Composing a Narrative Self-portrait Painting (1/2) | Demonstration by Melisa Calabria

Melisa Calabria is an Argentinian painter who focuses on self-portraits and storytelling.
Having studied with Ricardo Celma and Odd Nerdrum, she underlines the importance of causality in her narratives, imbued with a dreamlike atmosphere of yearning and melancholy.
During her second stay at the Nerdrum Studio, she demonstrates the importance of composition and explains her method as she starts a new painting.
In this demonstration you will learn about:
• Developing an idea from a composition sketch
• Applying thinly when transferring the sketch
• Adding color to the the face (the most important element)
• Being aware of differences in values
• Painting on the whole surface "at the same time"
• Increasing contrast and adding a darker background gradually
• The possibility of big changes
• Adjusting transitions to get a soft totality
• Toning down one thing to emphasize another
• The appropriate movement to the psychological state of the figure

awesome, I follow her in Instagram also, THANKS! The lines in her sketch I know is called "Generic Armature grid" for composition. I like the use of black and red for the underdrawings, I use that also, it's like low chroma purple or caput mortuum. I tried using it for "dead colors" and it's awesome.

On the surface, these videos appear insightful, however, the incessant talking continuously shift's the artist from a right brain activity, to the left brain, as they try to explain what they are doing. This is damaging to the artist, and not optimal for the viewer. However, if the goal is to make videos, and money, I suppose that model fits. I would prefer that a painter be allowed to simply create, without interruption, and then later, they can dub over with an explanation, or interview type interaction. Perhaps the interviewer has become blind to his actions. He is continuously stopping artist mid track, and making them ponder very often immaterial questions. In so doing, their innate process is interrupted. Anyone who has played baseball, and yelled to an opposing batter "show us how you do it," may very well cause them to strike out, as they are now thinking about what they are doing, rather than doing it. Please consider modifying this.
