Complete Mushroom Grow Guide: Grain Spawn

This video is for bulk spawn grows (rye and substrate), not cakes

-Bulk Substrate
-Will need approximately 2lbs substrate per 1lb spawn grain
-Casing Layer (optional)
Syringe with spore and water solution
-Different spores from most types of mushrooms can be found from online vendors.
Small room with minimal air flow
Sterile gloves
Plastic container
Polyfill
Damprid
-Holding Chamber (optional): see 0:33
-Be very careful if using a heating element. Not necessary if room temperature is above 60ºF.
Food dehydrator is much easier than the method used in this video.

A couple points I didn't mention in the video: 1)The holding chamber, rather a *heat mat* , is quite risky. Both as a fire hazard and of overheating the grain. Only use this if your room temperature is going to fall bellow 60°F. Even then be careful. 2) 9:59 There are three mushrooms in the middle. Look at the cap of the one on the left. That partially torn white film attached to the cap and stem is called the veil. Most species of mushrooms produce spores which are released when the veil breaks (messy, don't want unless you are making your own spore syringes). The perfect time to harvest right before it does. So that mushroom is great indicator of when to harvest. I let this strain go longer because they rarely produce or drop spores. 3) Once the grain is 100% colonized, 6:27, leave it in the holding chamber for another couple days to fully colonize the grain. This helps prevent stalling from going to fruiting conditions too early. Patience is key. 4) Want to make sure this is clear, leave the lid on the tub during the fruiting stage too. I just had it off for the video. Only remove the lid to mist/fan. 5) A flush is basically each harvest. The pins come in and turn into fruits then you harvest. Then the next pinset and fruits grow (second flush). You should get at least 3 flushes using this method if all goes well. If you have some "overachievers" that grow faster than the rest of the flush, you can carefully cut them at the base rather than the twist and pull method (so you don't damage the surrounding cluster). Be sure to uproot the remaining stem when you harvest the rest of the flush so it doesn't rot. 6) I used a bathroom out of necessity rather than choice. Any small room would work, a walk in closet would be great. Sanitize all surfaces of the room to the best of your ability (counters, furniture, walls, floor). During inoculation I wear a face make and gloves, and often poured alcohol on the gloves to keep my hands sterile. Really the purpose here is to do all you can to avoid contaminates. Older buildings or ones with high concentrations of mold will make it more difficult to avoid contaminations. One of the most common is trich with green coloring. If contaminations occur (really any color besides the white mycelium) dispose of the grain without opening the bag/jar. Some contaminates could be harmful if inhaled. 7)This video is not meant to be fully comprehensive!! There is always more to learn, keep researching. @@skatetwopurt Yeah man do the bubble wrap method. Put a layer of bubble wrap (prefered) or crumpled wax paper on top of the substrate. This creates a CO2 layer that should kick start the stalled mycelium. Leave it on for 3-5 days. Good luck

Pro tip: inject the bag upside down, let it drip all the to the bottom and then turn it the right way up. Helps spread the spores throughout without any pooling at the bottom and speeds things up

Most silica gel packets you find with food have a similar chemical composition. I could be wrong, food dehydrators are probably the better way to go.

Best method for shaking and dispersing the spores inside the syringe is to use a vibrating massaging wand. Put it on a good setting and hold it against it and it mixes it up good and fast.

do not use aluminium as a tub, unless you line it with plastic. mycelium will eat through it, and the fruits will be unfit for human consumption

I've seen this theory before. I've seen it said that it can eat out the bottom of the tub and/or get aluminum inside the fruits. Both may well be true. However, I will say that once I cleaned the aluminum tubs, there was no sign of decay or reduction in the aluminum. I'm not sure that the theory is true.

LegoMyEgo mushrooms do produce organic acids to break stuff down. Acids make aluminum ionize I believe (took two years of hs chemistry not an expert). This will make the mushrooms uptake aluminum. You’re not gonna get aluminum poisoning from one or two mushrooms a week tho. That’s why you SHOULD grow your own! Because they are so capable of picking up environmental toxins (much worse than plants are)

Also agree with not using aluminum as we already come in contact with aluminum everyday especially in the anti-perspirants and deodorants we use. I have been using silica to detox aluminum by drinking FIJI water naturally to have a high silica content.

Have you noticed that they are making deodorants aluminum free. A few years ago there were only a couple aluminum-free deodorants and now since several studies have been released about the dangers of aluminum building up in the body the industry has taken note and now offer several aluminum-free options. Caroline Wells some plants can have exponentially more silica. I believe any type of grass shoot does. It’s why switchgrass biomass makes so much ash. Bamboo shoots might be the best source out there.

