Would love to see some videos on how you guys design it and order materials and all the other work that you guys do before you actually come to build the foundation. Cuz not a lot of content out there on KZbin. And it from the Perkins so would be great 🤣💪

Breaker boards work much better than butt joints over single joists. Basically multiple picture frames to break up the runs into equal sections. That way all the boards are equal length, expand and contract equally, and have a more solid place for the edges to land.
@royalconstruction80323 жыл бұрын
Yes. @perkins brothers…… Trex will not honor warranty if you use butt joints on single joists. They require a double joist and a total of ( 4 ) fasteners, 2 in each board.

glad that you added a Jaime channel!

It’s recommended that for trex,joists are doubled up everywhere there is a seam in order to get full bearing, trex is a lot flimsier than pt pinewood decking, this easier to bend and move, also a great idea to spray the ends of all trex decking with polyurethane to weatherproof. It will deteriorate faster than wood! I’m not knocking these guys, they did great, just informing anyone seeking a lasting deck

Butt joints in the field need blocking on either side of joist and dedicated clips on both boards (4 clips total). I use PT scraps ripped to 3” - 3.5” width and 7”- 8” length so there’s enough meat to fasten clips down. Should be in the install docs that come with the boxes, and don’t remember exactly but could be a warranty issue if you don’t add the blocking @ butt joints in field
@kingalthe1st1602 жыл бұрын
I'm addicted to your videos. Would love to see a herring bone pattern at the corners where each side of the deck connects. A bit more work, but really takes the look to the next level. Also, no joist hangers on the ledger? That's code where I am...

Use a parting board or do a herringbone pattern to eliminate butt joints. Also depending on your guys skill level could help you out to run everything long and cut with track saw after and install your picture frame last it will enable unskilled guys to do all the boards in the field and you’ll only be left with a few critical things for the more skilled guys. Love your channel been binge watching for couple hours now pretty amazing how many different trades you guys take on in house. We do everything exterior (footings, framing, roofing, windows/doors, siding, decks) and I thought that was a lot lol.
@tallpaul88803 жыл бұрын
When I installed this I rounded over all the butt ends and it gave a really nice finish look. Also I always frame for this 12” oc it will never dip between joists where 16” oc will over time in my experience. Love the content! ✌🏻🇺🇸

The round over idea is nice!
@kirkwilliamson3353 жыл бұрын
We use a joist protect tape on top of joist to increase life of joist as you are putting on composite w extended life might as well extend life of joist where screws penetrate the joist

I've never done butt joints/staggered butt joints on composite decking. Every 8', 10', 12', 16' 20, or ?, depending on the length of the deck, I run a deck board perpendicular/90° to the decking. Dividing the deck in half, thirds, or? I call it a parting board, and it eliminates butt joints. Which look bad. Especially on composite decking. It's more work and more framing, but it's definitely worth it.

I want you to put the deck on you're doing a fine job I work with a lot of old carpenters in my day and I can tell you have a lot of good qualities the only thing I want to mention that window seal that you put around the windows I believe you should have put it on the floor joists before you put the decking down it will never rot underneath the for choices and the decking take care now keep up the good work

Pro tip for the clip especially running the boards in with one person… temp set the clips secure to the board, pull the second board in temp set clips on the second board and the go back to drive the clips home on the first board. It lets the boards easily seat and especially if you have a low or high joist.

Pro tip: paint the top of the PT joists brown first before install. It takes minutes but looks better because you don't see the PT through the gaps. It also helps prevent rot and water off the joists. 'Even use some Asphalt emulsion if you want. You could have got 16 footers or 20 ft to make that span. Less but joints. Otherwise good work
@richardperkins20573 жыл бұрын
Do that if you want to void the trex warrantee. Use trex brand joist tape for the same affect but better protected
@slynn51383 жыл бұрын
Joist tape all the way!!! It amazes me how just about every deck build video on KZbin skips this step. Maybe it’s a form of job security for some builders…

Unless using the darkest color of decking available I always use a darker color as an accent for the picture frame. Usually recommend lighter colors as composites get really hot for bare feet if not under roof.

I have an older all brick home...(1978) with a rather large back porch that all the wood... is rotted... I've debated as to whether I want to remove 100% of it... and pour a concrete pad for the back porch... or I was considering going with pressure treated base boards and some type of decking... After watching this, I absolutely love how this looks and installs... So much so that I was going to pour a concrete front walkway from my driveway to the front door.....I'm wondering now how difficult this would be to lay down as a walkway if you will... Currently the walkway is brick that has been set so long that regardless of what I do I'm not removing it... it's settled in as much as it will ever settle... so my thought is to use Pressure treated Runners... leveled and square, and use this type decking for the walkway!!!

Little more work but 45ing the corners from house to post looks great! You can also take it up a level by using a different color band board around the outer edges and between the corner 45s too really accent the deck and give a "framed" appeal.....much as y'all did with the house siding.
