Charlie, re moss growth etc, it’s a bit of a traditional solution but you can fix a copper strip to the roof just below the ridge tiles, enough copper is dissolved out by the slightly acidic rain and then deposited on the roof tiles that is toxic to the mould, moss etc, if you are collecting the rain water for use on the garden etc consider if those plants are sensitive to small amounts of copper. I’m sure there is some calculation to the thickness and size of copper required to ‘poison’ the area of roof but you would just have to research that, or just guess and put a thick strip up (should look nice once it’s green). As you have effectively shaded a significant part of the roof with the solar this will provide nice damp environment for moss so this might be an investment against needing to clean under the panels in the future.👍👍👍. ps I’m not an expert but I thought you did a good neat job👍👷‍♂
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. Yes someone else mentioned copper. Should have done this really. 🤦 I have a friend who sprays roofs with an organic biocide so I might resort to that if I see the moss coming back.

Bit random to choose this video to comment this on, but here we go... Since my wife and I bought a slightly unexpected "project" house nearly a year ago, I have been following your videos Charlie. I love that you use tools accessible even to the new/low budget DIYer, and I have heeded your really helpful advice on investing in one battery system for cordless tools (I've chosen Ryobi and been happy with them thus far). As our house is an old Victorian terrace, your videos on damp, mould and condensation have also been really interesting and helpful. This recent set of videos on your garage, I have watched in awe as you have tackled this immense task. Your videos really inspire me to take on more DIY projects around my home than I ever would have done originally, saving me a lot of money and giving me a great sense of purpose and achievement. A huge thanks for the time and effort you put in, I look forward to your future content!

Fabulous end result Charlie. What a huge job to get completed. Looks really good. Not many homeowners would attempt such a task so you’ve done really well. Easily as good as a professional. A couple of points, only because at the end you say you’d welcome any comments. Now it’s regs to mechanically fix all ridges and this is included in British Standard BS5534. Basically what you do is fix a batten to the ridge and the screw fix stainless steel clips through the mortar bed when you set them in mortar. It’s because ridge mortar is susceptible to thermal movement and invariably the bond cracks and ridge tiles end up being blown off by the next gale. Another very picky point is that your mixing your names for cement and mortar. Mortar is the mixed material containing the cement element which reacts with the water and bonds the building sand together into the set mix. A lot of people call it cement but really the correct term is mortar. You can have lime mortars without any cement. Anyway, that aside another great job done and a great set of videos. Looking forward to the solar panel video now. All the best. 👍🏼
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul. I wasn't even aware I'd called it cement - dow 🤦 I wish I'd known about those clips. I don't think there's any risk of these blowing off as they're heavy, and are well mortared in like the originals (actually they are the original ridge tiles) but I should be setting a building regs compliant example. Thanks 👍

Good to see your project and the snags you encountered. I am just in the process of re-roofing my new kitchen to convert from a flat felt roof to a nice pitched roof with similar clay plain tiles. If your fascia board (the board the gutter fixes to) was a bit higher then there would not be the problem of the last short tile. I have gone with second hand tiles. Price round here (Christchurch) is 35p reclaimed, 70p new. I wanted old to match the rest of the house. Smaller roof than yours with 2000 tiles at 40 degree pitch. I have watched a few vids on cementing and the pros use a much drier mix on roofs. Also, I think you should use copper or aluminium nails as the galvanized do not last so well. I went for aluminium which comes in 38mm which is 25mm batten and 14mm tile and no hole in the felt! Should get the frame finished and felt on with 1 in 3 battens to get it water tight in a couple of days.

Good job, if I had done that for myself I would be really happy with it! Getting professional roofers in is no guarantee they are going to do an amazing job. The house opposite me had their slate roof replaced a good few years back, and the roofer team that did it made a right hash of it. I noticed them returning months later to redo whole parts of the roof, obviously because of leaks and such. They were seriously dangerous also, up and down ladders, crawling about the steep bits... Yes I used to have fun watching them. Yes a good solid job you did and told us all some good solid hard earned tips!

I think that you did a wonderful job and deserve a full round of applause. I will say this on ladder safety - buy the Werner (or equal) ladder stabilizer - most people fall to the ground because the ladder rolls over instead of leading over. Werner also make and sell (in North America) a very cool set of adjustable feet - PK80-2 LEVEL-MASTER AUTOMATIC LEVELER - put a pair of these on my Werner 1520 and they take the effort out of relocating a ladder for painting or roofing.

