Car bomb. They sound exactly like they’re named 👌🏽 I love this group. They remind me of a more modern Tony Danza (which you’ve reviewed before). I love all their glitchy sounds and very atypical rhythms. It’s just catchy enough to headbang to but enough to interesting. You should watch their guitarist do a cover. It’s the most chill thing I’ve seen. He just rips through the songs..:probably lots of focus.

Ya know, as often as I've seen the band name I never made the connection between it and the sonic explosion of music they create.

I love it when you delve into how the music plays into the intellectual or emotional themes of a song. There aren’t many places to get that kind of analytical depth in an accessible way (you’d be a good teacher!)

The band has to use some really big tuplets, even nested tuplets, to achieve the precision they need to play live. Before they tour or record they get together and practice extensively, sometimes forcing themselves to face away from each other so they don't have visual cues. You can't do that as well with ritardando.

You mentioned how it's too technical or less listenable, I will say that for me that technicality makes it have more replay value. Its like a game you have more areas to explore so you spend more hours playing it. With these bands the more you listen the more you hear something new, or a new idea etc. So it still feels new after even the 10th listen. So for me the more technical stuff I love because its more challenging for the listener. While simple stuff I can essentially memorize and predict every moment of it so it can become stale if repeated too many times.

You're so right. The moment that I know exactly what's about to happen in every second of a song I don't wanna listen to it anymore

Completely agree. Some of my favorite songs are ones where I'm always hearing something new. And approaching it like a puzzle is exactly what I do when I'm critically listening to music. What I was referring to regarding the technical/palatable is regarding more casual listening, not active listening.

Regarding the weird sounds they pull from their instruments, from an interview they did for this album: "Everything is mostly digital now; I use the Fractal AxeFX II and that’s pretty much all I use now because it’s so… it’s like the iPhone of guitar rigs. Especially when you’re touring on the road, it doesn’t make sense to have all these pedals, all these loose cables, and speakers that are really temperamental to the moisture in the air, it makes more sense to have everything inside one box. There’s one pedal that I still use, I use a Boss DD3 - setting number seven is this cascading pitch shifter, there’s nothing that sounds like that so I tend to use that everywhere, but everything else is the Axe-Fx. A lot of pitch shifting effects, remodulation effects, even the delay and reverb that I do, are mostly pre-any type of gain pedal or amplifications, because that way it sort of makes it part of the instrument."

Didn't expect to see more Car Bomb on this channel. I just saw them live this week and they were so killer. I completely agree with your statement on the time sig being there to accommodate the groove. The riffs feel so much more natural (human) even though they are chaotic. They for sure aren't for everybody, but I can't get enough of them. Cheers brother!

funny thing is, this is one of their more commercialized albums and songs. meta is less commercialized but still is compared to their earlier albums. centralia and waveform are nearly incomprehensible unless listened to hundreds of times. those are my favorite albums because of the extreme satisfaction you get from putting that amount of time in and eventually being able to listen casually like any other song.

Glad to see more Car Bomb on the channel! This is definitely one of the least-digestible ones off the album. My personal favourite is "Blackened Battery", which as the name subtly implies is a tribute/caricature of Metallica's musical tropes, but done in a twisted Car Bomb-ish way. Also, if you ever do live drum playthrough reactions again, PLEASE react to Elliot Hoffman (Car Bomb's drummer) doing his thing. Absolutely mind-bending stuff.

I have their discography downloaded but haven't gone through it yet. I'm constantly fascinated by their combination of rhythmic complexity, the weirdness/originality of the sounds they create, and the whiplash changes that makes all their tracks teeter on the edge of chaos and coherency. More than many bands in the genre, though, I can usually feel just enough of a through-line in their songs that it never feels like just several random ideas copy/pasted together. I haven't done enough of a deep dive to figure out why I get just enough of a sense of coherency from while I don't from similar bands in the genre. Part of it may be what you mention about the foreshadowing of those contrasting elements, and I also feel like they do manage some really interesting transitions, often by using the element of time, either speeding up, slowing down, or maintaining some element of the rhythm between sections. Definitely a band I look forward to exploring in full soon.

It is guitar, would love to know the setup or circuit diagram of this effect. For a while I searched around how they do it... but I think they're tight-lipped about how they do it. Its a really crazy pitch-shift effect that would make Jimmy Hendrix blush.... My guess is it was made/modified by the guitarist and you can't just buy it. If anyone knows I would love if you share, I make circuits and stuff and would love to have a pedal(s) like this!

@@landrec2 there's a guitarist channel John Mor who is the only person I've seen so far who has sort of unlocked how to do his sound. you're correct that it is a special digital bank that Greg draws from (and also he plays a baritone guitar which a lot of people don't realize), but you can get the basic sound messing with a combination of pitch shifter and ring modulator through an expression pedal.
