I'm building a new industry for my HO Scale layout called Cambridge Iron & Metal. This third episode covers completing a scratch build on the main structure of my HO Scrap Yard industry. This structure is designed so that trains can run under it, so only the front two walls are "whole." In this video we talk about assembling walls, how I built the walls that "aren't there", adding windows and doors, including making how you can not see into the building, and as always some mistakes and how I handled them.
I've wanted to model this scrap yard for a long time, but could never find a good place for it. Then I found a spot staring me right in the face. This series will talk about building it, including the track, structures, scenery, and more.
My layout is the Monument City Terminal Division, a roughly L-Shaped, single-deck layout overall measuring 20'x30', but that's deceiving, as the shape is very odd to fit my basement. Follow this channel for videos on building it as well as a project layout called "The Grunge."

Lots of comments about my use of Lego. Would people be interested in a standalone video on the topic?

Most flat roofs around here have a covering of stone on them. So I use black "N" scale ballast for this. i paint on a layer of glue and then pour some ballast on the roof. Then I take the building and turn it all sorts of ways to get the ballast to slide to all of the edges. This will fill the seams of the roof to the walls and make the roof look really good. Wow, overhead transparencies, I remember them but I am a lot older than you because i remember using mimeograph machines too !!!

Good suggestion with the ballast. And have no fear, I remember mimeographs too. I can still feel the cool, wet feeling of the paper and smell the smell!

Thanks, Joe. IMO, weathering ALWAYS helps! Not just to cover things but to provide a realistic and consistent look overall.

you are helping me learn to build ,.please try some technique for putting morter on those bricks so newbies can try it ! If you have morter on bricks it raises a toy like model to complete realism . I hope to create a channel about only scratch building structures soon as I can so observing you editing and presentation sure helps ! Much thanks amigo !

You’re the second one to ask about mortar recently. It’s not a step I usually do, but I can certainly give it a go. I’ve done it in the past with mixed results.

Very good scratch building! That's one of my banes, seeing long cars overhang tight curves. I like your solution, and use of Legos!

Thanks, Paul! If I had unlimited space, the curves would've been a lot broader, but none of us do. This seemed like a reasonable solution.

lego use is great. I never thought of that or seen it before. Helps the structures stay square and solid with minimal weight. Prototype buildings have internal structure that is lacking in models.

I love your use of Legos for structural support and bracing for corners. And that building definitely changes the visual of the corner track being too sharp. Well done!! (and I guess I asked about the T-shirts one video too soon.)

Thanks. I was pretty happy with how it turned out. No problem on the shirt question. Can’t hurt to have the info in the comments for that video too. 🙂

Hi Joe, great stuff buddy! The idea you had for the "L" shaped Lego piece for the corners was brilliant. I too was a "Lego Maniac" back in the 80's, and was sad when my son outgrew his Lego's and asked to pack them away in the basement lol. That building as a focal point looks awesome, I'm sure it'll look dirty and grimy in no time ha ha. I once used the fat one piece I call it to make a stove and two of them to make a fridge for my HO scale figures, just cut the top nubs off. Your bracing was excellent, that should be super strong for many years. Dave B.

What is the "outgrew Lego" concept you speak of? This is not in my vocabulary! 😆

And you're doing this left handed. Are you using Tichy windows & doors? I braced my 2 story building with CA & baking soda. It sets immediately and is rock hard. Now that's a great idea using Lego blocks. Guess I'm gonna have to get a few. Cheers from eastern TN

Funny you should mention that! Before I did the Craft Store Craftiness video I was going to do a dollar store video. And one of the things I picked up was some knock off Lego!
