Was expecting a much larger sump room especially for a 3000 gallon tank! Would love to see some corals even though he previously mentioned that the parameters and outside environment make it difficult to maintain corals. Just imagine seeing an easy to keep coral like soft corals grow to their natural mature sizes like a gigantic toadstool coral!
@TheWildWillauers3 жыл бұрын
I agree, I was planning to do a much larger sump/filtration room, but ended up downsizing because we had some other ambitious plans for where the refugium is now... but ended up not following through so we ended up with what you see. One of my biggest regrets with the project. Soft corals are definitely something I plan to experiment with in this setup, hopefully sooner than later, just need to have the time to really dedicate for that and make sure the parameters dont swing as much as they do seasonally. That was part of the plan the whole time to have massive colonies of soft corals, but we all know how plans go lol I am very curious how they would fare with our northern sunlight.

@TheWildWillauers3 жыл бұрын
Haha thank you sir! That would be awesome to have an above ground pond with koi, I’ve seen a few setups like that online and they look so cool. That was actually my original plan was to have a massive algae turf scrubber to take advantage of the natural solar energy. I’ve read great things about them, but with some other things going on I had to kind of take some shortcuts on the build to get it done faster. Thus we have the refugium rather than the turf scrubber. Eventually I will build it to how I imagined it to be, just need to find the time for it. For your setup I would go with the turf scrubber, although I’ve never had one based in what Ive read and what little results i get from my refugium, I’d say the turf scrubber would be far more efficient

Thinking of doing something similar, any advice for heating? Would love a walk through of things you like about your build, things you would do differently and lessons learned
@TheWildWillauers3 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly heating has not been an issue at all, even in the subzero temps we get here! The ambient room has no air heater and still never drops below 60 degrees even on the coldest nights. The tank its self is only heated with one 1000watt heater that rarely even turns on, I have it set for 75, but so far this winter the tank has not dipped below 76. The biggest challenge is actually keeping it cool in the summers, the natural lighting is like a furnace! So that would be my number one thing to do differently, either with a chiller (too expensive) or with underground plumbing for passive cooling. Also would like to have a more functional/aesthetic way to shade the tank on hot summer days. I would also have far more overflow bulkheads (currently hav 3-2”) to allow for a greater flow rate into the sump. I think more bulkheads in general would be beneficial just to allow for changes in filtration setups etc. Also being that the tank is level with the ground, it makes vacuuming the sand pretty much impossible. Also more floor drains and waterproofing would be beneficial to make clean up easier. Keep us updated on your future builds! Always love to see other’s projects to get inspired!

Awesome! But mixing sun light and powered lights is that not causing algae problems? And is the aquarium facing outside protected by another glass?

@Emg24633 жыл бұрын
very cool...but how do you keep the temp up in the winter ? Does the thickness of the acrylic help to insulate ?
@TheWildWillauers3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The temperature is actually very stable during the winter, only have one heater in the sump and very rarely will it turn on. The tank usually hovers around 77F even during the coldest nights. There is no room heater, but the volume of water and the greenhouse effect keeps the room temperature always above 60F at night. The acrylic at this thickness probably has a decent insulation factor. I will put a foam insulation sheet over the outside window on the coldest days which helps too

@ferddyenriquez30373 жыл бұрын
It's Amazing! Soooo beautiful!
@TheWildWillauers3 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate that! Surprisingly the temperature control is the easiest in the winter. Very rarely does the water heater kick on, which is set to go on at 76F. There is no air heater, and yet the room never dips below 60 even on the coldest nights. The large volume of water, the solar heat and the heat produced by the pumps help a lot in the winter. The summer is actually the biggest challenge, there are two greenhouse circulatory fans on opposite sides of the building that help ventilate the room. By mid-summer I often have to use a tarp to shade across the roof during the sunniest/hottest. I’ve got a couple things in my head to make this process easier/cleaner than just tossing a tarp on top. I’ve also had to use mini A/C units during the hottest days to combat the heat. Without all of that, the water has gotten to 86F for nearly a day during the first summer, but I make sure that it never can happen again.

First oh my gosh that's gorgeous! Second, how hard is it to keep the water warm with the window to the outside, and how hard to keep algae growth down with all the natural light?
@TheWildWillauers3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Monica! It’s surprisingly very efficient in the winter, the system only has 1 1000watt heater in the sump that hardly ever turns on, maybe a few times in the coldest nights of winter, and it’s set to go on at 76F. The large water volume, the pumps and UV sterilizer definitely help keep it stable. The R value of the acrylic must be pretty high as well because I can leave the outside panel exposed for days and the temperature hardly fluctuates. The ambient air temperature inside hovers around 65F during the winter without any air heaters again thanks to the large water volume and greenhouse effect. All the herbivorous fish help combat the algae so it’s really not too bad, at least on the rocks. If I don’t swipe the acrylic at least a few times a week then it can be a pain and have to get in the tank to manually scrape because the magnets just don’t have enough force to get everything. Which is most of the time because I am so strapped for time.
@drivemyexotic52743 жыл бұрын
Very cool. I saw this on R2R. What is the next build? Adding to this system or altogether new?
@TheWildWillauers3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It’s going to eventually be both; adding and refining this system and a new one altogether in a year-ish. This system was supposed to be the final project, but life threw some curveballs and had to wrap this system up in a hurry so that’s why the filtration etc seems so rushed and an afterthought. I’ll be home a lot more soon and will finally be able to properly finish it. And then who knows what several years from now, this system will probably be converted to a unique freshwater system. The next build, if there are no more curveballs, will be a proper reef.

Cool build. I would question the life span of the pond liner though. Fiberglass and epoxy resin would have been a better choice to water proof the inside of the tank.
@TheWildWillauers3 жыл бұрын
Yep, that was one of concerns when I was planning. The liner is EPDM and supposedly has a lifespan of 90+ years so Im not too concerned. Fiberglass and epoxy would make for a cleaner setup, but having never worked with it and having worked with EPDM for similar large builds I was more comfortable going with what I know on such a large build. I’ve read that sometimes the epoxy needs to be resurfaced or repainted sometimes so that was my major concern with that. But I plan to play around with it on some smaller projects and see how I like it
