Glad you found it useful. Based on history, OT will take a while to release an upgraded model. You should not worry about water in the cup holder or barely any water that can be on the deck. These are not big issues at all to wait a few years for a new model. Personally, I would rather enjoy the kayak now if thats what I wanted. If/when a new model comes out, I would upgrade. I highly recommend you demo and try out one of these kayaks. I'm sure it would help you make up your mind. Good luck!

4 mph seems a little slow, but maybe I’m expecting too much. Most everything else about the Town & Country kayak sounds very appealing. I’ll be on the lookout to see one that is fully loaded to fish in person. Great video and thank you for posting.
@Khaymen223

Recreationally, 4mph is ok. But for kayak tournaments that allow motors, 4mph is horrible. Fishermen using torqueedos are easily hitting 6 mph. When getting across the lake is time sensitive, 4 mph vs 6-8 isn't good. Also racing back to the dock when a storm bearing down, 4 mph is very slow
@KayakOutbreak
@KayakOutbreak Жыл бұрын
I’m happy with 4mph, even though you only get that in calm waters. Back in the day I was pedaling my pedal kayak at 2.5-3.5mph, so I’m not the one to complain. The good thing is, you got options these days!

I have been saving my brains out just for the pdl 106..lol..I am a boat builder by trade and the first thing I would do if I'm lucky enough to get one is set the yak upside down on saw horses and put 3 coats of McGwires wax on the bottom and sides to help with sun fade and mud stains..great video.

@@KayakOutbreak We've been with old town for a couple of months now. The customer service alone with old town is beyond any other competitor. Am glad you mentioned the water in cup holder situation. Lol, but can I suggest that you announce or old town advise that when you get the new kayak to go over everything, tighten all screws and suggest using the blue loctite. Many issues are of pins and screws and nuts coming off example the rudder. Just a thought ;)
@KayakOutbreak
@KayakOutbreak 4 жыл бұрын
It's definitely important. I haven't personally experienced those minor issues that's why didn't even consider to say that in the video. I've been following the sportsman group on FB for a while, and it didn't seem like a very common issue. But it's always a good idea to check the screws. And I agree, OT has an amazing customer service experience. I think they know that other companies lack in that aspect, and a good business always has customers in mind. That's the formula for success

the only 2 complaints i have with this kayak.. are... cammo/color selection... and the rudder system which is plastic and seems to struggle with an heavier current... this is an awesome package overall... but quite high on the price. it is well made. The placement of the motor is great... the more sea deck is mo betta.. i am tall and at 230 pounds/i have to use an bigger yak.. it is perfect for saltwater/inshore/bay fishing... which i love... id like to see an saltwater version of the minn kota supplied... perhaps an ulterra... with ALL the bells and whistles.. this yak is 1 step above the HOBIES at this time... but, changes will be made to compete for 1st place... im not an fan of the BIXBY motor..

Excellent clear and informative review, thank you. I dunno, I"m not 100% sold on the concept here. I get it that the deck is splendid with all that space, and it's a superbly built kayak, but personally speaking, I would have preferred if the Motor went in position so that you could have a pedal drive option. That said, I suppose you can't have the deck space otherwise, so that's the trade off for a powered Kayak with only paddle back up if a battery fails, or you drop the hand control overboard, (does it float?) or you loose power for whatever reason.
@KayakOutbreak
@KayakOutbreak 3 жыл бұрын
Understandable! Having a motor and pedal drive compatability would make for a so-so kayak. It's either one or the other. Motor would have to be closer to the middle of the kayak, and that wouldn't be ideal. I understand that you're worried about power, or anything that can fail. Think about this - when your pedal drive breaks, you will be in the same situation. Plenty of times I've seen people break their Hobie Drive fins, cable snaps, pedal drive props break, pedal drive pedal falls off - you name it. I've broken a paddle on a paddle only kayak before. Things happen! Do you think chances are higher with electric hardware failing? Probably. I feel comfortable being 2+ miles out on Lake St Clair. I have top of the line lithium battery, battery meter, and more importantly I trust the Minn Kota motor. Chances are I will encounter issues in the future. But that doesn't stop me going out there. You always have to think ahead, have a back up plan, and if all fails, just paddle back in. Be safe out there and make smart decisions. The kayak is not for everyone. I am glad, however, that you found the video at least somewhat helpful and informative. In the end, my goal was to inform people and make everyone think of things that they may not have. Good luck out there!

