I love my Supercharged egg with two sunroofs. I saved mine from the crusher. It wouldn't pass Cali's emissions and it was off to the crusher. I saved it and got it to pass emissions for a $180 EGR valve.

I have a 94 Altrac but it’s not supercharged. It still is peppy but gets gapped by literally everything that floors it. I need to redo the paint on mine and also wtf is up with the trunk door never working? My trunk door literally never works except when I’ve locked my keys in the car 😂. I also hit a cattle guard with my previa so it’s got a gross dent on the side

The Previa AWD, especially the 94 or older ones they had better differential gearing and it does way better off-road than the Sienna could. There’s also a company that makes a lift kit for it. And then with a good set of all terrains you can go on quite a bit of basic trails with a previa and it also tows well with the 4.3 rear end. It can very much tow the 3500 pound towing capacity.

In college I bought my Dad's Previa. I sold it a year later and have regretted it ever since. With 237,000 miles it was running like a top. No ABS and it wasn't an All-Trac, but it was a beast and I miss it. Loved the video man, it hit me hard with nostalgia.

Which van would you take? Also should I do more of these new/old comparisons? What would you like to see? And yes my scoring system is mostly a joke. Should I could come up with a better scoring system or stick with "the rules are made up and the points don't matter"? 😀

Ethan, All scoring systems for this channel should be considered through heavily rose tinted glasses. An AWD LE Sienna would be fantastic. Decent traction, 3,500 lbs tow capacity and about 44 miles to the Canadian gallon are hard to beat.
@new2000car
@new2000car 3 жыл бұрын
Your scoring system is not a joke. Just say plus or minus 20 percent as a qualifier if you want. Ballpark estimates, when they're subjective, are great. No one will sue you. This could easily become a case of analysis paralysis; if you spend more time on a more accurate rating system, it will be too cumbersome and waste too much of your time and we'll get fewer videos. Perfect as is (for this usage)!
@metal4ever516
@metal4ever516 3 жыл бұрын
Stick with points don't matter. A lot of what people love about cars - styling, interior materials, and even driving feel - is very subjective. Certainly some things will be less subjective (cargo space, practicality, fuel efficiency etc) but not as much as stat geeks would think. That said, looking at the Sienna's grill is painful.

Great vid! Next to the Previa, the Sienna looks... overly complicated and horrendous, IMO. I had a '95 Previa S/C, loved it! I also had a '91 VW Vanagon Carat, the last of the rear-engine, RWD minivans. You should do a comparison on a Previa v. Vanagon, but choose the waterboxer, the water-cooled version, for a more relevant comparison.

'95 supercharged Previa was actually the quickest minivan that year. Ours gave great service fro 17 years, and we had many offers when we finally put it on Craigslist. Thinking about a 2006 Hybrid Estima now. Way ahead of the same year Sienna. (Big grills are directly related to marketing for China. Very popular there.)

Previas with a middle bench seat are more practical than those with the swivel seats. The bench has release tabs, much like the rear bench, and just lifts right out. It's awkward and you need two people, but it's convenient and gives you a fully open cargo bay. The other advantage to the middle bench, is that it folds flat in conjunction with the rear to make an improvised bed. As cool as the swivel seats are, I kinda prefer the bench instead because it's just more usable. The Previa actually was a shared platform as well, it wasn't as "experimental" as you think. In the 80s Toyota built a mid engine van chassis that was used for some of the Japanese spec vans, but also came to the US in the form of the Toyota Van (yes, just Van). The platform's last hurrah was the Previa before it was retired and replaced with the 1st generation Sienna. Also, as an owner of both a rwd supercharged and a 4wd supercharged Previa, the 4wd has a lot of drivetrain loss lol.

That Toyota Van was actually called the Town-Ace internationally. From Japan, to India/Pakistan, to south America all had the Town Ace. Had a few in my family back home abroad as well. Very cool cars but prone to overheating especially in hot climates

I personally prefer older cars. Nothing new really interests me. I love the rwd layout for the previa as well, the interior and the simple design. But the previa also failed the crash tests horribly. Definitely do not want to get into an accident with one.

We bought our '91 Previa LE new and loved it for 12 years before it got wrecked. (213K miles) We looked at the early Sienna to replace it and decided to buy a '93 Previa instead. While the Sienna did have a 6cyl engine, they were cramped and much smaller. Another option not often mentioned on the Previa was the "refrigerator" in the front that ran off the A/C. (We didn't have that.) Loved that van. Not crazy about the city gas mileage, but we got 25 mpg on the highway. I miss all the family trips we took in it.

Thanks for taking the time to do it; I really enjoyed the comparison. I am a fan of the original Previa they are so flexible: a people mover one minute and a builder accessory the next carrying sheets of 8x4 plaserboards in its stride, an 8x6 shed, a 6 metres long double lengths ladder sticking most of it out of the back (makong it looks like a giant lollipop from the side), university runs for the kids, camper etc. I like them so much that I'm currently on my second and can't imagine ever parting with it.

That’s the only reason it was outsold. It was essentially a Lexus type vehicle, while the Plymouth Voyagers etc., were at least $10,000.00 less. However, 20 years later, Previas still sold for thousands more than their contemporaries; hence worth every penny.

That Previa looks a lot smaller than I remember, when it first came out it was a premium looking vehicle. Those swivel seats are pretty cool. My dad had the dustbuster, it was terrible and the interior was even worse. My dad bought it because we lived in small town and GM dealer was family friend.

