Thank you so much. Oh my goodness. For literally two days I have been trying to figure out what I have been doing wrong on these types of problems. The help function on my homework software does not explain how to find the number you add or subtract to outside of the parentheses to get to the original equation when you have a coefficient greater than one. I was solving them as if the the coefficient was one. I had no idea. Life saver.

When the number is (x-3) it's positive in vertex form, when it's positive (x+3) it's negative in vertex form. This is because the equation is: y=a(x-h)+k e.g. if the vertex is (-4,6) the equation is: y=a(x-(-4))+6 hence the double negative which becomes positive like this y=a(x+4)+6

Doesn't the narrowness (if that's even a word), depend on "a" in the function? So that negative 3 in your example is why the Y intercept is so far down on the Y axis?

you would skip isolating the x's from the k (since there is none) and proceed as usual. you balancing in line 4 would become the new k. or if the balancing eliminated the k altogether, it would just be zero for the y value of the vertex.