The weight capacity is about 427lbs, so you should technically be ok with minimal gear. You'd also have to go for the lightest battery you can get. Lead acid batteries weigh like 70lbs, so you'd have no more room for gear. But all of this is technical. I think your best bet would be to go to Old Town Autopilot owners group on Facebook and ask the same question!

This is as good of a review on the ap136 that exists! And as you know there are several very good reviews that have been posted this past year. You were methodical and thorough and really explained the experience of fishing in the kayak. Thank you so much for posting this. Excellent content! I am considering getting this kayak next spring and I have a few questions for you. Can you please describe more details of the battery you use and the run times you get in terms of distance travelled and speed setting used? Can you cover 10 miles in ocean current? Can you cover 20 miles? Are you using a 100ah lithium batter and would using a 200ah battery be feasible in your opinion? Any reply would be greatly appreciated. Tim
@KayakOutbreak
@KayakOutbreak 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. People like you is exactly why I made this video. I appreciate your feedback. Battery concerns is definitely top of the list for me when talking about a motorized kayak. As I mentioned in the video, 12+ miles is about what you can expect full throttle. In perfect conditions, that should push you at 4+mph speeds. When going against decent current (detroit river for me), you'll average 2.5-3+ mph. So, I'd say technically the range should drop. You also need to consider that you will be fishing - slowing down and being spot locked. That will preserve battery life dramatically. It's very hard to define these numbers into actually how far you will be able to go. With a 100ah battery, I am completely confident that I will be able to go as far as I want on bigger lakes, but I do need to preserve battery life. Most of the time, I move around at 80%. That gives me a decent average speed and good efficiency. When I'm heading back in, or my fishing trip is coming to an end, I don't preserve battery anymore. Honestly, a battery meter is a must. Its like having your fuel meter in your car. The one I have is called Victron. Pricy, but works as advertised. Cheaper option is AiLi. No bluetooth app, but good price. With 200ah of battery, you could forget about running out of juice. Keep in mind, a 200ah battery wouldn't fit in the battery box, and maybe not even under the seat, so you would need to split it into 2x100. Personally, 200 would be too much. I think 150 is plenty for those that want to travel really far. I'm actually considering a 50 to use as a back up for long trips, but I'll see how this year goes and if I even need it. Anyways, the point is, you will probably buy a 1x100ah battery first, and you might as well test it to see if its enough for you. If it's not enough, buy more. One other thing, because you're not getting tired from going from spot to spot, you will feel like you're not going far enough. In reality, with a pedal kayak you would be really tired - unless you ride 50 miles on a bicycle. In summary, I use speed 8 (80%) most of the time to travel from spot to spot. Seems to be enough so far and I'm happy and confident with the kayak. Hope this helps.

@@KayakOutbreak more great information thanks! I will have the next few months to get things set up, your advice is right in line with what I had figured. The power meter is essential and I think 100ah battery with self monitoring capability and a decent charger will be best to start off with. I will keep you updated on how I make out, thanks again, stay safe. Tim C.

My buddy has the PA14 with an Xi3 motor. I have the Autopilot 136. For somebody like me who likes the trolling motor / fish finder interactivity... it's Really a bummer that there's no ipilot link on the Autopilot 136. But that's expensive tech I suppose. I'm likely going with the PA14 with a saltwater ready trolling motor (cut down) that links with my chartplotter.. Or maybe there's a way (or there will become a way) to retrofit a motor with ipilot link to a chartplotter. That would be the Cats meow!

Would plugging scupper holes cause me to still end up with a puddle of water by my feet on only lakes an rivers?
@KayakOutbreak
@KayakOutbreak 4 жыл бұрын
I would say no. Not even if you don't plug them in, the water drains very quickly. There's one low spot closest to the seat, but barely any water stays there. In rough water, some water will rush through scuppers, but will drain quickly. It's a very dry kayak comparable to many kayaks out there!

