This is one of my favorite songs ever. Jordan dreyer is such a gifted writer. This song not only made me look at my own relationship to my pain and trauma, but also filled me with hope ❤ such an interesting and thoughtful song. I love la dispute so damn much

I LOVE this song. Grabbing my tissues. This entire album is great from start to finish and never fails to leave me a sobbing mess. “We live amidst a violent storm; leaves us unsatisfied at best, So fill your heart with what's important, and be done with all the rest.”

Even if his vocals aren't perfect, though I'm pretty fond, I wouldn't want anyone else performing his writing. I assume the repetition in the music reflects the repetition of "get happy together, get sad alone, get happy together". People loving together are a last lost continent, with castles made of hope, amidst a 'violent storm' of loneliness and depression. But there is a back and forth between the two states.
@beatsbeercigarettes2 жыл бұрын
It's the imperfections that make it so perfect for the style and feeling of it. Humans are imperfect and with such daunting lyrical matter... it sits perfectly against the music. My favourite vocalists of all time can't actually "sing" though haha so I may be a bad judge in this case.
@saltytears47113 жыл бұрын
His vocals are PERFECT for this music. He has so much emotion. He's raw. It's incredible. These songs should in no way ever be sung.

Totally agree 👍 he doesn't rely on melody....rather, he's story telling with a spoken word delivery and perfectly manipulates the emotion of each word

You're teaching me so much about the language of music, and I find your inclination to check whether a musical element is a metaphor relatable and refreshing. It's hard to find people who examine in quite the same way. Thanks for taking a look at one of my favorite songs!

Come back to watching you do this lol. Goes from so sad to so optimistic. I love this songs build in different sections. The last section of silence and build to hard is stuck in my head since I first heard this song. Slowly putting in each note for the final riff. The short song right after this ties it all together in to hopefulness and is a perfect end to this whole album.

Great review and commentary. As a big fan of La Dispute and as a bassist, I appreciate the moment when you pointed out the impact of the bassline. A note on the vocals. To push back some, this vocalist is not a typical emo/post-hardcore vocalist. Specifically, he leans really hard on a spoken-word approach that varies in terms of emotional content. When his spoken word breaks to a harsher sound, he comes close to the typical emo singer. I think many listeners struggle with this: you expect to hear the harsh emo vocals, but it's not quite there. The listener then starts expecting the spoken-word component, but it's not quite there. To me, this vocal approach allows the lyrics to maintain a poetic nature.

I'm not the biggest fan of Emo, but this was really interesting. Though not overly technically or compositionally complex, I very much appreciate how they take their time to set things up and really build the tension and musical interest. Like a good suspense thriller I was always on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was coming next and how they were going to pay off what they were building towards, and most of the time they paid it off really well. Personally, I'm not a big fan of this style of rather whiny vocals, but the music was interesting enough that they didn't distract too much. Definitely has me interested to hear what else they can do.
@CriticalReactions3 жыл бұрын
Completely agree about the relaxed method of building the tension. They certainly weren't rushing any part of this song.
@DerTomatenToaster3 жыл бұрын
If the whiny vocal were the main thing bothering you, I'd very much recommend to check out their newer stuff. This song is from their first album and the vocals got progressively less whiny with every release. "FULTON STREET I" is my personal favorite from their newest album.

Love seeing La Dispute on this channel. One of my favorite bands of all time. So much raw emotion and passion in their music. However, in my opinion, their song "King Park" from the following album is the true "emo epic". The story is much more specific, real, and heartbreaking, and the musicianship/production is a bit more polished.
@lordsyn14233 жыл бұрын
I disagree I think I see everything had the most emotion
@ethandoingstuff14332 жыл бұрын
In my opinion the closest to "epic" would be 'king park' because the story is more descriptive, while 'I see everything' tells the story in an artistic form, via journal entries, and then reminisces on religion and death. I find 'I see everything' has a far more intense emotional peak, but 'king park' maintains its emotional tension for the entire song, with its peak being placed right at the end of the song.

