@alejandrotti103 жыл бұрын
Two things. First of, maybe this is slightly better when you add to it The One They Call the Witch and, the intro of this one, Moment of Truth; because Octopath music has the flavor of mixing intros with the bosses themselves, and this is the only case in game when the intro isn't one of the main character's preludes. Second, I applaud the recommendation and the actual reaction and analysis. Also, I highly suggest (not just to Atlas, but for anyone who reads this) to hear the unique boss themes from the Champions of the Continents mobile game, which is a prequel to the events of Octopath (it's japanese but some youtubers published the music with no much problem). There, not only the individual songs are as great as in Octopath, but also has some kind of storytelling between the dungeon theme, the unique prelude melody for each one, and each combat phase.

I agree that this is one of the times where it feels like the two songs are really meant to be played right after each other. Like phases of a song.

I agree with you. The Champions of the Continent soundtrack is spectacular! I really like the fame route music. The theme of Agustus (final route boss) is very epic and dark.

There’s so many gems in this OST but I’d have to say the best battle theme is they who govern reason
@arjanzweers65423 жыл бұрын
Atlas you really should have done it with One They Call the Witch, wouldn't have made the time too long and the build up and the impact would have been so much better. The One They Call the Witch is basically the first part of the song with the intro that builds up and Daughter of the Dark God the second part is the climax. Really a missed opportunity. But regardless you REALLY need to cover more music from this game because it is so underappreciated.

It is not insane to link these two composers. Nishiki probably played Final Fantasy when he was younger, and he also works for Square - the same company Nobuo Uematsu worked for. On top of this, Octopath Traveler is a game that is a huge callback to those SNES Square JRPGs. You should listen to the entire soundtrack. It's banger and masterpiece after banger and masterpiece. One of the best video game soundtracks I have ever heard. I probably listened to it 100 times.

There's something really cool that Nishiki did with this soundtrack. I didn't really get it when I played the game because I'm not so musically inclined, but I saw a KZbin video on it. I'll probably find the video and post it in a reply because I think you'd find it fascinating, but to summarize: First of all, a bit about the structure of the game for context. Octopath Traveler is a game which is made up of 8 different stories of 8 different characters. Each character's story has 4 chapters, and each chapter has a boss fight. For these bosses, there are 3 boss themes (Every Chapter 1 uses Decisive Battle, Chapters 2 and 3 use Decisive Battle 2, Chapter 4 uses Decisive Battle 3)... Except Nishiki didn't make things so simple. See, every character has their own character theme. Nishiki took every character's theme and turned it into a unique introduction for boss battles in their own chapters. In a sense creating 24 unique boss themes. But this is impressive because Each intro is incredibly unique in order to match the character theme, and they're all very different from the boss theme they lead into. Different keys, tempos, and even time signatures. Nishiki had to manage to transition from intro to actual boss music without making any of it sound jarring, and he does so brilliantly. The video I mentioned goes into details with examples of how he did it
@geovaughan8261 Жыл бұрын
Nishiki doesn’t just reference Uematsu in this piece; he quotes him directly. The cello/guitar part you identified as Uematsu-influenced is pulled almost directly from Dancing Mad, and the ascending choral scales leading into the vocal solo are note for note from FFI’s battle theme. Nishiki is purposefully calling out the themes from the first and last pixel games in the FF series.

Though with the right set up you can easily basically one shot phase two, this set up is also really not hard to pull off and you dont need to be max level or anything.

The writing is problematic in that the writers had to cater to the multiple storylines of eight separate main characters and were thus limited in their interactions (in a scripted "choose your own adventure" kinda way) instead of concentrating their focus on a single or pair of main characters like a more straightfoward RPG would do. I can forgive the writers for that given the time constraints and monumental effort involved in writing dialogue combinations for so many main characters. The possible combinations for so many characters talking to each other are a lot!
