because he shows a little known human trait of humility. Judeau would be the first to tell you that even though the band of the Hawks have gone undefeated that it can't go on forever. Judeau is one of the few people who actually makes a conscience decision to be where he is and isn't disillusioned by Griffith's charisma. Here is a guy who is probably the most skilled in a small pond but then early in life you meet a guy like Griffith who basically surpasses you in all the ways you care about. He's faster, more graceful, better looking, a better speaker, more cunning, etc. What are you to do? He chose to follow and settle with being a witness to history. I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing but of course it lead to his horrible death. Keep in mind there is no upward mobility of social status in the world like it exists today. Judeau could have become an incredibly skilled craftsman or IMO a skilled hitman but then that is all he would ever be whereas with Griffith the sky was the limit so he chose that path. Judeau may have loved Casca and admired her as a fellow comrade but she was a woman out of his reach. Not because he wasn't good enough for her but because he knows there is no chance of a relationship with her with Griffith and then later Guts in the picture. Her heart was too fixated on them to have room for another and he knew that so he didn't bother. Had there been another capable woman in the Band of the Hawk similar to Casca who DIDN'T have this issue you better believe he would be hitting that up.

Really great perspective on the character. Luka and Judeau are both my favorite characters from the entirety of Berserk thus far, and I can really agree with your interpretation of why they are such effective support characters.

Thank you. And you're totally correct - both of the two you mentioned are vastly important for the story but hugely underrated.

I first watched berserk back when I was 7 roaming the cartoon section of blockbuster. I have never been or since then been affected from a fictional characters death as I was when Judeau died. I’m 23 now and I still tear up when I read or watch the golden age arc. Berserk is amazing.

Judeau was definitely my favorite of the "lesser" main characters. I can't say I love Guts, Griffith, or Caska more. I loved them all, and they are all too complex to choose from. I think that Guts and Caska romance was one of the best ever written. The tragedy even surpassing that of Shakespearean tragedy. I hate what Griffith did but I can't hate him for how he shaped the story and how well written and complex he is. Judeau is that guy I would just love to kick it with and chill though. He had that real bro mentality that I love in real people. Every time an Episode played and Judeau wasn't in it I felt it immediately and missed him so much .And then I got all sad inside knowing his fate and how his existence would play out. THAT is why this series is so amazing though. This sense of people you grew to love dying in an instant. Well that and so many other things. This drama is more emotionally complex than a woman during her period. And THAT says a lot. :3

You absolutely earned it. I appreciate the pace at which you upload new content too. Just when I don't expect it I see something new by you on the sidebar. I wonder what you think about the quantity-quality ratio, ie the more you upload the shorter and less edited each video needs to be (unless you do stuff like gameplay footage which requires minimal editing and can be uploaded by hour segments). I'm no content maker but I'm pretty sure that's something every KZbin creator has to think about.
@Aleczandxr8 жыл бұрын
Just Someone Well, I don't normally upload this regularly - I've just started a nice little break that'll last a couple of weeks, so I'm trying to take advantage of it. In terms of quality-quantity: to be honest, I don't spare it a thought. I just try to put as much quality as possible into my videos and upload them whenever I'm happy with them. Obviously an analysis on a secondary character like Judeau will take less time than some of my other ones, but it's all just a very natural process and upload frequency is all dependent on the amount of spare time I have. The next upload will be relatively small as well, but the one after probably longer.

Alongside Corkus, I find Judeau to be the most personally relatable character in the series. Above everything else, I think Judeau represents one thing: the difference between talent and skill. Judeau probably grew up having a fair amount of natural proclivities, but nothing so substantial that things came to him easily. As he describes himself as a jack-of-all-trades, I would guess that he tried to become a master at something, but either couldn't narrow down a focus or gave up when he saw people who were better than him with seemingly no effort. Griffith, on the other hand, strikes me as someone who didn't have to work to be as good at anything. It's been a long time since I've read the manga, but I'm almost certain that there is never any mention of him receiving formal training. Thus, I assume that he grew up a mercenary like Guts, and slowly formed his own following over the years. Guts stands in between the two as someone who is both innately gifted and shows a progression of learned ability. It's actually a subject of some speculation within the fan base as to whether Guts is secretly supernatural, but going off of the evidence we have, I think that he is simply someone who is born with good genetics that improve his bone and muscle density and high pain tolerance. When we first meet him, he's hardly what anyone would consider a tactical prodigy, even with his relative wealth of combat experience. As the series goes on and he grows up, he learns a lot from Griffith in terms of battle strategy and becomes a vastly more capable warrior. This all compounds on Judeau, further ostracizing him as someone standing in the shadow of others, whether that be because of his own (perhaps unjustified) resignations or because he simply lacked that certain "something" that some people are born with. Either way, Judeau is one of my favorite characters in the series if only for how much of myself I see in him.

