Just to comment on the engine, Nanni is a now french Company (originally Italian) that make marine engines. The smaller models (up to 250HP) are essentially marinized Toyota or kubota engines. They are very reliable and spare parts are easily sourced all over the world as they can be bought from car dealers.

@Tulasendlesssummer6 жыл бұрын
If he were to use it commercially then yes, the coast guard would have to inspect and certify it. For insurance purposes a professional surveyor could survey the boat and value it. Other than those two scenarios it’s all at your own risk.

A better way to make a tube is to wrap a cardboard tube. Then after it all sets throw the whole thing in a pool and the cardboard falls apart and can be easily pulled out of the inside. Thats how the guys making high performance model rockets do it. You never want to mix fiberglass cloth and carbon fiber in the same layup. Ironically it is weaker than either one alone.

Carbon fiber is not stronger than fiberglass by weight. It is stiffer. Since in many things like mounts and things you actually want some flxibility in the part to prevent cracking, its really better to use fiberglass...especially if you are plastering carbonfiber with too much resin anyway.

Hey guys, love what you have. Make it safe, but don't feel carbon is a need for you and you boat. It expensive and while strong,, it is actually more likely to break, as all carbon pieces are purpose built. Stainless Stanchions will bend and be repairable, carbon one will break and need to be replaced. You are cruising, not racing, so a couple of extra kg's for your boat, probably makes for a safer boat.

@t.richards77296 жыл бұрын
So...We've heard from Sierra (Jetty) & Billy....I like both of you and have watched all your videos for quite some time. By the way, I never assumed anything. I have made logical postulations based on the limited info provided. I have made no assumptions. Please set me straight. Why don't you tell us about your friend and how he's paying for all of this. Doubtful he's working as a lifeguard, working at the local surf shop or local library, or waiting tables at the local diner. Maybe he's a wealthy attorney on sabbatical. Perhaps a hedge fund wunderkid. Probably not as most of them are losing money. Mega bucks are involved. Can't pull the wool over my eyes as I used to own a sizeable sail boat...you know your mantra...BOAT ...break out another thousand. If I remember correctly, any project I had on my boat took 3 times as long as planned & cost 3 times the original cost estimate. The only thing more expensive than restoring/upgrading a boat is restoring an airplane. Its a legitimate question. You both tell me I'm wrong so now it's time to tell me where I ere. Enquiring minds want to know.
@JettytheGypsy6 жыл бұрын
He runs a local family owned Christmas tree business and is a very hard worker if I do say so myself.
@t.richards77296 жыл бұрын
Family owned...OK, I got it now. Grandpa or Daddy bought the land and built the business...he runs it now, or inherited it, whilst sailing in the Pacific & Carribe. That's totally different that what I initially said (sarcasm, for those so challenged).

Carbonfiber fails without warning. It fractures like actual crystal glass in that sense. Therefore its a horrible material if you need to be able notice a weakening problem to fix BEFORE it fails out in the middle of nowhere. Carbon fiber is only best when you need STIFFNESS not strength. Fiberglass is stronger. Only high performance wings and something like formula one car struts need it because if they flex then the driving characteristics change drastically. Your average mounting point or radar pole doenst benefit from that stiffness especially since it is weaker than fiberglass and fractures without any warning. Regarding fiberglass vs carbonfiber and why you dont mix them and why fiberglass is usually better, this is the essential video to watch m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXm7h5lmiMZ9pqM Carbon fiber is not stronger than fiberglass by weight. I believe carbon fiber IS stronger than fiberglass in tensile and compression strength. It will only fracture if it has been compromised by being chipped or nicked then stressed. You seem to be an expert on the subject, are you a materials engineer?

Cover the cardboard tube with old video tape. Just wrap it round and round. Once dry, just pull the tape away leaving a tube.
