Joe definitely should have won. He completed the task in good faith and intelligently. Splitting up the eraser(So you can do it twice as fast) and rubbing the two bits on to sandpaper for increased abrasion is really the best way of 'erasing an eraser'

Edit: to be honest, if I couldn't erase it because pen, I would have just ripped it out and eaten the part of the paper with the words. Much faster

Put it in the kitchen blender, or get a power tool and scrape it until it's dust. Putting it down the toilet is not performing the task. It didn't say "remove the eraser" it said "erase the eraser", keeping it intact (or in large chunks) but flushing it didn't "erase" it from existence. It's like Schrodinger's cat, even if you can't see it, it's still there. You had to remove it's viability as an erasing tool.

Human Resources: Sure, but don’t you think it comes closer to the instructions than flushing the eraser, or chewing up part of the eraser? The eraser had enough of a distinctive design on it that the drawing of it could have been easily recognizable as “this eraser.” It could’ve prompted some fun philosophical debates about what “this eraser” truly “is,” and what “erasing” truly means, and whether an eraser can ever erase itself....If you rub the entire eraser into dust, is that really “erasing” anything?