Nice job and bet you are glad it is done now. I really recommend the ladder limb for your ladder hook. I have 2 and they really are like an extra pair of hands up a ladder. I often clip in a 40L rubber Flexi tub and then you can place all your tools or mixing bucket of cement inside it. Having 2 means you can have a bucket each side. Also worth getting a few lanyards so you can clip in your tool in case you drop it. Instinct can take over trying to grab it as it falls otherwise. Been there once before and don't ever want to go back, luckily I was able to grab a rung as I about went backwards off the ladder!
@C4sp3r123
@C4sp3r123 2 жыл бұрын
Another option I forgot to mention is of you are using a ladder wall stand off you can make for little money a wooden insert that you drop into the centre hole of the stand off to create a shelf for you to place tools, bucket etc. If you fix a batton around the perimeter on the top it gives a lip to stop stuff rolling off etc and use a batton on the inside set in from the edge to lock it into the stand off 👍
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 жыл бұрын
Jeez you were lucky mate! Thanks for the tips. Yes I was looking at those ladder limbs. I should have bought one and a new bucket. It's so easy to cut corners in a job like this and the consequences can be catastrophic - like when I stepped down off the roof onto a chair I'd been sat on filming the week 2 script, and it collapsed sending me flying. Nearly broke my neck on the tower rail! Yes ladder wall stands also a great idea and I really like the idea of the DIY tray.

Can I ask your opinion on the Milwaukee 12v drill you were using, ?, I have an 18v drill already, but I'm atracted to the sub,compact, for its size etc, your thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks for the video mate, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.

Hi Stuart - thanks mate👊. Yes, I'm pleased not to be waking up each day with every bone in my body aching! I'd say definitely get a 12v drill driver as discussed here kzbin.info/www/bejne/qX2QpWWQmJmqedU Mine is actually the combi version - they also do a drill driver without hammer action (the BDD) but as they were the same price I though I'd get the BPD. I love it as I did the Ryobi I had before. The simple fact is, for every day jobs the lighter the tool the better. I rarely pick up my 18v drill driver or combi.

My advice as a roofer is to anyone trying to re-roof as a novice is to ask a local roofer if they are willing to advise on the best way to do the job - if you pay them for their time I'm sure it will be worth every penny. This may cost you a few hundred but I'm sure Charlie would admit this would have been well spent as all the issues he had were basic that could have been avoided with experienced advice.

It's a good shout, that. Finding a roofer who'd give that advice is another matter though. When I get the house reroofed, I'll be getting the pros in though! Wouldn't want to do anything bigger than this on my own.

I'd be interested to know why you went with a wet ridge & verge and didn't use a more modern dry ridge / verge system? I'm guessing aesthetics?

Keeping it traditional really Jason - and true to what was there before. I've got to say I don't think those systems look great although some are no doubt better quality than others.

Great series. Did you consider copper nails?
@CharlieDIYte

It's a good question. No and I've read people saying you should use stainless steel rather than galvanised. I bought what I could get hold of in the roofing shop (lazy I know) but also took the view that the original galvanised nails were all still looking pretty good so these should last a good few years to come. 👍

When I had my new roof for an attic extension done a few years back my builder used the majority of the old tiles. He told me he had put yogurt on those new ones he had to use - I don't know the 'science' behind it but now you can't tell the difference.

That's an old woodworkers trick to match new and old wood - cover the new in yoghurt and leave out in the elements for a few weeks. No idea how it works though but it does.

Isn't the yoghurt to encourage lichen growth to match with the old?

Hope you didn’t have the lead time problems I’m facing, 3 phase 20 kw inverter delivery currently 22 Nov ( it’s 7 July as I write this)

Some suppliers were quoting me that. I suspect they're all that bad now. That's a powerful old inverter. How many kw will your solar panels be generating?
@andrewknots

@@CharlieDIYte They're actually going to produce 14.8kw at peak. Which is enough to drive my ground source heat pump - big old place the heat pump replaced a 45kw gas boiler

Hey guys. Trying to find the strapless knee pads he recommend a while back. Anybody got a link?

Yes, here you go bigsofty.co.uk/products/big-softy-clip-on-knee-pads I'd say they're comfortable but the trade off for that is they snap off if you're using them for rigorous work, in a way that the ones with straps don't. 👍
