Just sort of rabbit-holed my way here (KZbin!), but am now fascinated with these empty home tours. Such a comment on the excesses of our consumer society that even HOUSES are essentially tossed away. I know that’s not really the case, and much of this phenomenon has to do with the real estate madness that dominates housing in general, but still…it’s so weird to see often perfectly liveable homes sit empty and rotting. And you’re right, it’s really NOT up to private owners to solve the homelessness issue: governments of all levels have to get together, get creative, and start building social housing, co-ops, family-oriented purpose built housing. Unfortunately, the ‘market’ has failed to solve the housing problem. Here in Vancouver where I live, the majority of new builds are sold off-shore and sit empty while the homeless live in tents on the street outside those newly built empty condos! Anyway, I’m enjoying this particular rabbit hole. Thanks for your content.

Do they not have homeless shelters in Vancouver? The homeless in large part choose not to stay in the shelters because they don’t want to abide by the curfew, and are hooked on drugs such as meth and heroin.

I know everyone is entitled to an opinion, and that's okay. But I just want to give you my perspective. I've never been 'lazy,' a day in my life. I've previously faced homelessness, and due to the cost of living, if it weren't for my boyfriend's family -- I'd currently be homeless, and yes, I work!! We never need to look at any homeless person as lesser than, look down on them, nor see them as your enemy. We're all on the same planet and we're all equal. Homelessness is an epidemic and it's only getting worse, due to GREED, plain and simple. People need to stop assuming that every poor and/or homeless person is that way 'by choice,' because they're 'lazy.' Try getting a job while homeless, then we'll talk. Furthermore, there are plenty of people who work, some even work 2 and 3 jobs and struggle just to survive, because of what the cost of living is. Take a look around. No the wealthy aren't obligated to house homeless people, but they're the ones who can afford to do so, especially considering the fact that by and large, our government (US) doesn't seem to give a f*** how many people are homeless. There are entities on a smaller scale that try to help combat the issue, and some towns who have tried to help solve the problem, at least in their own community, but we have plenty of homeless people everywhere, not necessarily by their own choice/doing, nor 'because they're lazy,' but simply because rent and mortages have skyrocketed, some are 2-3x what the same places would have previously cost, just since COVID-19. Groceries still cost double what it cost, prior to COVID-19. I can go on and on. There are plenty of people who work, but can't afford rent, etc (then, once they become homeless, it makes it difficult to impossible to keep their job, eat, etc. it's a slippery slope). Wages haven't went up, overall, but the cost of living continues to increase. THAT is what the problem is. We need to learn to love other human beings. When you're fortunate enough to do so, have a longer table, not a taller fence. You are very privileged to be able to do what you do for a living. Ethan probably makes more $ than I do, as a KZbinr, and I am college educated.

Please educate yourself, because it's not my job to, and I'm really tired of the ignorance and the lack of humanity and humility that I'm surrounded by. Furthermore, in plenty of places, there are barely even any homeless shelters at all. Where I'm originally from, there was ONE shelter, men's only. The majority of shelters out there that are for women, require proof of abuse, or that you are a mother.

It would cost 1mil at min to build each of those homes in todays economy. Back in 2004 maybe $500,000 to build. But each of those homes if built in 04 they’ve all been updated big time very recently with 100s of thousands of dollars. Those houses are all very modern.

Another awesome video! 👏 Realtor here 🙋🏼‍♀️ if the house has been winterized, they're leaving all those cabinets open in the wet spaces to allow the heat to get to the pipes. Even if the waters off they can still have pipes bust. It also helps them look quickly when they're winterizing to make sure nothing's left in the cabinets. Maybe when y'all are done go back and open them back up the person who had to open them up for their job.

You are absolutely right. Homelessness is a symptom of a much larger issue. Many homeless people have mental health issues. Putting these people in abandoned homes is only going to delay getting the medical help they require.

I like the third house the best. Love the curve staircase. Interesting that the same family lived in the three houses. I’m wondering if all three families decided to sell at the same time? Did developers approach them first to buy? I find it interesting, but unfortunate that developers would snatch up the houses first before a prospective buyer could have a chance. Cabinet doors are left open so that moisture is not trapped, causing the wood/drywall to swell. Closed cabinets can also mold and mildew faster if the house is not temperature controlled and properly vented. I hope they were left open because there will be some salvage attempts. I’m of Italian descent. My great-grandparents came here from Sicily in the 1920s. My grandmother kept her modest home in excellent shape! Follows your idea, Ethan, that Italians keep their places in good condition!!

