MDB is one of the most amazing live bands I've ever heard. I've been able to see them live a couple times and each one has been so emotional and intense, it takes everything and gives everything. They're simply incredible.

There is one guitar solo in their catalogue! VAST CHOIRS! I have been listening to them since 1996 and this song always struck me as weird compared to the rest of their music as it is to my knowledge the only one with a guitar solo.

To get a better idea of My Dying Bride's vocals you shoukd check out 'The Dreadful Hours', ' Catherine Blake' and 'The Prize of Beauty'. Aaron is a great vocalist, able to adjust his style & performance to the mood of the song

Also a suggestion I made before: the band Saturnus with their song "I long" which takes some of these types of ideas but furthers their extremes: even slower tempo, even more simplistic music, no vocal melodies (It becomes growls and spoken voice) and just more of a showcase for the melancholic elements to just become even more of a slow, depressive song. Really beautiful music but definitively challenging.

I only know a handful of albums by MDB, but I love the doominess they bring. Unmistakeable sound. They combine a bunch of great stuff: melody, counterpoint (like you mentioned), agression, heavy guitar/drums, interesting lyrics, layering...and they are artistic.

Ah yes, this is the stuff when it comes to Doom. And that recommendation was on point this is one of the highlight albums of one of the highlight Doom bands right here. And yes the live performances drive that point about Aaron (Their vocalist) even further were he basically acts like a clinically depressed person to go along with his just dead enthusiasm vocals as you describe it. Yes not for everyone but this is fitting of the genre, specially when it gets even more slow and dark than this song.

Like you said, these vocals fits with the mood perfectly. In other songs he also does growls, though I know you are not a fan of that. My Dying Bride was one of my first doom band, an all time favourite. If you want mixed vocals, I would highly recommend Draconian, another of my favourites in doom.

If you're now diving into doom metal, I'd like to recommend checking out Swallow the Sun. Their earlier work is really doomish (even in the funeral doom category) but in my opinion (triple)album called Songs from the North I, II & III is their absolute masterpiece. On that album the first disc is melodic doom/somewhat even melodeath, second disc is full acoustic with folkish vibe and the last disc is complete slow paced, very dark funeral doom. Overall I like songs With You Came the Whole World of Tears, 10 Silver Bullets, Songs from the North (acoustic from the disc 2) and Lost & Catatonic the most on that album but if you want to really experience slow and heavy funeral doom, I would say that check out also The Gathering of Black Moths and Empires of Loneliness.

if you want to expand Doomish field, check out the most atmosphere funeral doom (Shape of Despair - a distant dream of life) and, probably, best black-doom ever made (Ruins of beverast - 50 Forts Along the Rhine)

I was crushed when you didn't continue with doom metal week because I am a sad doomster. I think you made a good choice for an introductory song here. MDB have a long career in which they have stayed.....mostly the same. They've explored a lot with focusing on violin and clean vocals and I am pleased you selected one with an emphasis on these. To me this is one of their most romantic and melodic songs and a very good representation of a pillar of doom which the previous two videos have not strictly been. As a vocalist, Aaron is a master of delivery and theatrics. I do not agree with your interpretation here at all as I believe it was a very passionate performance. I do remember feeling similarly when I first heard this band though and it took a while (of listening to other doom bands) for this style to click. Doom can be quite alienating for some people because you kind of have to be interested in bringing forth emotions that we usually try to avoid. However, when it comes to media that is mostly what I look for, and I'm excited to see what you react to next.

Agreed. A lot of these..."unusual" singing styles require a bit of an acclimation period. And I'm talking about everything from screaming to growling to this dreary Doom to screeching -- all of it is an acquired taste. And in this instance I simply haven't acquired the taste yet being my first introduction to it.

My first time with doom metal ever was when Windhand released their album called Eternal Return, loved it so much because it was like Nirvana but slow metal. My next step was checking out some other doom metal bands on Spotify playlists and the thing that got hooked me on was the exploration of one feeling (the thing that you point out about some bands that is overlooked) . To me it's like a shoegaze of metal

Like Gods of the Sun was probably their heaviest album with no growls, but the song itself isn't one of their best. Check The Crown of Sympathy or The Cry of Mankind for their best doomy songs. Also if you want to look for something completely different, try For My Fallen Angel from the same album: the saddest song that was probably ever written, it will break your heart in pieces and make you cry all your tears.

Really glad you picked this band, they are one of the greatest doom bands out there. It is true the vocals are not the highlight of the song, but it is however very specific to the doom genre, where more often than not you can see this style of singing. Don't fully agree with your interpretation of vocals, to me it seems more like the vocalist is drained out of life and that is what doom is all about. A further look if you are still interested in doom is Saturnus :)

lol you damn right you picked the wrong My Dying Bride song to start with lol. That's the problematical trouble which people frequently face when they're first introduced to a band they've never heard before, the vocalist is totally capable of utilizing other types of vocal styles. My Dying Bride possess plenty of songs, i thereby recommend the song titled Within A Sleeping Forest. I have listened to ''Within A Sleeping Forest'' numerous times it's a fantastically brilliant superb track.
