"316 stainless and titanium are very similar on the Galvanic scale. So there is very little risk, even in the face of an electrolyte like salt water. See the voltage difference here and compare it to Aluminum and Stainless which we all see on boats. structx.com/Material_Properties_001.html" -John Franta, Colligo Marine

Thos titanium chain plates look like a damn good idea, I have inverted "T" style plates glassed into my deck, and there is no way to pull or inspect them without carving out the glass they are bedded in. I am thinking if I make the same thing out of Titanium that I would never have to worry about them again because no bolts!

Aye Captain Billy. Its been one of those things that makes me lose sleep at night. I think you can come up with a better plan then what you have now with your bird striker set up. You want a "torsion bar" all the way across. Inside or on top you pick it would be more balanced action then the one way bird striker set up either way its more work but a better more reliable set up imho.

long chainplates are usually facilitating lowering of the mast to go under a bridge. And then there would be a pivot point at bottom your mast; but I do not see that. Perhaps a previous owner was planning on it but never got to it.

When we installed grade 5 titanium chain plates I wanted to go with stainless or a lesser grade Ti bolt because of the cost but the supplier, Allied Titanium, insisted we use the same Ti5 grade bolts. Ti next to 304 stainless is not that much of a problem, similar to bronze next to stainless but why take chances with such an important part of a boat. A couple dinners out, an airplane ticket home, all cost more.

One possibility for the length of the original chainplate: Is your mast deck-stepped? Does it have the option of inserting a pivot pin to let it hinge aft? Did the pivot point of the turnbuckle end up level with the base of the mast? If so, that allows you to lower the mast using a tackle on the forestay without the shrouds going slack as the mast lowers...

Pardon my ignorance if this is a silly question, but since the titanium chain plates and stainless steel bolts are somewhat dissimilar metals, are there any concerns about electrolytic or galvanic corrosion between the two over the long term, or are they close enough on the scale that it shouldn’t matter?

Though titanium does not corrode in normal atmospheric conditions, it is still subject to fatigue. Fatigue is the reason most chainplates fail. Insurance companies consider the life of rigging hardware to be about 10 years.