Really enjoyed as always! Love the revisits, can never get too much of some of these incredible homes! All of these were really stunning!! There is so much to love about each one, the kitchens were all beautiful and had their own unique feels. I really like the cabinetry in the first one, but I think the third one, besides being really beautiful and well designed, had such a warm vibe to me, like I could just imagine really enjoying being in there hanging out and cooking! 🤩 I think the video format is great! I do enjoy the intros when you're sitting in your vehicle, or could be anywhere I guess , when you speak a little bit before beginning the explore, is nice. Happy and Healthy New Year!🎉

I just watched your video of these houses days before they were demolished. It is so sad that they don't dismantle and donate. There are so many places that sell these items staircase banisters, windows, doors. My husband is a contractor and has had customers bring doors and stone from Italy for projects. Donate to Habitat For Humanity. I would think they're builders, use some in their new builds...it's sad to say new construction is done with a lot cheaper material than those homes. I wonder if those families were forced to move for new development. It's so sad.

I've always said if I had the resources, I would purchase a lot of broken down homes, higher some of the homeless to help fix them up, bc I KNOW they have SKILLS. It's just somewhere down the line things went south for them. And some times when they have no actual address, people DON'T hire them BC they are homeless. 😳🥺 But I would like to hire them to fix them up, and help them save some money that they make to purchase one of the homes. I remember watching your first visit to these homes. It was during a cold winter day, and there was a light coat of snow of the ground. Ended up binge watching many explorations on your channel that day. I want to say that the 3rd house was visited first in that video because I really loved the staircase in the 3rd house the best. I could actually see myself falling thru on the stairs in the first house from a misplacec step on my part 😅. It is a shame they left that picture behind in the 3rd house. I really liked it. As a homeowner of a house that is well over 70 years old and could use a kitchen upgrade, it breaks my heart to see what would look new in my old house can be so easily discarded and eventually destroyed. Poor people problems. Rich peoples waste. I absolutely loved those brown kitchen cabinets in the first house. They would look perfect in the kitchen in my earth tones decorated home. 😭 I do feel some of these empty dwellings could be converted into single room Apts. I don't know how it is in Canada, but here in the US, we do have a lot of homeless vets suffering from PTSD. It may be insensitive for me to say this, but I feel that ONLY our Vets should be given priority for short-term room and board to help them get back on their feet. I wonder if the Italian family chose to rebuild homes close to one another again as most of the kids are probably adults in college or have their own families now. I'm so nosey 🤣

This house is beautiful I liked the big fireplace in the first room you went into, the kitchen was humongous I’d love it if my kitchen was that big. It's no one's job to help the homeless, but compassion and help even with the small things can make a big difference. I don't like seeing people shove their heads in the sand when it comes to the homeless because it isn't our job or problem.

but it isn’t our problem. they have as much opportunity to walk into mcdonald’s and apply for a part time job as you or i do. but instead the greater majority of homeless depend on handouts from either the government or the taxpaying individual like you and i. it makes zero sense why anyone would even think about handing 3 large homes such as these out to these people. after they’re trashed drug dens in a week or less, who’s gonna pay for maintenance? who’s gonna pay for the utilities? not them, but us… i guess it’s a cold thing to say, but it’s reality. it’s not our job or responsibility to take care of these people.

The fixtures, shelves, and all metal things can be reused in habitat for humanity homes, also, all cabinets can be reused in homes for homeless people. Putting homeless people in abandoned homes starts to help them with their mental health, it will give them a start toward healing. Then the mental health services will have an easier time helping these people.

Does somebody buy the houses if they're gonna be demolished or why are they abandoned. I agree that some of the things could be reused that are good and not full of mold or anything rather than just crush them all down.

I’m glad I saw this video because there is another video of these Beautiful homes but all the basements were flooded and all the glass was broken in them & there was barely any furniture left.

No homeless deserve a mansion they wouldn’t appreciate this. Allowing someone who would and could afford to buy it is the more appropriate option.

It's such a shame if nothing is salvaged from these houses, it would be a massive waste. The basements in those houses are bigger than mine and my two neighbours' houses put together!!!

You should leave the cabinets open...it's to prevent the pipes from freezing and even though it's going to be demolished, it would be bad if there was water or frozen water in there......

The kitchen in the last house was my favorite. The layout of the first seems like a maze. I know the first and last had the same layout but there’s subtle differences that makes the last make way more sense. I also love the staircase in the last one.

Loved the revisit aside from you eating the stale chips 🤢 I would be interested in seeing places that have gone up in the places you have visited where the houses have been torn down. Obviously it would be just like a drive-by of it, but I would love to see what the area looks like once the house is gone.

I think that to demolish homes full of precious materials is a terrible waste. I hope they salvage as many of these materials as possible. And I would never take a homeless person under my roof. Look what happened to Elizabeth Smart when her family tried to lend a hand to a homeless man.

Housing prices are crazy right now. I feel bad for the people who didn't buy before covid. These homeless people you are talking about could be both parents working and still not being able to afford rent. Let a Lone a house.
