I think it is a bad idea to use a community deck for a language you are learning. You might as well just put the whole dictionary into a deck. Far better to build your deck yourself from the words you encounter for several reasons. Most importantly, if it is a word that we have already encountered then we are likely to see it again. So, we avoid obsolete or specialized vocabulary. The other reason is that just entering the word into our deck helps in remembering it. Finally, later if we look up a word that we don't know and find it already in our deck we will feel a greater sense of ownership since it is a word we have already tried to remember.
@andykalin65262 жыл бұрын
Yes, a community deck is a bad idea. You learn and retain by building the card, especially choosing a photo for that word! That's a huge part of the retention, personal meaning plays a major role in learning.

I'm still figuring out Anki, but that's also a problem with some language apps. Click practice and... Is that even still the same language? What is this word? Then I lie and say I learned it just so it'll let me finish.

A large part of the value of using these kinds of tools is in making your own cards, as the selection and thought that goes into that is also a useful tool in the learning process for languages but also just about anything. One of the reasons DuoLingo is poor for memory is that it does not give the user any choice, instead it forces them to repeatedly practise seemingly irrelevant phrases ("I use a razor a week" was one I remember, but because it was so stupid, not for good reason). Choice and thought involved is key here. Build sets from the ground up for better learning and retention (and it's way more fun, too).
@FrozenMermaid666 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, the learners are supposed to just learn the words and then create other phrases, so it doesn’t really matter if the phrases they show are funny and not something one would say, as long as one learns the actual words and their meaning and how to use them, and one can easily replace the nouns or the verbs etc and create different sentences based on those patterns, but I haven’t used any of those apps myself tho - I only saw others taking those tests in yt videos, and it kind of seemed like fun, but it is for beginners tho!
@FrozenMermaid666 Жыл бұрын
I am advanced level in Dutch after learning it for a few months, and am trying to find vocab videos that contain rare words and descriptive terms and advanced terms and other words like that, as I’m trying to reach a native speaker level in written Dutch as fast as possible - there should be simple / to the point vocab videos for every pretty language (there are over 38 languages on my list of languages I want to learn and improve) that only contain the word and the English translation and only pronounced once (and related words like other verb forms and plurals for nouns etc should also be included) and the nouns should be shown with the correct article and grammatical gender (m / f / n) which would make learning so much easier, and examples of sentences should also be included esp for certain verbs and prepositions / conjunctions etc, there don’t seem to be such videos for many of those languages, and even the ones made for Dutch, in the 2000 Dutch words video, the nouns were shown without the article, so I learned most articles later!
@FrozenMermaid666 Жыл бұрын
I haven’t used any apps, and only learning from yt videos and by googling certain words or using the English to Dutch / Dutch to English translator (esp to check the articles) and, also learning many other languages as well, but I’ve been prioritizing Dutch and Norwegian and Welsh (and sometimes Swedish) because I prioritize the prettiest languages first - however, I haven’t felt like learning anything this week, and I can’t even focus, so I haven’t learned many words this week, but I learned over 8.000 base words in Dutch and over 3.500 base words in Norwegian and also in Swedish and about 500 words in Welsh since I started learning languages on my own a few months ago!

I hate Anki so much, but it's probably one of the best learning devices. And I'm here uploading decks again. I was so confused when you rated Anki below Duolingo on the tier video. And also didn't think Duo belonged in the S-tier slot. Anki and LingQ are probably 2 of the best for learning, but are F-tier in their user-friendliness and UI. I remember getting so frustrated with some MIA add-ons. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration to fire Anki back up. xo

How come when I import a shared deck that says it has 5000 words I will only get 20 or so. That's happened for every deck I try to download both on desktop and mobile. The decks are always way way smaller than what it was said to have. Any idea what is going on here? Am I missing something? Thanks for your video.

Theres a cap on new cards per day. You can change this in the settings. The imported cards are still there, it will just increase visible ones at a slow pace so you can better learn and memorize.

Hey Cole, I've used Anki for years, but just recently started using Awesome TTS, now that I want to learn French. When I apply Awesome TTS to the back side cards of my French deck, it automatically applies the French pronunication to both my German and Spanish decks. Now my German and Spanish cards are pronounced in a ridiculous French accent. How do I apply Awesome TTS to just one deck, so it does not automatically apply to all three decks? Thank you!

Hi. How did you set it up to have only 3 buttoms in answer instead of 4 (again, dood, easy)? How do I do that on ankidroid?
@hcm99992 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem is why use flashcards in the first place. I have never used flashcards. I don't understand them. I don't know why anyone would want to use them. First, it takes a long time to write them. Second, it may take a long time to read them and get the answers correctly. Third, they look boring, tiring, tedious and time-consuming. Why not just read a book? In the same time you create and read flashcards you could just read a book. Or, if you are studying something like Physics of Mathematics, you should just solve a bunch of exercises from a textbook. Most textbooks have plenty of exercises for you to practice. All you have to do is solve them. The book author already prepared all the exercises for you, you don't need to write them, unlike flashcards. If you are learning a foreign language you should read as much as possible. Reading is the best way to acquire vocabulary. You consult the dictionary for the words necessary to understand the text. Reading is much more fun, entertaining and engaging than using flashcards. By reading you always see the word in context. Flashcards on the other hand take the words out of context. It is much harder to memorize and understand them. Flashcards are completely inefficient compared to just reading.
@terrestrialcreature7481 Жыл бұрын
Anki is just another tool to add to your arsenal. Obviously reading books and listening to native speakers are also necessary. It may seem time-consuming at first, but since the time between reviews increases each time, it becomes easier and easier. Eventually you might only need to check 1 card once every year or longer, and still be able to recall the term. The adding of terms can be more tiresome though, but its a price worth paying for a super efficient way to remember things in the future. If youd prefer you can always just rely on community made decks instead.
