Hey Everybody,
We've been fortunate enough to work with some incredible musicians in our career, and Mike is definitely on that list! :)
Aside from being a prog-metal-fusion-djent(isNotAGenre) drumming legend, Mike is a super talented composer & educator.
In this video, Mike takes you through his methods for composing riffs and drum patterns while highlighting the advantages of using Beat Scholar to do so.
Aside from technicalities, Mike presents an in-depth view into the rhythmic inner workings of progressive genres and how he manages to play in some of the most interesting metal bands on the planet. (Monuments, Tesseract, Disperse, Periphery to name a few...)

Late to the party but Beat Scholar for life! Broke my insta-buy record in the proces too. 2 minutes after seeing the product, I had it on my system. Who needs a trial, when you suddenly understand the concept and realize that programming drums on a grid is kind of a silly thing to do. Thanks for this life changer. Now we NeuroF, Djent style!

Always great to see such a good showcase, I can't for the life of me skip such an opportunity to complain about how consistently convoluted Cubase is... Simple vst instrument armed for recording doesn't record into the file, for whatever reason. This DAW gets my goat every single day.

This is awesome and love it! I've been using beat scholar and Mindst drums. I've been trying to learn how to use the beat scholar plugin and not quite getting the timing right. I'm curious if these presets you're referencing is something we have access to (or should?).

I’m curious- I love the tool- super easy to understand, but I’m curious is it also possible for this to help you learn standard notation? Like if you’re feeling in for a band- should you already have standard notion under your belt before using something like this?

I’m beyond stoked to educate myself on this software and start creating. I have two issues with it so far. I have found zero instruction online or in the user manual on how to create a performance in Beat Scholar and then have Beat Scholar play the composition through another drum VSTin Logic Pro X. Also Beat Scholar won’t play any audio when I open it up in Logic Pro X. In Logic I select Software Instrument>Beat Scholar>Create>Open Beat Scholar>Hit play and it won’t play.

Hey! We just released an update to the Logic issue this morning, please grab it on our website. :) Regarding using it to control other plugins: You can load it as a MIDI FX if you checked it during the installation process (AU-MIDIFX) which you then load right before your other plugins in the chain. Feel free to come to our discord for more info!

Does anybody know how to route the separate hands/feet instances of Drum Scholar into a single drum instrument in Ableton? He does it in Cubase pretty easily, but all I can see for MIDI routing in Ableton is "MIDI From" selections, so I can only tell my drum instrument track to get MIDI from one instance of Beat Scholar at a time. Thoughts? Ideas?
@Modalics
@Modalics Жыл бұрын
So, in Ableton Live you'll need to open an extra MIDI track, that will take "MIDI From", say, the "Hands", and will "MIDI To" into the sampler channel. Then, the sampler channel can take "MIDI From" the 'Feet' channel, and it will mix both of them. Hope that helps!

This is all very cool but I cannot seem to get Beat Scholar working with any external 3rd party drum kits in Studio One and there is quite a lack of info on the web to solve this problem. Not using Cubase.
@Modalics
@Modalics Жыл бұрын
Hey Dan! To route MIDI in S1, the process is quite similar: 1. Open another track for the target VST. 2. Pick Beat Scholar as the MIDI input. Notice that: 1. This would only work with VST3 (not AU). 2. You might need to stretch the size of the channel as the MIDI inputs aren't visible by default Feel free to join our Discord if you have further questions!

How about the ability to import already existing midi patterns so they can be seen visually and edited?
@Modalics
@Modalics Жыл бұрын
That is something that would be rather difficult to do, as random midi in the wild will probably need a quantizing mechanism of sorts in order to be visualized in the Beat Scholar UI. Having that said we are thinking about how to implement midi import in a way that would make sense, but ATM we're a bit far from being able to do that.
@kahuna20001
@kahuna20001 Жыл бұрын
@@Modalics I was thinking it would need quantizing. As a model, Cakewalk does something similar when you transfer patterns from its sequencer to piano view. It just simply prompts you and allows you to pick the quantization value, which would suffice for my purposes. And note mapping wouldn't be a problem since you already allow editing that. Thanks for considering this.

Hey Guys. I managed to get this nearly working with reaper. Using 2 instances of BS on instrument channels. Routing the midi from both instances to another instrument channel with Ez drummer on it. My only problem is that when I ‘play’ BS with my midi keyboard to change the patterns it also sends the midi key note through BS in to EZ drummer. So when I play a note to play a pattern in BS it sends the midi through and plays a drum note in EZ drummer. Basically I just need to work out how to stop the note infomation from my keyboard at BS and just send the pattern output to EZ drummer. Any tips would be most welcome

@Modalics

It is important to mention that in Beat Scholar while you can add up to 16 lanes if you want to - a single lane can include multiple drums in it, so you can choose how you want to organize your lanes in a way that's ergonomic to your workflow. For example: Snare+HH on a lane, all toms on a lane, etc. But of course one drum per lane in 16 lanes is also possible, and we have zooming options to make it easier to work in that mode too.

Hi there! I have purchased Beat Scholar and I have just started using it. I have noticed that with Mike's presets it won't let me shift+drop in my DAW. To be specific, it works with the kick patters, where there is only the kick, but in all of the modules that have more that one swimming lane the shift+drop just does not work. Any quick fix? I am using Reaper by the way
@Modalics

Yes - this is annoying bug because some of his patterns have slashes ("/") in them. If you will rename them to not include the slash this will be fixed.
