Complete concept of moment of force or Turning effect of force class 8th ICSE physics
Turning effect of force
A force may cause an object to turn about a pivot. The turning effect of a force is called the moment of the force.
1. When you apply force on the handle of a door, the door turns around the hinges.
2. When you applies force using foot on the pedal of a bicycle, the pedal turns about the pedal axis.
3. When a key is put into a lock and force is applied on it, the key moves.
Factors affecting turning effect of force:
Greater the magnitude of force applied, greater will be turning of an object.
2. Perpendicular distance of the force from the point of pivot.
On combining the two factors , turning moment of force is given by:
Torque = force ( F ) X perpendicular distance ( d )
Clockwise moments
Anti-Clockwise moment
Units of Moment of force
Moment of force = Force x perpendicular distance
SI Unit of Moment of force =
SI Unit of Force x SI Unit of distance
SI Unit of Moment of force = N x m
Relationship between S.I and C.G.S unit of Force
1 N m = 107 dyne cm
Some examples and application of moment of force.
1.A handle is fixed on a door at the maximum possible distance from the hinges.
2. We prefer to use a spanner with long arm.
3. A mechanic use a screwdriver of long and thick arm.
4. The hand operated flour grinder used in village homes is provided with a handle near its rim.