Nice analysis, I enjoyed your comparison between Judeau and Guts, but I always thought that Judeau was like a B level Griffith. I sense that if Judeau was given a boost in a few characteristics like drive, confidence, or willingness to act, than he could've potentially been a an equal to Griffith. To me, Griffith is a chair and Judeau is a stool, they're very very similar, however, something is missing from the stool that prevents it from being a chair, if that makes sense.
@Aleczandxr8 жыл бұрын
I definitely see where you're coming from, though there is the fundamental difference between the two (in my opinion) in that Judeau really cares for others.
@femteezy19928 жыл бұрын
True, I kind of see Judaeu as the preevolution of Griffith. If one is to be a military leader, they would need to detach themselves from emotions & intimate relationships. Judeau lacks that which is why I'd say he's a B-level Griffith. Possibly, if Griffith treated Judeau as a protégé type, teaching him to be more driven and warning him about developing intimate relationships, Judeau could have possibly surpassed or become an equal figure to Griffith. However, Judeau would probably turn down Griffith's teachings as soon as he saw the level of commitment he took and how he would have to remain alone mentally. If he did take Griffith's advice though, I could see him reaching the top and then reflecting on what he has done and going through a mental breakdown similar to the one Griffith had in the river when he was talking to the younger Casca, except much, much more severe, and he probably would've never recovered for it. What do you think would've happened if Judeua had received the behilit instead of Griffith?
@Aleczandxr8 жыл бұрын
op wfree It's a bit difficult to say. Judeau in general is a good person but obviously when a goal or a dream that one desperately wants is in sight, it's natural for a primitive selfishness to take over. The only real darkness I sense coming from Judeau stems from his regret that he's not living for himself. But as for the sacrifice, I'm still not completely sure that he'd sacrifice those close to him if his characterization was unchanged. Perhaps if, like you say, he became Griffith's protege than he would've been more inclined to do it. But even then, I doubt that Griffith would have ever considered having Judeau as a protege. What ifs are interesting to think about but it's hard to tell in this case with so much ambiguity.
@stormcutter598 жыл бұрын
op wfree I dont think so. Judeau has slight confidence issues but the difference between him and Griffith is where he places his most important values. Judeau is a very intelligent and great guy, charismatic and willing to act quickly and decisively. The difference is that Griffith thinks his dream is worth sacrificing EVERYTHING for, and his own morality is plagued by his unwavering selfishness, which disregards any and all other persons around him. Judeau is content with life enough to enjoy the moment, and he makes the most out of the simplicities of his livilihood, going with the tide and enjoying the ride. Not only that but Judeau makes it his bussiness to be there for his closest friends, its his duty and he takes it seriously as you can tell. I see him as someone different than Griffith. If he can be anything to Judeau, its that he could have had an attitude similar to Judeau about his own ambitions. Thats about the extent of it. Judeau is nothing like Griffith i think, overall.
@femteezy19928 жыл бұрын
Joseph Franc Judeau definitely lived his life that way, but ultimately, he died disappointed in himself. One of the last words he said were," I'm afraid I'm all talk." I think that he didn't just mean that in the moment but throughout his entire life. I think that Judeau and Griffith are surprisingly similar with only a few characteristics making them seem like polar opposites. The characteristics are how they value their own empathy, ambition, and drive. The characteristics are debatable, but I think they are definitely close. Judeau is like a compassionate Griffith, he can't detach himself enough to let people suffer the Griffith does.

you're so brilliant and in telling the story of judeau I felt you were telling your own story, as if you were identified with this secondary character, I donnu why but it seems that you have a very humble nature and a selfishless approche to life and friendly interactions with people just like Judeau character but at the same time you want to be like that and you find comfort in being secondary despite the great potential your have. I know greedy youtubers far less talented than you that became very famous and rich due to their fame hunger and "dream" to "rule". You have to be more ambitious,, otherwise you'll die regretting your inacheived goals just like Judeau did, a pitiful tragic death.

Judeau WAS great, at psychology and healing. He could show people's strength like a mirror, comfort then just when they needed too... he was great, he was the glue holding the band together, he was their mother, that wigga was great and he will be missed... *fired shot in the air* at least his death was better than dying of an Hernia ... no I'm not crying ... got something in me eyes that's all :'(
