I absolutely love these old MR2s. Light weight, fast, and beautifully designed cars. I sure hope she doesn’t send it to the wreckers. That’s pretty sweet to see an eleven year old, complete, Alpine system come full circle and get uninstalled, in full working order, by the same shop that installed it over a decade ago. That speaks volumes for the quality of Alpine product at that time. It also solidifies your arguement for AS&S being the premiere car audio shop in Christchurch. A good product is absolutely nothing without a good installation.

I had all that gear over my days. Those X types were Vifa’s very nice. Gen2 type R woofer. 1st gen had a different basket and a silver cone. I always loved removing old systems. Seeing the mistakes others made etc. nice video James.

All your videos are worth watching! Keep up the great work. Those are ring radiator type tweeters very accurate, but not very warm sounding in my opinion.

Alpine upgraded the design of the type x components. I installed a pair in my truck in 2012. They upgraded from the hemp paper cone to a proper fiberglass cone. Not surprising, they're not as good as my JL Audio zr 6.5 components but they were loud and clear. A little on the bright side. My JL's are a little more balanced. I wish Alpine would have made some more premium speakers to compete with Focal and JL. We'd probably have even better products now if they would have.

That white stuff on the magnet is probably mildew. I based that on the fact that the screws on the amp are brown with rust. Leaky truck i'm sure.

There was also the other alpine type r generation subs that we're dark grey and red with 600watts rms 1800peak and after that then they made the black and red alpine type r that you see today with 1000watts rms 3000watt peak the one in the video he took out the vehicle is 500watts rms before they changed the color to dark grey and red with 600watts rms

The stufff in magnet maybe the insulation in the box and that is residue from the insulation. Possibly from heat on the magnet. Just a strong educated guess

don't hate on the paper cones. look at a lot of high end components. they're paper cone. there is a reason for that. it's called SQ. paper sounds better than thing plastic.

i have 4 sets of those type x compo sets one set in my daily and 2 sets in my project car(front and rear doors) I also have the type r woofer..... the swr12222d Two of them Love alpine but they couldve done a better job on the woofers Its hard building the right subwoofer box/enclosure for them Dont get the bass im looking for All my amplifiers are oldskool amplifiers from alpine i have 4 alpine mrvf400's 2 alpine mrv1000's one mrv t505 one mrv f405 and one mrv 1005v12 expert series again...the subs are the only thing i dislike..... am considering selling them by the way.....like your videos.... keep up the good work!

You do realise when it comes to speakers (not subs) the paper cone generally sound best due largely to the natural in built dampening the natural fiber provides. They're usually stiff too unlike carbon fiber which is about as hard as butter. only real issues are water and potential for it to crease if you somehow bent the cone.

Andrew Kilner exactly and this kid has no clue about paper cones, I remember having 2 Cervin Vega 15's with the paper cones and those things would pound!

I can certainly understand that paper could have better acoustic properties than other materials available at the time making them sound better. What you have to remember is that I’ve only been doing this 5 years and the only paper come speakers I’ve ever seen have been crappy factory ones, no aftermarket ones period. Also if it’s so great why don’t companies use it any more? And cost can’t be an issue because there are plenty of sets of speakers out there that you can pay mega bucks for and still get either plastic or poly glass cones.
@tatsumaru12345
@tatsumaru12345 6 жыл бұрын
Paper cones sound pretty good for the price. Theres a reason why alot of parts express drivers are paper. Some materials are bad about beaming, especially around 2-3khz. BUT! And its a big one. In cars, paper cones flat out don't and can't last.
@chrischoy9
@chrischoy9 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah sure thing, but you do realise that the climate in your car is very hostile right? It's gets extremely humid and hot, and while paper cone speakers sound decent, they won't for long unlike speakers made from other materials.

paper cones have better tonal quality. but the downside is they dont last as long and plastic/poly cone is cheaper to make.

Audio aside, that MR2 is a turbo model and still worth a fair bit. Bullet proof with parts cheap and easy to repair. Seen them with 250k on the clock and run sweetly and sell for good money. They just keep on going.

If this install was done on my car 10 years ago, I'd have the clown responsible for doing the work rip every single thing out and take my business elsewhere without paying you guys a single cent. The bloody amps were installed on a section of the chassis that had heaps of potential clean grounding points, but that arsehole decided "No, I'll create 3 holes with bloody self-drilling screws on the side of the door sill. That'd be a laugh." Monster Cables do make shorter RCA wires. Why go with the 5 metre length and end up with a coil of excess cable that not only looks like a damn anaconda waiting to strike, but may also pick up unnecessary noise. Even though these cables are good at resisting noise, that's just plain stupid. Lastly, the stock connector for the factory deck DOES have the required wires/pins for an aftermarket deck. Any neanderthal who knows how to use a multi-meter or hell, even just a test light, would be able to probe and find the right pins. Afterall, since the owner's putting in amps for the door speakers, he'd only need to find 4 lousy wires. 12V always hot, 12V switched hot, Ground and Remote/Power antenna. That power wiring for the deck is evidence of either pure incompetence or the stupid kind of lazy. If someone wants to run a new power wire to the deck, be it because of factory wiring issues or "dirty" power/ground issues, they'd run wires all the way to the battery. Not halfway through the dashboard to some random wire coming in from the firewall and certainly not just cut and taped over like that. Lastly, the only reason someone would run a pair of speakers in passive mode on a 4-channel amplifier, is that the speakers require more power to drive decently, than a single channel of the amp can provide. They'd bridge the amp into 2 x 4-ohm mode running into the crossovers. If the amp puts out sufficient juice for the speakers being fed, RUN THEM IN ACTIVE. That CDA-9887 has the ability of take advantage of active tuning and results in a much better, more balanced sounding system. The idiot who installed and advised the customer must probably have no knowledge of active tuning or is too damn lazy to properly tune the system, or worse, HE DOESN'T CARE cos it's NOT his cash and his car. To installers like this, who claim they've been in the business for xx number of years, have xx positive customer feedbacks etc etc, I say : FUCK YOU! An individual with basic tools and simple knowledge of car audio and electrical systems can do a much neater and better job in his own backyard. At least if his damn car burns down due to shitty wiring, he doesn't have to come back to people like you and get the run-around while listening to lame excuses.
