The level 2 grid fleece from this system is one of the most versatile pieces of clothing I have ever owned. I absolutely love it.

Great review! Having lived the system for years to include in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan I can say the military actually got something right here! As you started to go into around the 24:00 minute mark it is a "system" and is meant to be configured for your needs at the moment. It's flexibility is its greatest strength, 55 degrees, light rain and you're humping it, it can configure for that. 30 degrees and you are standing around, it can configure for that. Just so it is clear you don't have to put on layer 1 then 2 then 3 then 4. I loved the near pajamas like feel of the level 4 windbreaker which you might have noticed when you unzip the side pockets they act as a vent in case it warms up while you are wearing it. The waffle pros are MUCH better than the old poly-pros and anyone who says different is just suffering from nostalgia or hasn't used the new stuff. I love my waffle top almost as much as my woobie...almost. Also last thing, most of this stuff (if you wear the proper type under shirt) is made not to melt to your skin in the event of fire and heat from things like a roadside bomb. Not something hopefully you will ever encounter but realize this isn't just some rebranded Columbia gear.

For nostalgia and still unbeatable is the old m65 field jacket liner. I wore that under my gortex. Also is the old brown sweater worn under bdu/ocp top

Its a great system! I have the silk weights and the grid heavy weight. They are very warm. Recently i went to the older heavy weight poly pro's. Quarter zip just like the level 2 grids. I find them more comfortable to wear compared to the grid. Not as static as the grid either. Easy to slip on and off. Great layer for upstate NY winters. I like the heavy polys even over the level 3 fleece. The only fleece i like is tactical taylors version. I also like the level 4 wind jacket and of course the level 6 gortex although its not have as durable as the older gen 1 and gen 2 gortex. They were trying to save weight and offer more breathability with the gen 3 gortex. Something to keep in mind. But i love mix n' matching the different levels for just the right situations and temperature's. Can dial it in nicely that way. Stay safe! Hike on!

Great review. Living in the Colorado Rockies I see this as a great system. There is a place for all parts of the system sometimes in the same day.

I use the last two levels and the the first layer long johns with my sleep system. If the temps are not too low, I sleep out of the sleeping bag, and if it drops too low, crawl in the bags. I love them for that purpose. I wear wool socks and the booties as well. It works well for me sleeping in a hammock.

I just picked up the PCU system. The SF Grey set that's basically the same thing. Such a great system. Still had LVL 1,2, and 3 from my army days so that saved me some money to.

The ninja suit and waffle long johns are the bomb. Still wear mine. I used to wear the ninja suit top on the mandatory 12 milers they had at Campbell during the winter. Sadly I only have one pair of the waffles though. Those things are the best long johns ever. Going to buy a new set whenever I go to an army base again. Ive got friends that are still in. LoL. Clothing and sales always had them in stock. I've got like 4 pairs of the ninja suit. 2 in black 2 in tan. Also have the under armour ones when I worked overseas as a pvt security contractor still in the factory wrapper. I preferred my tried and tested army gear. The company I worked for issued us some pretty good shit except for those desert boots we got. Very uncomfortable so I got a pair of Merrells.

Good review sir. I live in Houston and use the silk weights and Gortex year round. Deployed to Iraq in '05 and had the fleece jacket and pants. So, it is out there...just gotta find it. It was in black with no velcro (very nice). Thanks for the review. It helped me out a bunch!

Level 3 is great - even though it may not be a wind blocker, still keeps me warm in light wind. Definitely be prepared to pay more if you get any color other than the standard Army ones.

I have used this in the army and it works pretty good, I like the gen 1 goretex parka top better than the gen 3, it's much warmer but bulkier. The gen 3 compared to the gen 1 in my opinion sucks as far as the goretex top goes, the rest I didn't mind using gen 3 stuff for. I found that using each layer in sequence with each other made things way too warm, and this was in -10 degree weather, I only used the fleece top with the gotrex top (the level 6 ) since you could open up the armpits for ventilation if you start to get hot. With everything on even in the field for weeks at a time we wouldn't wear everything or we would start sweating like pigs. I have put these to good use in very cold conditions and been pretty comfortable. I personally wouldn't buy all 7 layers unless i was going to alaska or ft drum or somewhere like that. We only used the goretex pants when it was freezing rain and we were going to be out for a long time. Good system all together but I only 2 layers (sometimes 3 with the poly pros base layer or the waffle top added on top of that) were ever worn by my personally. I still had the rest of it just never had the need for it.

Maine...the preppers nightmare. 90s with high humidity in the summer and can hit -30 in winter. Really hate having to prep for extreme cold since it's so bulky. but it's needed.

Moon suit is not popular because it is not a combat part. It is a sit still and stay warm part. Moving around in this thing will start some serious overheating issues. But standing around and taking the freezing weather on the nose it works very well. Most I have ever really needed was the fleece and gortex tops and bottoms.

Those primaloft puff jacket and pants should keep you warm anywhere in the world. They will dry while you wear them, if you get wet, they breath. Most of your gear fits this important survival function. That gear will work from Texas to Alaska.

What you're calling chest pockets one the L4 and L5 jackets and the pass through pockets are actually venetaltion for heat when your on the move. They aren't meant to hold anything in particular.

Here is the old school system I used in 90-93 as a tanker 1.)wool blend longjohns 2.)BDU Pant, BDU Top 3.)M-65 Field Jacket 4.)US Army Mechanics Coveralls, Winter 5.)Fistail Parka with fur hood 6.)Regular PVC green wet weather gear, jacket and pants aka rain gear on your head wool watch cap and fur hood on your hands aftermarket goretex gloves on your feet aftermarket goretex boots, Danner or Materhorns, wet weather boots add ons scarf, usgi mittens, black mickey mouse boots if real cold Served me well for years but a lot of it is not fast drying like the new polertec gear and not very breathable like all the new gore tex gear. This is great gear if on a budget. Most of it is very well made if authentic USGI and a lot cheaper. I not mostly use a a layering system based on commercial gear in subdued colors like black and grey.

Very,very good review! Others who review gear would do well to take notes from you. I came here because when I was in SOF, we were issued the "Alpha Green" PCU system and I wanted to see,AND to see the actual components before I went dropping coin for a complete MC set. On a side note,there are actually TWO different Level 7 Alpha green jackets...the one you have, and one that is cut to fit OVER your gear,to include a pack,known as the version 1 and version 2 respectively.Also, they are making a MC level 7 jacket/pants now (Puff Suit) That I have seen floating around off-post surplus shops, made by the same makers of the level 7 Alpha Green components,"Wild Things Tactical". Just some side notes on a overall excellent review. D.O.L

That's the Generation III, right? How does it compare to the previous generations? Especially curious about the ruggedness of the LVL 6...
@lwysparagon8109
@lwysparagon8109 2 жыл бұрын
It uses lighter Goretex fabric than Gen I and II and sheds unnecessary weight off too. My Gen III already got a slit by sharpness of plastic box cover and the Gen I has also a slit from long storage fold. I would say all should be equal in term of ruggedness but in overall aspects I prefer Gen II most.

no name Hello there, I know your comment is old but I wanted to ask what kind of fleece is the level 3 bottoms made from? Is it a Berber/ Sherpa fleece material like the level 3 jacket is or is it more like the older style polartec fleece where it's a smoother surface, if u know what I mean? Anyways, I hope u see this because I would love to hear more about them and where u have seen them for sale. Thanks
