Not a job I'm going to have to do any time soon Charlie given we had the house completely re-roofed/tiled only 3 years ago, but still really enjoyed watching it. The solar panel vid when I get to it will be more relevant as I'm really wanting to do that with ours. Several houses in the road have done it now and given we also have an EV it's got to be a no brainer in these high energy cost times. I just regret not asking the roofers to future proof the new roof 3 years ago by baking in some hooks! Oh and your comment in the below video about not having had snow for many years caused a wry smile given the weather we had a couple of weeks ago ;-)
@CharlieDIYte Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Really chuffed you enjoyed it and still no snow even over the last few weeks 😉 Don't worry about the hooks. It would have been real forward thinking to get the hooks and rails in without knowing what panels you were getting.

I would add a lanyard to prevent your hammer and nail gun from falling off the roof - it will happen! I used to think lanyards for the tools were a tad bit silly - but once you drop an impact driver or nail gun the merit is self-evident! You are doing a great job! It always takes longer by yourself. The tool pouch is a real labour saver. I was re-caulking my parents skylight on the weekend - after I dropped the utility knife twice and spent 20 minutes searching in the bushes for it I put a lanyard on it.

Have you considered fitting heavy duty anchor points on your roof? Big thumbs up Charlie nice job. On the brackets when the solar was installed on our roof the tile was slide out and an angle grinder used to trim down the thickness of the tile so the bracket didn't effect the fit. I believe it also had a flashing kit on each one. It looks like these brackets are about as thick as the tile so you may need to cut a slot in the tile

Thanks Clark. I think your analysis is spot on. I'm going to cut a piece out of each tile and then put a piece of lead flashing on top to make up for losing some of the overlap.

Hi Charlie . Looking very impressive , our previous house had an Acme tile on it which we had to replace . We opted for a more affordable tile because new acmes would have been to expensive . When speaking to the roofer the reason the old tiles had fail is they used to manufacture them to flat , so allowing water to freeze between them coursing them to flake . The new tiles today have a pronounced curve on them , i notice the ones you have have a curve so they should be fine . My previous house dated back to 1927 so way before they altered the design . Best wishes and kind regards as always 😀👍👍👍

Thanks Michael. The Dreadnoughts that failed had a curved design. I think it was a dodgy bake. Interestingly only about 10% of the tiles on the south side have failed. The old Rosemarys I'm putting on now though are lovely (started yesterday). Look so good. 👍

I never use the tapes to seal over laps, it’s only really there to water tight the roof if you leave the tiles off for long period’s, or in a very strong storm with wiping winds getting under the tiles and pushing water under the underlay but this is very rare phenomenal. So far though Charlie good Charlie, for solar panel’s you want to get the one that inline with the tiles and come with there own independent flashing similar to roof windows these are the best for not compromising the roof too much.

maybe use a small piece of plastic pipe glued under roof battens to give your roofing felt some lag as the small piece of cut batten might soak up some moisture.
@C4sp3r1232 жыл бұрын
Yes think that is a much better idea as the wood block will rot in time and also act as a wick allowing moisture into the other battens. Bit of speedfit pipe would be ideal and easy to glue in place and allow water to run through the pipe as well.

Hi Charlie,If you ever do this again, If you put a bigger fascia that is at least 50mm above the roof line this would kick your bottom tiles up and slow the water down into the gutter and stop it backing up and rotting the bottom of the eaves. I also think this would of helped with your tiles and the eaves tray.
