Completing the square to transform from standard to vertex form

👉 Learn how to identify the vertex of a parabola by completing the square. A parabola is the shape of the graph of a quadratic equation. A quadratic equation can be written in the standard form (i.e. in the form y = ax^2 + bx + c) or it can be written in the vertex form (i.e. in the form y = a(x - h)^2 + k, where (h, k) is the vertex.)
Given a quadratic equation in standard form, to obtain the vertex of the equation, we use the process of completing the square to rewrite the equation in the vertex form and hence extract the vertex of the parabola formed by the equation.

I'd been in honors all my life and recently I'd been struggling with Algebra 2, finals are close I have a D and my teacher told me I should drop to regulars because some people just don't "get it". I looked him in the eyes and told him that this time next semester I will have an A and I will do whatever needs to be done to have whatever I didn't "get". These videos have really helped me because they give a different explanation and they go into a bit more explanation behind why these things work. My teacher gives a brief explanation at the start of each unit and hands us a bunch of homework packs on the first day and a test date. Why is this man being paid a teachers wage without being a teacher?

Totally man. It's crazy how someone taking the same course as me at my same University having paid the same tuition can be having such a different experience than me. It's not that I want things perfectly homogenized in all regards, but every teacher should be able to break down the basics, as well as give examples of each variation that we will see in the homework and on tests. Especially when the homework is a test, such as with Wiley.

@@gunnarrowlett5851 well I got an A, 98%, butttt he did drop me down to regulars. You win some you lose some. Worth it in the end. The teacher I got for the regulars class was much better and the work load was quite a bit less, but the overall course was structured the same so a much better experience than what I could have hoped for.

there are 2 thing you could be talking about so i will address both of them. The first time he put the -4 there was to prove a point that it isn't the same thing as what is being put in the parenthesis. He put the -4 times -2 on there to show that this is what is really what is happening inside the parenthesis so it has to happen here.

Because when you take the -2 outside the brackets, you have to divide the entire inside of the brackets by -2

Completing the square. Honestly, I have no idea what the exact intentions are- it just works. I think you do it when you have a and b but not c. I'm not certain though, so search up some videos about completing the square.

How come you don't re-multiply the square by the -2 or 'a' coefficient?

because vertex form is f(x) = a(x-h)^2 + k. and if you expand and simplify, in the end, the equation will be in standard form, which is ax^2 + bx + c
