WOW! In just the first 11minutes I've learned way more than I thought I would learn in the whole video! Yeah, I'm super new--only just done the many tutorials, a little free-build, and watching several YT channels (caught you on Lathland) and thought I had a reasonable good grasp on ship building...but wow, SOOO many handy tips. Also, I was pretty lost on building bows so that was amazing! Edit: Also, watching someone who has been doing SO MUCH of this giving "idiot-proof" tips/tricks, it'll really help me not feel so bad when I spend 2hrs trying to figure out why things aren't working.

Love this! As someone who struggles with knowing which pieces is supposed to with which, videos that show every step and part selection are EXTREMELY helpful! Far too many "beginner tutorials" build the floor of their ship, and then fast forward through all the transition pieces and offsets.

Good to hear! That's kinda why I'm making this, I have previously done exactly what you've described: fast-forwarding over certain parts. 😅

Noob here(250 hours and I still think I’m a noob lol) but isn’t that a lot of armour even for a battleship?My latest design had 10 meter thick(including air gap) armour and had 16*16 guns(somewhere close to that) and it’s fairly cost effective(able to defeat things 100k mats more than it at max,SS designs)it did have lots of lams though
@BorderWise12
@BorderWise12 Жыл бұрын
It looks like a lot of armour, yes. But Godly Neter designs (and workshop craft) often have weapons that can tear through a dozen metres of metal with little effort. Unless your craft is very fast and/or has excellent active defence I'd say 4m of armor (not including gaps and the citadel) is the bare minimum, and a BB definitely needs more than that.
@amvistjackson1163

@@BorderWise12 yeah,LAMS on this are pretty beefy.Maybe to the point that it’s inefficient but I love them so who cares.

I tend to use Heavy Armor 4m Slopes around key locations as a combination airgap; spall liner; and AC booster. I like to think it works pretty well!

The armor plates for whatever reason have stupid amounts of float. The metal plate has more buoyancy than even wood.

Checkerboard pattern is best with wood and stone for lots of cheap bulk and health for cheap with significant AC boost. The idea is to maximize AC bonus and HP per material cost. Metal/Alloy checkerboard pattern isn't bad, but doesn't provide any significant AC bonus/HP per cost advantage. Those materials work best layered normally, like a sideways Alloy sandwich on Metal bread. Metal on the outside and inside, Alloy in between. Much less stressful to build, also! I mean, alloy/metal checkerboard is pretty good, my best ship has it, but I've recently learned that the checkerboard pattern is really meant specifically for wood/stone.
@joonalehtinen5462
@joonalehtinen5462 Жыл бұрын
I remember I heard something about the wood and metal checkerboard. I was something about HE buff that made this style of armour slightly worse than just one layer of wood and one metal so on... Not sure though
@dreadpiratelenny1348
@dreadpiratelenny1348 Жыл бұрын
@Joona Lehtinen You say you're not sure? Well, that's okay. No one is "sure" of anything in FtD, not even people who have over 2000 hours of experience. Even certified experts such as B-wise, Gmodism, Ohms, and others can only speak from personal experience and community consensus. Everyone's personal experience is different, and the community is constantly changing its opinion. We're all just doing our best!

If you are looking for a budget method of EMP protection, try using an HA block and AI connector (27 mats total). Make sure the AI connector is not connected to anything else! Since EMP pulses can't backtrack and take the path of least resistance, this will cause any incoming EMP pulse to break one AI connector and the remaining damage is discarded.
@countedcat477

while that sounds great it sounds like something the devs would change soon
@oventoaster955
@oventoaster955 Жыл бұрын
@@NeonBeeCat Personally, I think this should be expanded on, like a new block that's cheap and not good as armor but easily routes EMP to where you want it to go, and hardware that converts EMP damage to useful things like battery and laser charge.

@oventoaster955
@oventoaster955 6 ай бұрын
@@Mernom A 2m surge protector costs 200. An HA block+AI connector is 27. Since EMP can't backtrack, having an EMP blast hit one of these will cause a dead end.

i personally use the 3m, 2m and 1m transition slopes to round out the front of the bow. But pointy also works. rounding it out using the shorter slopes also can help slightly with your ship being extremely long.
@sgxbot

as you said the checkerboard is controversial. i think alternating layers would be better then checkerboard because of the bonus explosives get in close spaces. so i dont want to give the enemy a weakness in the armor to get that bonus damage

Would have been super useful if you kept the HUD up during trhe building process, it shows what blocks you have selected in the HUD and as a beginner with little knowledge of the block shapes, I am struggling to follow this as I'm not sure what blocks you're switching to half the time when you use your hotkeys. I give up.

Maybe you should add a line of block going through the middle of the wet block so it can be separated so if there is a list you can pump out water one one side to balance the ship
@Abrogator91
@Abrogator91 Жыл бұрын
What is that hollow bit at the bottom for? It sounded like you were calling it a "wet gap" but i might have been mishearing. Is it just for armor spacing like you have on the sides, or does it serve another purpose?
@BorderWise12
@BorderWise12 Жыл бұрын
There's three reasons I do it: 1. Torpedo proofing. It helps keep explosions just a little bit further away from vital components. 2. Ballast. If you're using air pumps, a wet gap is very helpful in keeping a ship stable. 3. Connecting extra systems. Having a gap in the bottom is great for adding on torpedo interceptors, laser transmitters and so on. 👍

7:03 Ok, so first suggestion... Increase the dimensions to allow for at least 2 layers of rubber in the following locations: 1- Behind the armor belt 2- Just above the double bottom 3- Just under the main deck armor In addition, allow for at least 1 layer of rubber on each side inside the citadel armor. This is to protect against EMP...

Wow. When the smeg did they add this prefabbing stuff in? Being able to cut and past sections has never been in this game but it definitely makes construction so much faster now a days. Even the fill command that's new. This would take me days to build a hull a few years ago in this as it was completely brick by brick placement other than the mirroring mode.