@@robscorner4741 I’m very happy with it. I have a Minn Kota trolling motor that I can put on the front if I want. I like being able to use the trolling motor or pedal drive depending on the situation. Also having both, means if either one was to fail while on the water, I don’t have to paddle 6 miles back to the ramp, unless I feel like paddling that far😄. Thanks for a great review! Questions: What landing gear (make/model) are you using? What issues did you run into when installing the landing gear? Has there been any issues with the frame/hull since installation? Thank you!
@KayakOutbreak
@KayakOutbreak 3 жыл бұрын
Appreciate your comment! The exact model name of the product is Boonedox Landing Gear Groovy HD (standard kit/non specific). No issues, but not exactly a quick install. Mainly because I was a little nervous. The hardest part was modifying one of the backing plates to fit in the slot and then drilling holes in those plates perfectly. Somehow one side went smoothly, but the other I drilled holes a bit crooked (on a backing plate) so I had to modify the plate further. I'm super happy how sturdy it feels. I have full confidence in my install and in the plastic holding up. I do try not to move it fully loaded around. Mainly to make it easier on myself, but it helps not to overload it. But even fully loaded (battery and motor) I still have full confidence it will not fail. Not exactly easy to hold the backing plates and bracket under the hull amd screw it on. Could be easier with two people, or if you got long arms. Good luck with your install!

Thanks for your comment! This night be the first time I hear about the noise of the motor. Yes, I can hear it, but it never seems to bother me. I do not know if Old Town is working on a new model, so I can't tell you if they will be doing any modifications to the motor. A 360⁰ chair would require a dramatic change to the hull, and I really don't know if they're working on changing things up. Wish they would had keep that line going or bring it back having 3 different console ways of setting up the floor or deck was nice it's sad in a way how the Predator was the start of adding a trolling motor just to let it go. I'll wait before buying the SPORTSMAN AUTOPILOT 136 see if they make a Black Cherry I want the kayak just not the 2 colors it comes in but yes this was a nice video and review was the best I have seen in some time! God review, does the hummingbird helix7 G3N itnterface with the motor. i bought a new 136, but the motor would not power up and old town is sending replacement parts. There is a relay in the foward section that senses the kill switches and will illuminate LEDs on the board when the switches close. The relay will close and the motor will work if both kill switches are closed.

@Redcrown48
@Redcrown48 3 жыл бұрын
@@KayakOutbreak There is a small circuit board attached to the foward section inside. The kill switch by the seat and the motor down & locked must be engaged or the power from the batteries will not power the motor through a small relay also attached to the board. There are 2 LEDS mounted on the board that will illuminate RED when the kill switch is closed and the motor down. Mine didn't do that and they are sending another relay and I'll see how that goes. it's not covered or mentioned in the manual and i was surprised also, but it's there.

Quick question what’s the name of the landing gear you have ? and by putting that type of landing gear won’t that void the lifetime warranty of the hull ?

@KayakOutbreak 3 жыл бұрын
Boonedox Landing Gear Groovy HD. If a failure to hull or motor is caused by an aftermarket modification, the warranty is voided. So it's not voided by installing it, but if something goes wrong because of it, then it is voided. I'm happy how solid the boonedox is on the kayak. I have full confidence in mine.

Question If I put 3 battery in parallel or in series, will I be able to set the Kayak to travel 50 miles in a vector ( straight autonomously) into the sea?
@KayakOutbreak
@KayakOutbreak 3 жыл бұрын
It depends what kind of batteries you got, I suppose. With a 100ah lithium battery, I can surely travel 12-15 miles at higher speeds (75-100% throttle). If you slow down, I'm sure you will be able to get a little more. I don't know if I could recommend you this kayak if you want to consistently get 50 miles of range. I would be scared to go that far on something that's not a gas boat. See for yourself. Be safe out there!

@KayakOutbreak
@KayakOutbreak 4 жыл бұрын
I used technical information provided by Old Town to create this video. Per their website, it states that the total weight is 158lbs; weight of the motor is 25lbs. oldtowncanoe.johnsonoutdoors.com/old-town-sportsman/fishing/sportsman-autopilot-136?jo-page=2 I think you commented about making a dry box for a lithium battery and I can't find that comment to reply to it. Basically, the battery box fits pretty snug, so you don't want to go over too much of the inside of the box dimensions: 13.25" L x 7.25" W x 9" D Original box has pretty thin walls, like ~2mm. After my measurements, adding .25" to these dimensions is all that will fit there, but might be cutting it close. Honestly, I don't see a reason for a waterproof box, but if you need a peace of mind that your battery will be ok if you flip, then go for it.

I've yet to run into issues with my set up. As you saw in the video, I run a 100ah lithium battery and a Bluetooth meter. I keep an eye on it all the time, and I have no worries at all - even fishing big waters like Lake St Clair. The kayak performs really well on windy days. Of course, your speeds might be slower, but thats not a big deal. If the weather is really brutal, I dont hit the water at all. I think the answer you're looking for will depend on the battery you run. 100ah is plenty if you ask me.

