Mark Turnwald from Ohaupo in the Waikato is a dairy farmer on this 150-year-old family farm, deeply rooted in the region's dairy tradition.
With the challenges of Hamilton clay and consolidated peat soils, combined with the region's wet winters, pasture damage on his 104-hectare property became a significant concern. Mark needed a solution to protect his paddocks during winter and provide a sheltered space for feeding.
To address this, he installed two composting barns, each 18m wide x 80m long. This year, he is milking 360 cows and aiming for a production target of 190 milk solids.

"The cows are shiny and happy and fat in here. They are probably in the best condition we have had cows in winter." - Mark Turnwald, Ohaupo
