The clipping and overblowing at the end was definitely for effect. The album is a concept record about the Phanerozoic era, and the Permian age is when there was a mass extinction event that killed 90-95% of species on Earth at the time. So the clipping and blasting at the end was to signify all of that life getting blasted and becoming extinct. The extra bit of silence afterwards also portrayed this event.

Great stuff! These guys are so good. But they are one of those bands that make albums that you really benefit from listening as a whole, they are biiiiig into those philosophical complex sort of concepts. If you want to do a full album, "Pelagial" is their most critically acclaimed one, each song name is a layer of the ocean, going deeper with each one, but making a parallel with going deeper into our subconscious. If you are into these concepts, you'll love that part of it. If not, it's just kickass music, full of motifs throughout so it all sounds different but familiar.
@TheRealBSoern4 жыл бұрын
another great thing about "Pelagial" is that this album was supposed to be fully instrumental and they just tried out some vocals and decided to release the album as a 2 cd version with 1 cd being the instrumental album and the other one the other one with vocals. Which is awesome in itself. And I really love both versions. And the website of them was also build around the ocean depths at that time. You had to scroll down quite a lot. When "Heliozentric" was their newest album the website was a solar system which was also pretty cool.

Agreed, Precambrian is the GO-TO album from these guys imo. Statherian is my personal favourite track on the record.
@flagmuffin12214 жыл бұрын
@@Therealchrist Nah, Pelagial should be their go-to. Precambrian's "second half" (or last 2/3s) isn't nearly as good as the first 5 songs, in my opinion. Pelagial is just good the whole way through.
@Therealchrist4 жыл бұрын
@@flagmuffin1221 It's very strange indeed that you have like Pelagial, but not the second half of Precambrian. The second half (which is the half of the album that sets it apart from other metal albums of a similar ilk that were releasing at the time), is much closer to Pelagial than the first. Either way, the instrumentation compositional arrangements are significantly different on Pelagial compared to Phanerozoic(the album this track comes from) and Precambrian; which are much closer in that regard.
@flagmuffin12214 жыл бұрын
@@Therealchrist The first part of Precambrian I love because it's all well written heaviness. The second part I don't like nearly as much because it sounds like Robin Staps' teething issues transitioning to the Heliocentric/Anthropocentric and Pelagial styles (Heliocentric and Anthropocentric are still rough, but Pelagial was that writing perfected). It's well written, I'll give you that, but the writing didn't translate as well to me, especially in the production department where the first part of Precambrian has a fantastic guitar tone and overall production, but the second half constantly gets fuzzier for some reason. The best part of the second half of Precambrian is, funnily enough, Cryogenian, because it's such a good transition going from that to The Cambrian Explosion.

Insane to think that the thing this song is based on, is a mass extinction 252 Million Years ago in the Permian Period. In Siberia, there is a formation called "The Siberian Traps", this was where massive volcanism took place. A flood basalt eruption where tons of ruptures spewed lava everywhere. In the chaos, an eruption 4,000X worse than Yellowstone's worst eruption. 96% of Marine Life was decimated and 75% of Terrestrial Life was destroyed. The main problems weren't even the US-sized flood of lava, it was the chemicals released that allowed aerosol particles to carry nickel to the oceans, making them acidic. The Co2 hurt the atmosphere and freed methane from the oceans. This poisoned and suffocated the ocean and land as well. Earth's global temperature was 15C higher than today. It doesn't sound like much, however, imagine the everyday being like the Sahara Desert no matter where you were. This was Earths worst mass extinction, hence the nickname it gained "The Great Dying". The one-line "Long Time to recover: 30 Million Years" is a hint to how long it took life to recover, the remaining 5-10% took 30 Million Years to recover, which one side is known as Arcosaurs eventually became Dinosaurs, Crocodilophormes, and in the Jurassic, some dinosaurs became birds.
@codyspinelli56094 жыл бұрын
The Permian was a geological era, an age before the dinosaurs, and the great dying was an extinction event that killed about 90 to 96% of life on earth and the way these guys relate that to us/humanity through music is very brilliant.