I may have to try it myself. I gave my best friend $500 for the mushroom seeds, miracle grow, and soil. He was pretty secretive with the setup and I never got to see it but I wonder if he did something wrong after looking at this. It seems very different than what he described. I did get one mushroom but I guess it didn't grow enough. It was like those white ones you get at the grocery store. I never realized until my and my friend got to talking that those white ones are the same thing but they are to young to get you high. The one he gave me was pretty tasty but I didn't even get a buzz. Sometimes I think we're just unlucky. Last year we went in half on a half pound of pot, I kicked in my $2000 and on his way to bring me my share, the police were pulling him over so he had to toss it.

By mass the organism is mostly mycelium. When they are ready they create mushrooms for the sole purpose of spreading spores. These come in waves called flushes.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Not trying to criticize but here are a couple things I do differently. I don't mist until after a few flushes, your casing should have enough moisture in it to facilitate multiple flushes. That could be why you're getting so many aborts (black-non maturing pins) I don't block my air holes, plugging your air holes with cotton is essentially just blocking your air flow.

@@thegreatecb Well for me, I harvest all the fruits and aborts as best I can. Then I heavily mist (about 60 sprays) and then continue as usual. They'll grow back. There is usually one-two weeks between flushes. I got four flushes out of all of my tubs. The second and third flushes are the best.

Mushrooms dried this way are capable of being reanimated. Just add water and a food source to an interior section and it will grow. Spores will germinate years after drying. My first attempt at growing mushrooms was button mushrooms. I got the seed in the form of dried colonized grain. The instructions explained how to make spawn culture and I successfuly grew a jar of spawn. You next lifted a section of sod and spead the spawn in the square, put the sod back down, and watered. I didn't get any mushrooms though.

Well I'm definitely New to the "bulk" method and JUST started some grain colonization about 3 weeks ago and of COURSE I just went FULL RETARD so NOW I have a 54qt tub with over 20lbs inoculated grain ALMOST done and a 5×5 hydroponic tent with a 4 liter reptile fogger hooked to a humidity controller with 3 adjustable storage shelves full of fruiting trays I'm still waiting on my 6 inch duct fans for fresh air intake and co2 dispersion and i THINK my house heaters will keep the temps good enough but a simple little led light or two would be plenty maybe even a florescent tube or two LOL and in a couple weeks I'll be MORE than happy I'm sure

I'm confused... With a sealed bag complete with a self healing injection port and a sterilized needle, why is it necessary to hose down the whole room??? I just don't see how contaminants could get into the bag?

the kitty liter that they sell at walmart that is made of clear and blue crystals(not they clay mix) the crystals is desiccant that is in the little paper packets when you buy electronics. it is called sodium silicate or water glass.

I do a lot of things like this and am very good at it , this. Was by no means easy. Or intuitive , other sites explain why things are done , and for me that was very much the difference between success and failure , The,temp and stearleness is very important for the fruiting stage , a blew a batch due to green mold and lack of info

Inoculation to grain with spore syringes can be hit and miss. Try liquid culture syringes instead (also you don’t need to wipe off the lighter soot from the needle, it’s completely sterile and won’t hurt anything)

Sterile technique is on point. This is how you do it. Except one thing......NEVER inject a spore syringe straight to grain like that. Always throw a couple drops to an agar plate, let it colonize the agar first. Use that to inoculate the grain. If you follow this guys sterile technique, cutting open the bag and throwing agar in shouldn’t be too risky. Seal it with rubber band tightly, or impulse sealer is better. Hair straightener actually works well too.

1.- You could use calcium oxide (I think in america call it lime, but I'm not sure) if you use 5 % of the total weight of your substrate, it can enhance the mycelial grown, 2.- The mushrooms look a little weird, CO2 works fine with mycelium, but oxigen works fine when the pins wants to grow into a mushrooms, maybe a little more ventilation could work for your mushrooms That's some advices that I think it could help you to improve your method, I hope you could understand me, I'm not an english speaker

Just curious as to why you would need to flame "sterilize" and already autoclaved, medical grade sterile needle, and then wipe it with an alcohol wipe after you've flamed it. That would just contaminate your needle.

When your syringe has a large cluster it's a pain in the ass to shake and get it broken. Take the alcohol while that comes with the needle hold it over the cap and loosen then pull just a little air into the syringe close back tightly and shake and the cluster will bust up very easily remember not to remove the alcohol whipe when pulling the air in to the syringe and just a little air is needed

I dont have more substrate for a casing layer so would I wait for mycelium to take over the substrate and go straight to fruiting? If so how would you recomend doing so? Thanks again for the video.

Been watching the steps for quite a while now, I had an older bag of Rye grain spawn was sitting on it for too long found out the sterilized grain spawn bags do have a shelf life, had Mycelium growth but also green penicillin mold too. Two fresh bags of spawn were inoculated on the 15tg of this month, its now the 22nd maybe stalled? Not sure I mixed the spawn bags up yesterday once more and the closet space is at 79°f , two bags are going but don't think growth yet?

Helpful ,but wish I knew I could put Rubing alcohol in a spray bottle and how important it is to spray the poly fill and use substrate that comes in a sealed sterile bag . “Boomer bag” only summer time , or to hard to get clean heat
