It’s a different culture for sure, but I think the important lesson to takeaway (especially from the story about British guy) is that putting more effort into clear communication is needed, not the opposite. The girl found an immature guy, and then got horrible advice online. “Don’t ask” is not the norm in the west, in fact, there is no norm, it just depends on the maturity of the people. Not her fault. When you communicate your intentions from the start and talk openly as you go, that transcends most cultural boundaries, even in China.

I agree . I think the woman needs to ask the right questions to sift out what kind of stones are in a man's heart ; could be precious gems or plutonium .. Sometimes a man's mind might be corrupted by bad influences if so then she has to decide whether she can live with that or somehow help him to see what sort of person he really is . If the man is not “斯文” and does not show love in all things to her then she should hide herself from the danger and deceit . If the man has no intention of starting a fire for a purpose but just wants to burn wood then the woman should hide herself from the calamity and save both of themselves from the heart .

Here in the US, any male who made comments about "touching oneself" in a workplace setting or even with outside of work with co-workers could be charged with sexual harassment. HR would need to intervene and he would have to do harassment training to learn to respect women in the workplace. Even in casual situations, his comments could be deemed inappropriate and end up with a drink in his face. I think some Western guys in China are extra cavalier in their behavior because none of their family or regular friends are around so they can embarrass themselves all they want and most likely they'll eventually go back home so if you look like a creep to people, who cares, it won't matter.

You are right, they are not western girls, so westerners dont care if creep is a western man. Another reason is many of the western men are actually managers, teachers and employers and the girls they abuse are workers, usually migrants. Their family is very far away, also many girls from previous generation dont have brothers to protect them. You will never see a western guy behave like that to an ethnic minority community, example in Yili and Kashi because they know that girls there have many brothers, who dont care about government policy to be nice to disrespectful foreigners and will beat up badly the western guys if they behave the same way as in big cities. Foreign guys know who to target

Dude...what is with all these crazy ideas people have? Unless you work in porn nobody is touching themselves at work. Saying that's the norm is absurd. To actually believe that shows you have to be just completely ignorant of reality and base your ideas of life off pornos. I doubt anyone wants to be seen as a creep be it in China or America or wherever. Will people be more cavalier with places that are temporary... probably. I'd imagine it would be the same response for anyone visiting anywhere but I doubt the response would be to sexually harass someone and justify it on visiting or a nationality.

Regarding relationships, I think I'm conservative too, and I'm French. I think for most French people, you are officially in a relationship once you kiss, it means you're a couple. But even if we are in an exclusive relationship, we won't start thinking or talking about marriage before a while. Usually we are in a relationship for some time (months or years) before talking about living together, and then there are a few more years before considering marriage. Actually, when you start living together, it means you're testing your couple before getting to the next stage (marriage), so both people have the idea of spending their life together, but we might not tell it explicitly because we prefer to see if we can maintain our relationship while living together, before giving any hope of marriage to our partner. If things don't go well, we can still break up and not get married. We usually do it this way, instead of getting married first and then realize we're not suited to live together and need to divorce.
@pascallaflamme3688
@pascallaflamme3688 3 жыл бұрын
To follow up on what you said and what's mentioned in the video, but also as a french canadian man. We test the relationship before proposing. But the girl could have asked if they were in a relationship. I don't see why her foreigners friend told her not to. Unless she wanted to get married after 5 dates.. But asking if you are a couple, there's nothing wrong with it if it's not obvious for you. Be open with your thought and don't be afraid. If the guy get upset about it he's probably not serious about you. Just like Chinese people we don't want to waste our time. Obviously for us dating will also ultimately end in marriage if both party are compatible. But only after living together, and experimenting life together, can we know if we are perfect for each other. We take getting married as a very serious part of our life. Marriage is the decision that we will pass the rest of our lives with you. No one want to get a divorce. Talking openly about sex is also a way for us to know about you're preference. Keep in mind that westerners and European have a pressure of being good in bed. So we are open about it, as we want to make sure you have a satisfieing experience. But also we are not as conservative and we would definitely not force ourselves to be with someone if we were not compatible on that aspect at all. About cleaning the house why would someone get upset if they have nothing to hide. That sound fishy! But obviously it's not her job to do so and they could have done it together. Now if she did rearrange the whole house without asking, like moving object and reorganizing. I would also get upset. For the food complaint that really depends on everyone. It also depend on how open you are to trying new things. But westerners really care about food appearance. I totally disagree with westerners being dirty. Personally I take a shower in the morning and before going to bed or right after sport. But let's say I train at 17pm and I take a shower after. I won't take another shower later on. Cleaning to much is bad for your skin. Those that only take one probably have lived by themselves for to long. It depend on your routine but don't put everyone in the same bag. Also instead of slippers I prefer to walk barefeet or with your sock's on. Those are my personal opinion.

