Complete Guide on How to Visit Dry Tortugas National Park | Florida

One of the most unique and breathtaking national parks we’ve been to is Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida. It is also the most expensive park to visit due to its remote location. Dry Tortugas is located 70 miles west of Key West, in the middle of the ocean. The park consists of 7 small islands within 100 square miles, with Garden Key Island being the main one to visit. This means the only way to get to Dry Tortugas National Park is to either take a boat (chartered or private), the public ferry, or a seaplane. Therefore, it takes a lot of prior planning and money to visit this gorgeous park. However, it is worth it! Dry Tortugas is home to the historic and photogenic Fort Jefferson, clear teal water, an abundance of coral reefs and marine life, and sea birds. It’s seriously on our top 10 to visit in Florida.

Back in the 70’s when I was stopping here, the seaplane service was $35 from Key West. My how times have changed.

My first visit here was when it was a national monument, back in the mid 70’s. I made a number of stops here during supply runs to both the fort and the nearby lighthouse as a member of the US Coast Guard. What a place!

@@LiveThatAdventure We took a 55 ANB out there to make sure the mariners could see the lighthouse. The NPS has caretaker positions that are totally hard to get!

Hi there! Random question, but was there a big issue with sea sickness on the ferry? I have emetophobia and I'm going on this trip next month. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Hey Becca! My sister gets sea sick really easily and she was fine on this trip. That being said, she took medicine and I believe she had some sort of bracelet on as well. One thing that I have great helps is to keep your eyes on the horizon. Hopefully it helps. Ones things for sure, your gonna love it when you get there!
