So many legends are gone now, from the racers, crew members/chiefs,owners & the announcers. I'm glad I was fortunate enough to be around to watch all of these greats. ❤

I was 13yrs old & at this race in 74! Pop & I were sitting in the stands, bout 2/3's the way down track. If Snake thought he was upset bout losing 1st round, he shoulda seen this 13yr old Snake fan! LOL! I pouted for 2hrs after he lost & my Dad pretty much did the same when Big's rail couldn't stop & coasted thru 😠😠 LOL! Great time's though, growing up at the racetrack's of Southern California was absolutely AWESOME! Thanks for posting this & Thanks Pop, for everything 🙏 RIP BGS Sr

Thanks for the video CPTV. I had moved with my family in 72', from West Covina to Cambria (on the central California coast)...but came back to So Cal for this race. As always, it was spectacular. I especially liked the new category, Pro Comp....Veney & Armstrong were two of the best. ✌😎

Dale Emery, also notice Waterbed Fred was in the background, this is probably 5-6 years before they both worked for Beadle/Blue Max.

I am amazed at the crowd sizes back then. Sadly, recent size has really dropped

Pomona, Irwindale, OCIR were a regular Red Snapper smorgasbord in the 70's! I was 13 & at this race, but a year later I was in the pit area standing in line at the concession stand, standing in the line next to me was Jungle Pam! She noticed me staring at her, with drool on my chin no doubt, she smiled & winked, I damn near fainted!! 😂 Damn that was a lot of Women! 🤤

Wow. Dale Armstrong and Ken Veney. Dale would crew chief for Kenny Bernstein and lead him to 4 funny car world titles & 1 top fuel world title (I think he was still with Kenny in 1996 before Tim & Kim Richards took over the duties). And Veney would later be crew chief for Darrell Gwynn in 1989 and even stay for a bit when Darrell was forced to no longer drive and had Frank Hawley take over. To my knowledge I think Veney was still with the team when Mike Dunn took over the driving duties

The first race of the series points system. Before there would be just national events with the World Finals event crowning a “world champion” which was dumb to me. You could not win a single national during the season but win the World Finals event and boom you’re world champion. In the end Gary Beck (1 of 2), Shirl Greer, & Bob Glidden (1 of 10) would win the series titles in the 3 pro categories

It was absolutely DUMB! Kinda like Nascrap is now, I guess at least a driver/team has to earn their way to Phoenix, but then just whichever of the contender's finishes infront of the other 3 is crowned Champ & I think that is 💩

@@Slinger43 before they put in the point system it was said that Ed McCulloch was the kingpin of funny car before Prudhomme came. McCulloch in 1972 won 4 of the 6 races prior to the world finals (Don Schumacher won the other 2) yet Larry Fullerton won the World Finals and therefore was the world champion

@@bigjoeofthe707 Oh yeah, it was absolutely ridiculous how they did it then! Loved Ace, especially after he moved into my neck of the woods in Hemet CA 👍 My Father actually had 1 of the famous "A Ace always beats a King" T-shirts 💪😏

This show has the NHRA/California bias for the fuel cars. This is why I don't pay much attention to NHRA anymore.