Another great The Ocean song is the Bathypelagic trilogy off Pelagial. It's a little different but super cool. In terms of layered screams, my favourite example would be The Wreck of S.S. Needle by Cult of Luna. It's a female vocalist and is just awesome

Lyrics. Do yourself the favor. Eyes on the water Between the continents This is Laurasia It smells so different A strong breeze blows out here The ocean is pitch black Let's not seek shelter I wanna freeze and smell your neck Soon every one of us will be dead In the great scheme of things It makes no difference It's all the same But let's not get sentimental... Eyes on the water Between the continents This is Gondwana It smells so different A cold wind blows out here The sea's already dead Let's get in the water Let our bodies be the last Feel the cold Feel the night Creep up to me Let's stop and wait Until we freeze together And rest like this forever Creep inside my bones Where you have lied Since the day that we were born Since the day that we were born Sea level rise: We'll be among the 5 percent We'll survive the Great Dying There is no denying As the chosen few... Because that's all we've got to know And that's all you gotta know I am not here but you can Still write me Like in the beginning You're no longer next to me But this is How it's always been: You were a ghost Before you became real That's how we got to know That's how we got to know Now that you are not here Now that we no longer talk I can't stop to remember How you've been offended When you realized That I'd kill to relieve a load Yes I'd kill to relieve a burden Feel the cold creep inside I am losing you to your fears Grown way out of scale Yes it's true what they say: I don't love humanity Not a bit But I do value empathy While retaliating iniquities Sea level rise: It's the beginning of the Great Dying Soon it will be over Long time to recover: 30 million years Yes I'd kill to relieve the load Yes I'd kill to relieve a burden I am not here but you can Still write me Like in the beginning You're no longer next to me But this is how it's always been: You were a ghost Before you became real That's how we got to know That's how we got to know Contemplating, trouble making Even now... the air is getting hot and dry Sticking to your skin and your open wounds The sun burns us alive That's how we got to know That's how we got to know That's how we got to know

The way they cut off at the end is how they're trying to signify the extinction event the song talks about
@Stroopwafels1124 жыл бұрын
Regarding the clipping at the end. The song itself is about the Great Dying, an extinction event on earth (in the Permian period) that wiped out 95% of life on earth. The clipping at the end feels to me like the great dying seeping in. You feel for about 3 seconds that everything overwhelms you and you are about to be caught up in an explosion.

I believe I read that the the distortion at the end was intentional, and I would think it has to be intentional given how obvious it is. They wanted to create an atmosphere of chaos at the end, which is in keeping with a theme of the song/album of mass extinction.

I said this earlier in the week but I think it has to Do with the fact that many progressive bands create concept albums. Each song plays a part in the story. Listening to a single is like reading a chapter in a story (not a perfect analogy, I know)- you’ll end up being dissatisfied to some extent. Personally, I think you should listen to an entire album either solo or on the channel to see what you think overall. Ps- I’m a sucker for layered distorted vocals as well!

ooh, I didn't expect to see these guys here. I would have chosen Devonian as a first song but Permian is also excellent! Interestingly they ended the album on this song. The album is a continuation of concept albums based on geological eras - this song represents the Permian period that ended with the P-T extinction event, also known as The Great Dying. The next three eras in time where the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous which are ones you may know of. I assume the next album in the series will start with a song or two for each of those time periods. I reckon the clipping at the end is meant to be a representation of the extinction.

progressive rock/metal has a few important aspects to it that are used to different extents by different bands and artists one thing that many bands like these guys, Tesseract or Tool for example do a lot of is slow progression while sitting comfortably in that pocket, gradually building tension then again there are artists like Dream Theater or Animals as Leaders who focus more on making jagged timefeels work for them the other important aspect which you may have noticed is the willingness to include instruments not normally associated with rock or metal bands, like saxophones, organs, marimbas or strings like you've been hearing here and there from a few bands