I don't at the moment, but I can send you one if my explanation here is not good enough. I took a piece of HDPE plastic sheet (but can be made of anything) and made a floor for the battery. Not sure the dimensions, but it barely fit through the hole. This piece lays down flat, across two "peaks" of the kayaks floor which is not flat. Then, I took some floor mats (Google interlocking floor tiles). I cut a pice of that up, and made a border around the plastic base and I basically used duck tape to hold overything together. Even the base to the kayak. Still good! Battery lays on the side inside those borders and its a snug fit. I dont have any other straps to hold it down, but I'm sure you could tie one up before you tape the whole thing to the floor of the kayak. If you would like some pictures, let me know. Message me on Instagram @bogdankomedia, or Facebook - Kayak Outbreak. Good luck!

That is an interesting point and something I've not saw or heard addressed in any review video. A kayak that heavy WILL require a cart or trailer. I think most are going with the trailer option, which doesn't work for me because the whole reason I have a kayak is to access areas unaccessable by a boat/trailer. I will have to dig more into that. Would the Boonedox Groove track model work with it? You noted that the rear gear tracks were too far back for most people..that might be an option then...mount the landing gear to the rear gear tracks. That's how my Native is currently setup.
@KayakOutbreak
@KayakOutbreak 4 жыл бұрын
The gear tracks are attached by a bunch of self tapping screws. It will not be nearly strong enough as Natives tracks. Either way, you would need some sort of backing plates. It will be really hard/almost impossible to reach under the tracks. Plus, weight distribution wouldn't be as good the further back you install them. The way I installed mine is very solid and I'm very confident in it.

@@tnbackroads I tried pushing our canoe fully loaded using one of those $100 kayak/canoe carts that cradle underneath and strap on. The weight of that was comparable this the 136 empty. It was HORRIBLE. Will never do it again. I'm a tall strong guy, but pushing that up the grade with my two tweens helping was a tough go. Parking lot kinda stuff, sure, but to offroad, you need some sort of assist. It attaches to the kayak securely without at all damaging it. Can apply it's own thrust somehow only as needed. But is still small enough and light enough to be stowed for your trip. I see those fat tire e bike things, but what do you do with the bike! I guess you could chain the cart thing to a tree - if you plan on landing at the same spot. Seriously, the need built-in power wheels lol

I don’t own a kayak yet. If you were to tip over in a kayak like this, it would pretty much ruin all the electronics correct? And lose all your gear?
@KayakOutbreak
@KayakOutbreak 3 жыл бұрын
I would say most electronics would be just fine. I believe the motor should be designed to withstand heavy rain, but it may short the fuse box. I'm not educated on electronics enough to tell you what will happen, but it should have safety guards in place. Fishfinders are made to be water tight as well. I've seen videos of people finding fishfinder screen floating in the water and they still worked. Not sure how the battery would react being submerged. All the lose gear will definitely fall out, and if it doesn't float it will sink unless tied down with leashes. I've had some experience being in kayaks in rough weather (not to say it takes bad weather to tip you over), so I feel confident in not tying anything down to prevent it from sinking in the case of tipping over. If you'd like to see the stability of this kayak put to the test, watch this video. You will most likely fall off the kayak before you tip it over. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKirn3V7n79pas0

@@KayakOutbreak quick question do you think it would be best to carry a extra battery on board for back up ???
@KayakOutbreak

I carry a single 100ah lithium battery, and its plenty for me most of the time. During prefishing I'm more likely to use most of it. But when I'm fishing a full day tournament I usually use as 23 to 50% of my battery. When you drop down your max throttle to speed 7-8, you can increase range dramatically. And when you fish, you use speed 2 or less. So, if you want to be quick and have an extra piece of mind, another 50ah lithium battery would be nice. But you're ok with slowing down, a battery metter would be more useful. Hope this helps

I see where you're coming from. There are batteries under $100 that would suffice for average anglers. Do you think if Old Town included one of those it would be a better deal? I think they choose not to include a battery because of the added cost (price and shipping), safety, and simply because there are so many options out there. One of the cheap batteries won't push this kayak to its full potential (speed, efficiency) Also, keep in mind that there are $5K kayaks that only have a pedal drive. No motor, no battery. Thanks for your feedback. Maybe Old Town will read through the comments and takes note of your feedback! Have a nice day!
