I highly recommend you checkout this whole album. The songs flow into each other and the last track does infact flow back into the intro track. You can play it infinitely... without end haha

The whole album is one big song (in 9 parts) that loops infinitely. That's why the album is called nonagon Infinity. It's a concept album. That's why it has a repetative theme throughout it. In this way they could get it to blend and loop. King Gizz & Liz Wiz are experimental with thier albums, and have a DIY punk nuggets approach. It's just a driving energy with attitude.

We're switching between 6/4, single phrases of 7/4, (3 6/4, 1 7/4) and a bunch of metric modulation against other instruments. KGLW definitely has "cleaner" sounds, although I definitely err much on the side of "it's a stylistic choice". Not so much low-fi as it is just another choice of instruments - which you will find is their shtick, switching it up that is. Generally, their stuff is pretty squashed, but that works perfectly on some nice mid-tier headphones, which is another aspect: you can't really make absolute statements about productions without considering the multitude of playback systems. I do get not liking the sounds though, and you said it yourself - getting over the hill is a big part of acquiring new tastes, so at your own leisure. Their KEXP sessions (I recommend the one with Nuclear Fusion) have a bunch more dynamic range afair, so maybe that's where you'd want to hook into this band. Tons of picks though, and brace yourself for drums because they get weird, in a good way. Two super dope drummers, single-stroke rolls I personally find almost meditative. Cheers, nice take on the song. One of my favorite albums by the way, to make my agenda here perfectly clear.

Listen to Polygwandaland, its their “progressive” album, best album, they also have a series of 3 albums composing of microtones, it’s amazing

Oh man, this band is a trip. They put out a TON of music, 18 full length albums in 9 years! and everything is great, their really early stuff was a little rough around the edges but still good. Not only that but they've covered genres from acid rock to psychedelic funk to blues rock to synth pop to jazz fusion to prog rock and even thrash metal. Every album has something different and special. This album in particular is a cyclical album, each song flows into the next and the last flows into the first, and almost all tracks have motifs and riffs that show up in other places with different context.

Thank you for giving King Gizz some attention. They are incredible and their 18 albums deserve more attention. Genre hopping geniuses. Try a more progressive Polygondwanaland or some thrash metal Infest the Rats’ nest. 3 albums are explorations in microtonal tuning.

King gizzards discography is very impressive. Practically each album has an entirely different sound and vibe. For example, the album “Eyes Like the Sky” while not the most technically impressive is a freakin awesome spaghetti western that uses the instruments draw you into the story so well that I have to revisit it every so often just to enjoy the experience.

I've heard of this band but haven't gotten around to checking them out yet. I really dug this, though I feel like this is more retro than lo-fi. This sounds like a mix of 70s hard rock and late 60s psychedelia, and that's a pretty killer combination. If someone had played this for me without telling me the band or when it came out I would almost certainly think it was some obscure 70s band as almost nothing gives it away as being more modern. I've always had an interest in pastiches like this, as it's pretty damn difficult for any modern artist to recreate the style of past decades when things were often done so technologically differently, especially in music and film. In film there's Guy Maddin who makes modern films as if they were silent films from the 20s. In music of course there's been a huge retro-80s revival in pop, but not as many are doing 70s stuff, so based on that alone this was a cool listen. Really catchy guitar riffs and vocal hooks too. Just an all-around fun track.

They produce a ton of music videos which are often quite creative and/or entertaining. Like the songs themselves, they often flow into each other or are at least in some way related between songs of the same album. It's quite a rabbit hole...

Ah man, I wish you watched the music video for this song because it's very entertaining and fits the song perfectly. Also I get what you mean with the pillow drum sound, I get annoyed by that sometimes when I hear it with more highly produced music but the sound of the rest of the instruments here makes it bother me less. I think the production is perfect for the type of song they were going for, it's feels like you're listening to an old record from the 70's that you found in your attic and just dusted off.

You're right about the feeling of the production, that feeling of finding an old vinyl or cassette. I might have to check out the music video though since you're not the first to say their music videos pair well with the music.

Damn, what a fun song! I've been meaning to check these guys, but never got around to do it. Really loved the stuff. They do sound like a ton of late 60's/early 70's stuff, yet don't sound like a ripoff at all. I got hints of Led Zep, Black Sabbath (the vocalist has a bit of an Ozzy feel imo), King Crimson, CAN. Awesome track!

Agree it's a bit repetitive, but really cool stuff where the "Lo-Fi" serves it's purpose. I don't miss a "better" production/engineering - it's gotta have it's "grit". Enjoyed the well executed analysis of course 😊

I dunno if I would have recommended that album as a starter. Nonetheless, I wonder if any of the recording was done live, and if that would have had an impact on parts mentioned. I mean, this album has been compared to The Flaming Lips’ record Zaireeka, and little else is as experimental than that.

You talk about muffled sound, yes it's lo-fi prod / reel to reel, but you are also listening on bandcamp which purposely lowers the sound quality so people don't copy it. Like people already said i think you would like Polygwandaland, in specific the KEXP Crumbling castle session

I'm certainly looking forward to checking out more from this group. However regarding Bandcamp, it's true they don't stream at 320kpbs for accounts who don't own the album but the compressions is a LOT nicer to lo-fi music than KZbin's, which is why I chose to use the Bandcamp version for this one. There have been way too many times when I'll talk about missing aspects of the audiosphere regarding lo-fi produced music only to have people comment that the Bandcamp version has a fuller sound.

@@CriticalReactions Polygondwanaland is the record to pick up for hearing the offset between the two kits. Plenty other songs too, you won't necessarily notice it but it definitely contributes to a denser soundscape - much like sometimes people don't notice percussion elements on songs or something to that effect.
