This band had 3 vocalists who all did a crazy range of styles. Unexpect has been one of my favorite bands since I found them in middle school. The way that they make a wall of sound without 90% of it being drums like most of the metal I listen to, it's fun trying to pick everything apart. You're definitely right, this band takes multiple listens to get a good feel of it. My personal request for them is Unfed Pendulum.

I did sound for them during their In A Flesh Aquarium tour and it was one of my most challenging days. But they were kind and helpful and just KNEW they were a lot for a sound guy to handle. But it worked out well and I enjoyed chatting with them. I was amazed that be bassist played an 11 string base and still jumped out into the crowd to mosh. Very happy I got to do sound for them that night.

This whole album is incredible. Many magic moments although it takes time to get used to the chaos, it somehow make sense after a few listen :P The girls I was hanging out with in high school listened to their previous album «In a Flesh Aquarium» and I hated it for a long time because I could not understand the appeal to such chaotic music. A few years later it clicked with me and I started to really appreciate them. The bassist comes from my hometown and plays on a 9 string bass, he is insane. I saw one of their last show were they played with Russian Circles and Between the Buried and Me in Montreal, it was memorable. Unfed Pendulum and Desert Urbania are epic tracks you could listen to someday :) !

At last!!! Someone reacted to UneXpect. Thank you!!! 😭✨❤️ Unsolved Ideas of a Distorted Guest is my favourite song ever. It is exactly as you described it: “A descent into madness. Just pure unbridled chaos of the mind” I always say UneXpext is the cosmic horror of music. If lovecraftian outer gods could speak, that music would be their language. 😍🥰👌🏻

Never heard of this band, but I really dug this. This is the exact kind of "way too much for one listen" music that provokes me to listen more to figure out what the hell's happening. Ulcerate is the band that over the last year-or-so has a been a fixture of my playlist for a similar reason; call it a fascination with something that's so alien/foreign and overwhelming.

Thank you for your beautiful review. Been a fan ever since "In a flesh aquarium". From the linernotes to that cd : "To illustrate with music what can be lived internally and felt in abstract ways..." so your idea of stream of consciousness-music is entirely correct. Also, may I suggest you check their lyrics? Because they are not just hilarious, but they also function as the "libretto" to each of their "miniature-opera's"/ songs.

Had a beer once with the keys player (who had already left the band, before they even disbanded), he's a very nice dude. They apparently had a chaotic time in the studio and sunk a shit ton of money on the Progressive Nation tour in Europe. A shame really, because that is one awesome band and I only ever got to see the chaos once.

Coming from a classical background, it reminds me of the denseness of Ligeti. Who wrote micropolyphony, where everything is so dense it becomes a wall of sound and an experience in itself. You could look into his "Le Grande macabre" opera, or his Requiem, or the piano concerto. They are all too thick and cloudy...

Phenomenal extreme avant-garde metal band. This entire album is incredible. There are 7 members, 3 vocalists (2 of which also play guitar), a pianist/keyboardist, a violinist, a bassist, and drummer. If you come back to them, Unfed Pendulum or Mechanical Phoenix would be my recommendations for songs. They are a little bit easier to follow than this song as well.

If you'd like to give this band a second listen, I'd suggest Chromatic Chimera by Unexpect from their first album of the two. There is this Mr. Bungle-ish feel of circus, but the chaos is more organized and discernable. The non-sequitur layers are recognized as ones. But non the less, it's the Unexpect. BTW, I wanted to suggest something in general. If you have doubts about which songs to pick, go to last.fm and search for a band and arrange songs by popularity during all the years of listening on the platform. It's mostly the go-to track.

[im reposting this here bcause i posted it late on your last vid and i spent a good half an hour getting song names etc. so i wanna make sure you see it, delete it if you dont want it here i wont take offense with that, sorry and thank u] hey this is a cool idea for this week ! if you do more women in metal, Margaret Killjoy is someone you can't miss (well actually you could miss her since she isnt very famous, but you shouldn't miss her). She takes part in 4 very cool musical projects : --- *Nomadic War Machine* , a more electronic/industrial/pop/gothic/breakcore project (==> not really metal and i dont know it very well), so i don't know if it fits the theme of the week and i wouldn't know what to recommend. --- *Feminazgul* is an Atmospheric Black Metal project (i dont think you've covered much BM on the channel yet), it is REALLY good and i love it very much. Now, BM in of itself, and particularly Atmospheric BM, is a pretty special genre, so i don't know how much you'll enjoy it as a review, since it is the kind of music you really have to be "in the mood" for. But if you do want to cover it (which i would absolutely love), I would recommend the song "The Rot in the Field is Holy" from the band's only album. --- *Vulgarite* , her solo project with 1 single EP so far ("Fear Not the Dark Nor the Sun's Return"), which is closer to black doom, also very ambient. This might be slightly more "beginner-friendly" in terms of black metal. I like the whole EP very much, but if i had to recommend, i'd say the last song ("A Decade, A Prophecy") is good if you're only going to cover a single song. --- finally, she takes part in a neofolk/noise band called *Alsarath* , which also has only 1 EP so far called "It's Bones What Make This Garden Grow", the last song of which i particularly love (its also the title song). Not really metal but it's very nice *IN CONCLUSION* if you had to pick a single thing from this whole list i'd probably say that the song "A Decade, A Prophecy" from the album "Fear Not the Dark Nor the Sun's Return" from the band "Vulgarite" is a good choice for something that won't be too hard to listen to for a first BM-adjacent song. Its pretty melodic and calm whilst also having clear BM elements. note : since none of these bands are very famous, i doubt you'll find everything on youtube, but i know for a fact that all of these bands have a bandcamp page where you can listen to the songs for free. second note : if you end up listening to some of this black metal and wanting more atmospheric stuff, it would be really interesting to hear your thoughts on the one-man band "Lustre", it is REALLY unique. Like, I haven't heard anything like it. I would almost call it "whimsical black metal" but im not even sure it has any of the usual instruments of black metal apart from drums and the high screams. i recommend "The First Snow" alright thats it for this very long comment, i might have some more recommendations tomorrow :)