The showering in the morning thing is definitely true! I would feel kind of "stale" if I slept for a full 8 hours, jumped out of bed and then headed straight out of the door without washing. Although if I've done some kind of physically strenuous activity in the evening (going to the gym, cycling, being outside in hot humid weather, etc) then I will shower in the evening as well before bed, pretty much all the foreigners I know are the same. I don't know any foreigners that would hit the gym for a full 90 minutes and then just head straight to bed all sweaty and gross without showering.

We've got haggis from Scotland which is made of the liver, heart, and lungs of a sheep. Blood pudding is made from pig's blood, it's still quite common with breakfast. I've seen quite a few of the older generation still eat ox tongue or pig tongue too. Brawn is a traditional dish made from pig or sheep head processed into a kind of meat jelly, it was popular in the Victorian time. There'salso crubeens from Ireland which is boiled pig's feet. Tripe (stomach lining of farm animals) was pretty popular until a few decades ago too. Steak and kidney pie is still widely eaten and sold too, but as for the rest they are a bit more uncommon but you can probably find them in butchers or special stores. This cultivated uncertainty about the stages of "dating" is really more of an Anglo-Saxon thing than one with Westerners in general, let alone all foreigners. In France, for example, it's very straightforward: once a kiss has been exchanged, you're a couple and you get to do couple things like staying at each other's places, meeting each other's parents, etc. And unless stated otherwise you're expected to be exclusive. It may be over in a week (and for it to be over one of the parties has to say so explicitly), but for that duration of time you're in a full-fledged relationship.
@raevis9
@raevis9 3 жыл бұрын
I would say it is a scumbag thing... because yes, same here in Germany, usually a kiss seals the deal (though things are changing, so nowadays it often requires you to have to have a talk about it, lol, 'what are we?'). But of course there are some people who think they can just lie to others, claiming to have serious intentions, but once they got what they wanted they vanish... and that is easier to do if you are in a strange country, where no one even knows you and you don't ruin your reputation. I think this is really messed up.

Spicy food is found across many cultures, but it is primarily based on climate. Before refrigeration, cultures in hot areas used spices to cover the rotting meat smell/taste and became more accustomed to spices. The more tolerant you become to spiciness, the more "bland" non-spicy food becomes to your palate. People getting upset about someone liking or not liking a certain food is pretty ridiculous. The physical reality of whether a kind of food tastes good or bad to you isn't a moral failing or a virtue.

I'm not sure where this is coming from. Mostly it's just where these plants were indigenous that determined where they were most popular, with the exception of chili peppers, which were exported from the Americas to pretty much everywhere. People have certainly come up with a lot of theories as to why such things became popular, from medicinal affects to preventing or slowing spoilage, but most still concede folks likely just enjoyed the taste. As for covering the taste or smell of spoiled meat though, people actually had a much simpler solution to that: keeping live animals. Chicken, it turns out, does not spoil too quickly when the chicken is still alive.

On the not showering at night topic. I think this mainly comes from people who are used to living with air conditioning all the time. Many (all?) of the men talked about in this video are not just foreigners but “ex-pats” I.e. people who are living in China for a relatively short period of time and plan to leave at some point. Because of this they aren’t very interested in marriage and don’t care who knows this. As for showering in the morning, if you have a beard it is convenient to shave immediately after showering. A man looks unkempt if he only shaved the night before. This notion of accumulating bacteria working in an office sound germaphobic. Of course after exercise or if the day is hot, a shower in the evening is called for.

Mandarin Corner is the best- This one is interesting. Two Chinese girls talking candidly about sex in front of tens of thousands of people while saying "Chinese girls don't feel comfortable talking about sex" at the same time they sound just like most people I've met regardless of country or origin. Maybe realize that you're specifically talking about men that have left there home country to go to China. They would be a very select group (adventurous to say the least). And even then it is an impossibility that they are all the same. I love these videos and I'm always proud to be a subscriber and to have donated more than once (this one is great- a provocative discussion that makes people talk). I would invite anyone who watches this video to do the same. Thumbs UP. 谢谢老师!

I am French and my boyfriend is Chinese. Since we've started dating and moved in together, I change my shoes to slippers when I come home and even keep them on when taking a shower. I've always taken my shower in the evening so this hasn't been an issue. I wash our underwear and outwear (without shoes omg) altogether but we need to soak the underwear in disinfectant afterwards. I also put my suitcase on the bed but avoid the wheels touching it (we get inside the bed to sleep after all). I've always thought I was a clean person but it was nothing compared to him. I've changed my habits because I think there are more important things to fight about instead of "should I wear slippers in the shower or not"

Chinese people saying foreigners are dirty... So ironic. Most of the chinese people I know aren't really clean, they don't clean their home, they spit, and the way they eat is absolutely disgracious. I work in a chinese restaurant where half of my clients are Chinese, and even though I love them, I still apprehend cleaning their table after they leave. Most of the things you said are right, but that judgement about foreigners not being clean is just absolute nonsense.

