Am about to tackle this myself and my only worry is the old screw holes in the deck not holding well once I take the rails and everything off and go to put it back on. Any tricks for this? Bigger screw or some sort of filler for the holes? Can't imagine doing the toothpick and wood glue trick on the 100+ screws!

We usually replace all hardware with new stainless steel hardware to ensure it will all last another 20 years as this is part of our "Best Practices" policy.

You're not going to get the new screws into the old holes. That will drive you crazy. Instead, you'll be drilling new holes (or using self-tapping screws) to install the new items onto your boat. Just look at where the old screws were located and put your new screws into the same general locations. The screws (number, location, etc) in the wood decking are important. That decking helps secure the alignment of the pontoons.

curious about the skin part. could you clean, sand and paint the old skin instead of replacing it?

Can you recommend what tig rod to use on a pontoon? Thanks

Welding rods are specific to the type of aluminum, there are several types of aluminum used for toons depending on each manufacturer. It would be best to contact your pontoon manufacturer for more details.

Avoid "flipped" old houses, boats, cars, or whatever. Most doing this work just slap cosmetics over the old (hiding it to get your money), leaving you to deal with the failure of that in the future. A good example is this company's choice to not replace the wood flooring. That wood was already decades old, so how much more life can it possibly have in it? And, when that wood does fail, you've got an expensive repair job. Replacing it during the "restoration" would have been far cheaper than having to rip everything back off and start all over at some future date.

Robin you sound like you have a lot of experience. We agree that in most all cases that a replacement of the wood deck is the right course. We do not flip boats and all our work is done according to the customers direction and to fit their budget. If a customer decides to keep their existing wood deck, we have them inspect it an "sign off" that they are accepting the risk for not replacing it. We have seen decks that are in horrible shape after just a few years of use, and we have seen 20-year-old decks that look nearly perfect. How you maintain your boat all year long makes the biggest difference. Keep boating and enjoy the sun.

TURN OFF THE MUSIC!! I CAN'T HEAR YOU. YES. I'm YELLING BECAUSE I CAN't HEAR A THING WITH THE MISERABLE MUSIC! IT DOESN'T ADD ANYTHING TO YOUR VIDEO. Which would be very valuable to me if you didn't have music blaring. Bye. I'm finding a nice, quiet video.
