Fun fact: A lot of their earlier stuff was based off the Halo games. Ben, the vocalist, loves Halo.

NOW, if you want the equivalent of this song on their newest album "Melancholy" the song you want is "The Dreaded Mystic Abyss" which is the instrumental of the album with a mind boggling barrage of solos! I seriously recommend it.

‘Underneath a Sullen Moon’ was my favorite personally (in terms of replay value) but I go for the whole album if I can. ‘Oudenophobia’ is pretty haunting, which I like. In terms of having him play on the channel, ‘The Return’ and ‘The Great Schism’ off of the Reclaimer album would be interesting to see what he thinks

Shadow of Intent are my very favourite band - I’m glad to finally see someone react to this song. Such an underrated song. I’d quite like to see someone react to my favourite song by them, “The Mausoleum of Liars” seeing as you’ve done a song from Melancholy, and Primordial - it would be perfect to see it done for a Reclaimer listen through.

Some stream of conscious thoughts while listening. Love the neoclassical elements in this song! Sweet and interesting melodic riffs contest nicely with the blast beat drums. Some super chunky galloping riffs in were really groovy under the solo. The symphonic elements are present and I feel, are integrated well to create a mood underneath the band. Love the harmonizing leads- really cool- and tie together with the crushing chugs. Drummer is killing it. Guitarists killing it with the groovy solo- shreddy and interesting rhythms. Love the monologue. Gotta check out their entire album for context. Love the effect of the voice. And atmosphere with the blast beasts and growling underneath. Super EPIC part with the choir joining and ascending guitar. Loved it. Hadn’t heard much of them but they’ve caught my attention last year with Melancholy. Gotta dig into that discography. Thanks for the suggestion Hunter and reaction/commentary Bryan. Peace.

Just found your channel from this video - love your content! I really dig the in depth technical analysis you give to the music here, especially considering this is one of my alltime favourite songs. Since you aren't the biggest fan of the vocals (here and on the other Shadow of Intent song you did), you'd be happy to know that the band release instrumental versions of all their albums, so would definitely recommend checking them out! I saw someone else recommend The Mausoleum of Liars by this band, and I 100% back that. It's another of my favourite songs, and is incredibly underrated/underappreciated.

Building on the discussion about speed in woodwinds and its relation to metal/classical you absolutely *MUST* check out the cover of Epitaph (Necrophagist song) by Caleb Canatheviphth here on KZbin. And listen to the original track too if you haven't already. Necrophagist were highly influential as far as the integration of neo-classical elements into modern death metal goes.

Heard of these guys before but never listened to them. Really dug this. Great guitar and drum work. I like how the neoclassical elements were enough to add spice/flavor, but not too overwhelming or cheesy/kitschy. I also didn't like the vocals. Only major criticism is that it all feels a bit disconnected, like a lot of disparate riffs and rhythms cut and pasted together. This seems to be off their first album, and I've noticed that this is a common problem with technically proficient metal bands; they often have the chops and ideas but not yet the experience to know how to put it all together coherently. FWIW, Nightwish, Epica, etc. are "symphonic metal," not "classical metal." Stuff like this tends to be called "neo-classical metal." The latter idea got started in the 80s with guitarists like Randy Rhoads (from Ozzy Osbourne's solo work) and Yngwie Malmsteen especially. Really enjoyed your commentary on speed in metal VS classical. Never thought of it like that, but you make good points.

the genrewank is just fandoms misguided attempt to hype up their crew of choice. "BUT THE BAND IS SO AWESOME, IT IS MORE THAN METAL!" while the reality is that it is just pretty music with someone charismatic and pretty/handsome who can hold a note in various tones. there is always better definitions but at the end of the day, such a quest is always futile. its just music. overdefining everything is already performative in nature and never ment to solve a single question.