This is the best song on the album. And the best album ever. Excited to see what you think about the silent breakdown near the end that slowly builds the final riff. I do love that you dont pause like most reactionary people. Ruins the flow of the song and the impact of specific parts. Also the abrupt end is because the next song flows in from it on the same drum beat. Check out Andria off this album too.

The vocals are supposed to be really raw particularly in this song due to the topic. It's about cancer and watching someone you love be taken from you by a monster illness.
@eyesores0up3762 жыл бұрын
me personally, i think its about a cancer of some sort. obviously in the beginning he talks about a sickness, and how it has destroyed relationships, and him destroying it (or wanting to) himself because of what its done. I think the repetitive aspects of the song has something to do with time and time again, more people are devastated with this deadly disease killing their loved ones. my grandpa is dying of cancer currently, so this song feels really personal to me.

I liked this, and I watched the entire thing. I just want you to know that - and have it said first - so that you have some assurance that this criticism doesn't come from a negative place. I really, really, wish that you had taken the time to do some further study and editing for this review. I understand that it would have required a substantially greater amount of both time and effort. I also understand that listening to the song enough times to do so would have been...unenjoyable for you, given your feelings about Jordan's voice.(Jordan Dreyer is his name, and he's an absolutely brilliant lyricist and wordsmith - a personal opinion that I admit may lend me a certain amount of bias.) But I still wish that you had. The amount of times you said "I'd have to listen to again" or expressed an almost identical statement...it is a song that only benefits from being listened to beyond the initial one. And you had so many poignant and interesting observations to make about it! From that single, first listen! I think this review would have benefited from: Footage of you listening and your commentary Initial impressions Final analysis If you'd listened to it while reading the lyrics. If you'd listened to it while reading the sheet music Reading both separately Comparing both lyrics and sheet music with or without the song There are a lot of ways in which you could have uncovered and conveyed revealed information and impressive feats. And I would have enjoyed it immensely, because you clearly know more about music than me, and I would have liked to possess the knowledge of that song that you could have uncovered. That's all I'm trying to say...i really hope that it doesn't sound overly negative or unnecessarily critical. Because I'm fully aware of the facts: It's your channel, I have no right to tell you how you should or shouldn't make your videos. It is probably not something that is worth the necessary level of time and energy that you would need to expend to provide such a video. Because again, I am aware of my bias; as I obviously place great meaning, importance and respect of artistry in this song. And you don't share my history with or opinion on this song. That's all, sorry for such a lengthy and unsolicited "critique". Have a nice day and remember the most important takeaway from this is that I can say what I like about your review, but I still watched the whole thing :)

Thanks for the feedback. What you've talked about is something that I've actually wanted to explore. My videos tend to mix the analysis and reaction stuff into a single video and, like a jack of all trades, doesn't really do either well. I think pure reactions videos are designed as short form entertainment (which my videos certainly are not) and the analysis segment isn't as thorough as channels like 12tone. I've actually created exhaustive, researched video essays with a previous channel and have a background in script writing and video editing. Doing this one-take, off the cuff style was actually super daunting to me when I started it. I'm looking at expanding the channel in September when I can give it more attention but I haven't quite figured out what direction that's going to be yet. I've been thinking about doing album analyses without the reaction part though -- just researched and multiple listened to breakdowns of why an album is great. Probably looking at only 12 of those a year (1/mo) just because of how much work they require that I'd be putting on top of the daily reactions.

It's a process/skill that I've had a lot of time to train and I'm glad that people enjoy the videos I'm making with it. It's one part orchestral listening and one part inquisitive inference. The analysis section is literally just a real time stream of consciousness.

One of La Dispute’s defining characteristics is their general lack choruses or significantly repeating elements in their music, aside of repeating themes. Honestly, it’s one of the things I love about Jordan Dreyer’s writing.
