Today I open a un-touched drum tracking session and start my mix process. After this I will most likely run the sounds thru some analog processing and into ¼ tape before officially chopping and packaging the new Sample Pack.
Shout out @digitalnic0 for letting me come over and record!

The "weird mids" were due to phase cancellation. Notice how the bass started going away when you brought up the weird overhead.
@vvundertone
@vvundertone 2 күн бұрын
You are right. While I tried my best to keep phase correct (visually) when tracking perhaps the mics being too close caused the issue. I will correct it before printing to tape for sure! Thank you

Great video dude, no compression on drums takes guts lol! Try MJUC if you dont love digital comps, it's a classic, 3 models in one, great on busses, and cheap! Kiive also makes very good compressors but pricey. Don't sleep on Analog Obsession either, huge catalog 100% free, tons of vintage goodness

Why do you dislike digital compressors? I've never heard a hardware compressor, so the Plugins I have sound fine for me. Curious to know your answer. Great video!
@vvundertone
@vvundertone 2 күн бұрын
I just think in the digital world some things don't quite stack up what they are modeled after. When I use plugin compression, something feels cartoonish and plastic about them. I feel like I can't push them too much because they start to sonically crumble. Hard to articulate, and could be because I record a lot with microphones rather than software instruments.

@@vvundertone It must be something you can only hear once you compare A and B, and it seems hard to explain. You explained quite nicely though, as I think I'm able to understand that. Gonna have to test that sometime! Thanks for the info. Have a great day.

Don’t you check the phase first?
@vvundertone
@vvundertone 2 күн бұрын
After the kits mic'd up I always check phase before officially recording just so I don't have to worry about it later. Despite everything visually being in phase someone did point out the overhead having issues. Even when you do your very best to maintain phase something can still happen! Its a constant battle.
@nantschev

I remember some mix guru always checking phase in the process. When you put plugins on, they can also change the phase?

@vvundertone
@vvundertone 2 күн бұрын
You know when I started editing this I almost deleted it because I am a perfectionist and the noise was printed in the screen capture. (forgot to mute a channel on my Apollo which had a cord with nothing plugged in) but a note on perfectionism and how it can hold you back, I am grateful I decided to push thru otherwise I wouldn't of experienced a much needed small win this week to motivate me to continue to do KZbin. I say all this to say its better to put out something in the universe flaws n all instead of chasing perfectionism which often leads to working in a circle.