One issue I believe is that consumerism is worse now than it was in the 90s. So no longer can you buy a vehicle simply because it fits your needs but it has to look " cool". We bought a 2013 Grand caravan brand new. And although it may not be cool it's certainly has a million uses. Although I do have a pickup truck, the van can definitely be used as one with the stow and go and just flip the seats down. Have five kids no problem. Bring the dog too. Small trailer under 4,000 lbs hook it up. Sadly at 151,000 mi it developed transmission issues, and we'll be getting another one. Transmission that is. Oil analysis show that the engine is still in good shape everything else is held up amazingly. Here's to another 151,000. Really enjoyed this review!

I thought the stupid grill was the worst part of the new Sienna, but that "Bridge" is AWFUL. Big plus of minivans is the ability to move unimpeded from front to back inside the van, the "Bridge" ruins that flexibility. I'll take 10 Previas instead, please.

The 1995 Honda Odyssey was technically the first 4 door minivan. The rear doors were conventional and not sliding doors, but it had 4 doors nonetheless. And it was considered a minivan and not a wagon. The Caravan would have been the first minivan to have 2 sliding doors in the rear and I believe that was in 1996. Also, I love your channel and keep up the great work. I would have your car collection if I could.

I always liked the Previa. It always looked good in the full-page ads on the back cover of National Geographic Magizine. The mid-engine design was cool but, I did not like the poor accessibility of the engine placement below the floor and rear wheel drive on a mini-van was a negative, if you did not have all-wheel drive. The low center of gravity was good. Last week, I purchased a used 2006 Toyota Sienna XLE, with low miles, to replace our 2001 Honda Odyssey EX, with high miles.

I loved this totally necessary comparison. The Previa does look newer, and gorgeous. In fact, it deserved to win by several more points,as some more impressive features went uncredited. 1)There is a 30 year difference in the production of these vehicles, (since you could buy your first Previa in 1990&1/2) That should add extra points, since it shows even more advanced innovation than the 25 years mistakenly quoted in the video. 2) the trim lines are not equivalent : a 30-year old base line model v. brand-new, top of the line extravaganza. More points ought to be allotted to the Previa for its fancier LE package, which was available, though not present on the comparison car. 3) Re: durability, Most of the Previas I have access to personally have nearer a quarter million mikes on their odometers, rather than the paltry 180- something on the featured vehicle, so way more durable than, well, any other same age car on the road. Way more. Previa wins in a LANDSLIDE, not one point. Disclaimer: writer’s evaluation is not represented to be without bias. Previa wins any contest because, uh, well, it is unbeatable.

The Previa was and still is a good can. Previa means preview, and for years there were styling cues on Siennas that were derived from the Previa. Still, I can't deny that the new Sienna is an awesome van. I'm in the market for one now and you get features like a vacuum cleaner and a fridge, like the early Toyota vans. Like the pre-Tacoma trucks Previas are slowly disappearing from the US market. There's a strong demand in other markets for them.

True. But no one is ever going to stop at the gas station or at a red light and compliment you on your sienna being neat looking or anything or the sort cuz everyone and there grandma drives one😂 styling ques from the previa we're long gone in a sienna. Longer front end, no long raked windshield, no neat styling in the doors what so ever, engine in the front under the hood,I can go for days how almost every styling que from the previa is gone on a sienna even if your talking a 98-99 model nor is it egg shaped like the previa, the curvy dash etc so please educate a previa owner as to what ques from a previa are on a sienna,😂😂

@@wyelandlebeouf7202 For sure! I have owned four Previas. I remember being on a date and some guy walked into the restaurant asking people if the Previa outside was theirs. When I told him that it was mine, he asked me how much would I sell it for.. I would occassionally have a note on my Previa asking if I'd be interested in selling it. That would never happen with a Sienna

Do you think the Previa share Camrys headlights and tail lights of that same era? And If you come across a Lumina APV/silhouette/Transport that would be cool lol.

Previa shape would be perfect as EV, I think... Even after ¼ century, Previa still looks very unique. awesome vid, Thx. How did the automatic hold up after all this time? Thx.

I can't speak to the condition of his van, but my 1995 rwd Previa has nearly 230k miles and the automatic shifts very well; no noticeable difference between it and my 1994 4wd Estima with only 30k miles. Only thing I could think is the torque converter seems a bit worn, but not a big deal.

I got a lot of memorys in the on previa we had. Including losing the brakes, limping it home 4 ways on and staying on the side of the road. My dad was driving and went too fast into our long driveway, forgot he cant stop (e brake was forozen for years) he pulled into the drive at like 15 to 20mph ran out of room quick and drove past the other cars right I to the back yard, slammed it into 1st gear to engine brake then slammed into park to stop it once it was moving slow. Shift lever broke off in the panic so we patched the brakes, put the Cruise button in the daah, and put this rice carbon fiber shift knob on cause it was the cheapest thing we could find. Procceded to put another 50k miles on it before rust started killing everything even worse, tranny lines, more brakes, rad, ps lines, fuel lines all rusting out. Sold it to some mexicans, so they probably fixed it up and used it since they tend to be good at fixing things themselves

I hate the bridge in the sienna. Id rather have empty space to access row 2 without exiting or to put a bag there. Ditch the bridge. Less is more.

I own a '92 RWD 5spd Previa. 240K miles and doesn't burn a drop of oil. The 2TZ is Indestructible. Bottom line, is there any modern vehicle, with the exception of the Hilux, that will endure with that kind of reliability? That Sienna will not survive in the same numbers 30 years from now as the Previa has.
