First of all, Good Luck! Understand the nervousness, but take your time, hike your own hike. You will start learning your groove by the time you get to Neels Gap. What a wonderful journey to share with your bride.

Pro tip: buy your second pair of shoes and break them in before you leave for the trail. Have them sent to you when you need them. Buy them 1/2 size larger than you wear now. Breaking in new shoes on trail can be agony and crippling. Have a pair of waterproof socks for the soggy days. They make a huge difference. I was an Army LT, 50 years ago and the saying "take care of your feet and they'll take care of you" is very true. Just wear autodarkening glasses and forget the shades. Thru hiking is a struggle to begin with. The fancy video shots just make it harder. If both of you have cameras, that should be enough. This is going to be a difficult great adventure. You have to make it as easy on yourselves as possible. When my son and I did hikes, we divided the comon gear(3 man tent, cook set, and tools). When he was little, I carried most and as he got bigger he carried more. Now, he would have to carry most. Add pair of tough vinyl gloves. They are light and can waterproof your hands when cleaning things in the cold or when you mittens get wet. I think that I said it before, carry a survival kit incase you get stuck in a storm. Include several of packets of instant oatmeal, cocoa, candles, matches, an SOL Heetsheet emergency blanket. The fuel saver is great. I use one for filling canisters when doing trail magic. The real big canisters only cost $2 more than the small ones and can refill 4 small canisters. Becarefull about overfilling. A very important tool in with your first aid kit is nail clippers. They can prevent a lot of trouble. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

Is the Paka hoody worth it? It keeps popping up and I’m skeptical. Is it warm, durable? Best of luck on your journey.
@Lt.Hikes03292 күн бұрын
Yes, I think it is. It’s thicker than the synthetic sun hoodies I own, which makes me believe it would be too warm for temps above 60. I have worn it during training hikes, 2 to 3 times per week, and purposefully not washed it for a couple weeks (No sweaty smell at all). My only concern is you are not supposed to put it in dryer. While on trail I am thinking this might be an issue. My plan is to wash it on gentle and then roll it up in a towel. I will let people know how its working for me.
