I adore The Secret of Chimneys, to the extent that it's one of my favorite Christie books. This is probably more on the strength of Anthony and Virginia as characters than anything to do with the plot. But I agree that there are too many characters, and it doesn't help that there's also at least three mysteries going on simultaneously.

I am diehard fan of Agatha Christie and this one is not amongst my favs at all. However her other book that is set in The Chimneys as well and has some of the same characters "The Seven Dials Mystery" is in my top 10. You can also try "The Man in the Brown Suit", which is amongst fans' favourites stand alone adventury type books