I feel that a lot of these bad behaviors by foreign (western) guys are due to the fact that they are living in a country that is not their own and therefore have a more laid-back attitude regarding relationships. I'm a westerner (from Portugal) and I indentify much more with what you described as the chinese understanding of relationships. I'm sure chinese girls would have a much different experience if they were dating foreign guys in the west rather than dating them in China. Great video, keep up the good work Eileen!

It is important to note that casual dating (without assumed exclusivity [as boyfriend / girlfriend] and without the assumption that it will lead to marriage) is not something that all westerners would be comfortable with so please do not judge all western men based on this behaviour. IF you find yourself in a confusing relationship with a western man it is absolutely fine to ask can I call you my boyfriend? If he answers no we are just friends or FWB, you are fine to ask if he sees the relationship changing to boyfriend / girlfriend in the near future, if he says no and you want a serious relationship that will probably lead to marriage, end that relationship as he is just wasting your time.

Lets be honest if you meet a guy who still "'dates" after 30 years old, he is not looking for a wife but someone to fill his (greedy-sexual) needs. If you fall for a guy like that you're as immature as he is. Everything happens for a reason, learn from it. Communication is the key no matter the culture. There is no need to start a sexual intercourse to read through someone, i think that's the first mistake people often do is following lust instead of their brain, that's why they end up disappointed because their projections were not real. Stop wishing someone to be the person you wish them to be.

I just wanna add that the culture of 'western' dating is pretty similar to what we have in Singapore. Singapore is a melting pot of eastern and western culture. And the younger generation now treats dating as just hanging out with the person to judge and feel the compatibility. So I suppose even in an Asian country like Singapore, you can also experience the western style of dating. Just to share. Just to add on, we also throw the inner wear and other cloth into the washing machine. Haha.

Personally, I don't understand why so many Chinese girls long so much to date foreign guys. I have many female Chinese friends who ask me constantly if I know some handsome foreign guy to meet. They idea of foreigners (God knows why) is that all foreign men are rich, handsome and most importantly romantic! And I mean what is actually their expectation? Do they want to merry a foreigner? Or do they just want to try how it is dating foreigner? And about the personal hygiene. I really don't know anyone who don't take shower in the night after long day. But different cultures different habits. On the other hand, you Chinese guys are so crazy about being clean but don't mind throwing rubbish everywhere. Maybe not in the big cities, but smaller cities, towns and villages are different story. Even one of Eileen's videos was from her home village where she showed the ''mountain'' of rubbish thrown partly in the local stream...

I feel like this is a stereotype and you can't really group every foreigner the same that's borderline racism. It's just saying all Asians are the same. However I do believe these stories are true, I feel like most expats, people who are working abroad or is still travelling won't really want serious relationships. It's a time of excitement and adventure, why would you want to commit to any serious relationships? And I feel like the two foreign friends who gave the advice not to ask directly about relationship status isn't a cultural thing, that's just bad advice. I am Chinese Australian and never had that issue before when I was dating. I actually tell the guy what I want even prior to meet up so we don't waste each other's time. Never had a problem with being direct, in fact most guys I met prefer that. We respect each other's time and want to find someone who are on the same page. It is sad how the Chinese girl ended up wasting her time with that scumbag, but I seriously think healthier relationships are base on directness and honesty. If anyone fears of losing someone for asking a question then it's not the right relationship, that is a clear signal that it isn't right. From observation, people who says "See how things goes" even after weeks of dating then it just means they are not that into you. (that's from both genders and from various diff background and cultures)

I agree with David, this analysis is too general and different foreign cultures have different etiquette for dating and relationships. There is also the consideration of religion and an individual's value system that could contradict their own general cultural norms. I never agreed with the promiscuous attitude of many Brits, even though I am a Briton. I am a Christian and many Christians have the same attitude towards sexual relations - best within a formal marriage (opposite sex).

8:00 "both parties have usually the expectation that dating will lead to marriage" "otherwise they would not have even started". Honestly, I wish it would be like that in the west. But with the American-influenced culture it all went to hell. People are wasting their time by chasing holes, living in shallow relationships pretending to be happy, while they know that in a few years they'll throw each other out into the trash and move on. Like an animal that constantly moves from one place to the next because it can't devote its attention. Humans in the west are closer to animals. I'm sure you could underpin that with a few statistics on the rate of divorces in the west vs. the east but I can't bother. I have deep respect for eastern culture. It's honest, respectable, honorable. Things that have been lost in the west. I hope Asia doesn't change too fast, as I already see many influences from the west.

A lot of the characteristics mentioned in this video apply only to western European/North American males, and even then, a lot of western guys still prefer to date the traditional way. Many of these statements are based on stereotypes. If you travel to Latin America, which is more socially conservative than the 'West', many couples date with the intention of getting married one day. I am half Latino and have been dating a Chinese woman for five years. We match because our values and expectations are similar to one another. I wish Chinese people would not put all foreigners in a single description, because we are so different - but then again, other countries do the same to Chinese and Asian people in general.
