Mitres and butt joints on composite decks arnt usually done these days due to how much the boards expand and contract. Property looks epic though and love the videos being back. Cheers John

7:40 in the future take a gander at aluminium Y angle typically used to beef up a mitred tile niche box (soap box), it would give nice solid protection and means a less sharp mitre cut angle so the risers have an overall solider end to the boards. You can also grove or route out the back of both mitres glue a small flat bar a bit like a picture frame spline but internally then fix the treads down.

Great work James - the deck looks great ! I am about to build a deck and steps at my place with the same Alpine Ash product. What advise would you give for getting the steps and heights correct? Thanks mate!

Looks good mate. You could see the subfloor change colour from when you first put it down to when you covered it in. Im guessing you didnt do that project over a couple of weekends. A deck that size in hw would certainly get tiresome oiling every 6 mths and as you said you are saving a few hundred bucks every year on oil.

Haha, yep the joists went down 6 months before the decking. I get easily sidetracked 😂

does it retain more heat from the sun compared to timber? I'm looking at doing a pool deck with it but I'm in country nsw, so 40C+ summer days are common
@OurBuild5 ай бұрын
@@markwalkom4272 Yeah it's a few degrees hotter than timber, but a regularly oiled timber deck is also very hot under feet on a 40 + day 😁

Looks like a great install. I've been weighing up the composite deck for s while. Ive heard stories that the composite deck gets roasting hot in the sun even down here in melbourne. Pets cant walk on it and you cant walk bare footed. Would love to hear your experiences up in QLD?

Cheers Nathan. I think the heat argument is a little blown out of proportion. Id check the manufacturers technical details but form memory there darker colors are only a couple of degrees hotter in full sun. That said an oiled deck in the middle of summer is also going to burn your feet 😁 I haven't had an issue with it mate in terms of heat.

Now show the wife how much you saved by doing it yourself & buy a boat with some of those savings 😂
