REMEMBERING JOHN ELROY SANFORD "REDD FOXX" (DECEMBER 9, 1922 - OCTOBER 11, 1991) [12/09/2021]

A lot of established stars where surprised at how well Redd Foxx's spontaneous acting style worked out on the show. Actor Jonathan Harris (Dr. Smith from Lost In Space) asked Redd if he wanted to rehearse with him. Redd told him he never rehearsed before the taping because he didn't want to lose his spontaneity. I think that's what made the show so funny. The show also had an excellent cast of characters. Bubba Bexley. Grady. Julio. Aunt Esther. (Believe it or not, the actress who played Aunt Esther was actually a pin up girl in the late 1920s.)

Having a lot of movies was very dangerous in those days because they had cellulose nitrate which is a highly flammable material that's difficult to put out once ignited.

Jackie Gleason also didn't rehearse. And I am so interested in reading some of the scripts of "the honeymooners" because Jackie followed maybe only 20% of the script. And read somewhere that some scripts are posted somewhere on the internet, but didn't find anything.

Redd Foxx was a comedian for 40 years before he was on TV. Including the Apollo on 125th Street. He knew about timing,stage presence , facial prop. He knew it all, didn't have to learn.
