Organized by the Center for Gender Equity to welcome the second cohort of UGHE’s Mentorship Program, this is one of two webinars on ‘Compassionate Leadership’, hosted by the Center’s Chair, Tsion Yohannes and with opening remarks from UGHE’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Agnes Binagwaho.
In this first session, guest speaker, April Budd, discusses some characteristics of compassionate leadership and reminds us that ‘compassion is an innate instinct that can be cultivated further through practice’, and hones in on two important compassionate leadership tools: mindfulness and compassionate listening. She takes us through what each means in practice and how when applied, they can be transformative in personal lives and in mentoring relationships.
April looks at how to apply compassionate mentorship in order to be an effective mentor and mentee, and the different aspects it enhances in people’s lives. Along with a few examples from her own lived experiences, April shares practical ways to enhance connection in a virtual setting.
