What kind of toilet do you use in your tiny and how does it compare to the Separett? Do you have new video ideas for me? Drop them below!

I've used both the Nature's Head and the Separett 9215. I prefer the Separett because I don't have to buy peat, noir, or sawdust and those things take up space and also emptying the Nature's Head is a pain in the butt.

I currently use a DIY compost toilet (bucket system) I purchased the sunmar toilet for my tiny home build because it is the only commercial toilet approved for my county. After opening it, I promptly returned it. Its HUGE. I will just continue with the bucket system for now, someday when Im much older I may go to a commercial one again. Ive read conflicting reports on many of them about ease of keeping them clean, clog free, and dumping. great video tho! Thank you for sharing

Microwave Full bath refrigerator wacher dryer combo..nice little thing..for emergencies home stereo system And I do not drink alcohol but For visitors I have a beautiful bar But we pay a price for all that. Our van is huge parking in a regular parking is not possible Unless is a huge parking the van is a 350 daully 170 extended 😬 So you guys know. is big

Thank you for sharing and explaining🙂. So it's basically an outhouse that's indoors. Cool👍. Growing up we used one. Was the popular thing back in the 70's in old houses. I'm planning to buy land and build a tiny house on it that's completely off grid. I'm watching all sorts of videos to get ideas because I'm am a fish out of the pond on this.

Haha, yes basically an indoor outhouse. Lol. But cleaner! The outhouse (some) uses water and chemicals if I'm not mistaken unless it's an offgrid one. I'm kind of newer to compost toilets myself. Ive never had any other one than the separett. I bet they're all a different experience! 😊🏡

Ya I'm just reading all this now & first thing I thought of with young couples moving in together and it sounds like a relationship killer! I'm perplexed that you can wash clothes take a shower but no one has figured out how to install a flushing toilet with a separate disposable container? Or if you're dumping it outside why Can't it be diverted to septic tanks located wherever you are? I guess you'd have to pay a disposal fee? I'm out on the tiny house thing! I'm sticking with my Apartment!

Nicely done! Informative and tasteful. Somehow it helps to know you are working with real waste, though hidden. After all, that's the idea. I just purchased a Separett Villa and am building up the courage to do what it seems very few have, to install it in my REGULAR HOUSE (master bathroom). I have a big garden and a 3-compartment compost setup and am looking forward to closing the nutrient loop. For your situation, I envision some day a business or city service that provides "night soil" pickup from campgrounds and elsewhere where folks can't compost their own.

Thank you!! Wow! That is something that is different and I havent heard of before! Installing a composting toilet in a regular house! And you are all set up with a compost system! Thank you! So you don't have to use any sawdust with this unit? Also, right now you say you're at a campground and just use their dumpster but let's say you're on the road for a few days. Where do you dispose of garbage? (I've never even been in an RV so I'm just starting to learn this stuff)
@TinyDreamer
@TinyDreamer Ай бұрын
With this unit, no saw dust is needed. I'm not longer at the campground and have been to 2 other places since then and now im on my land. The second and third place was also dumped in the trash. Since getting my land, I took the compost toilet out for now because I'm renting it out and I put a regular flush toilet in there. When I move back into the tiny house, I'll probably use the compost toilet again. I have never traveled on the road in my house, so I imagine you'd connect it to a gray and black water tank and dump at a dump spot before continuing ypur travels.

This toilet has a blue pipe that is stubbed out of the bottom of the house. It can be drained into a french latrine set up, connected to a a sewer or septic or be drained into a holding tank..size of your choice, so you can dump it after its filled. I believe the toilet you're talking about is the incinerator toilet. I think theres one called Incinolet.

@TinyDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
The urine pipe is stubbed out the bottom of the house and can ve disposed several different ways. In this spot I had it connected to the campgrounds sewer. Another spot, it ran onto the ground through pvc pipe. You can also create a french latrine set up where you put a filtration system of rocks and things below the urine pipe so when it drains into the rocks, it's being filtered. You can also connect it to a waste container and dump it somewhere. In my current spot on my new land, I have it connected to septic tank pipes.

How often do you have to empty it? I saw an add that said 4 to 6 weeks with a family of 4! Which seemed.... not true. I just have a DIY 5 gallon bucket in a box, with garbage bag, and use peat moss or another material to get the moisture out of the waste (also have a urine diverter too). It works pretty well, it's just not pretty LOOKIN. But I was just curious about how often you have to empty it, because for just me i'm emptying it every 2 weeks.. But I do take into account i'm adding the other material to it as well.
@TinyDreamer
@TinyDreamer 7 ай бұрын
I was emptying it every 3 weeks to 1 month. The compost bags say 3 weeks but since I was using plastic bags, I'd do it monthly. Since this video, I have replaced the compost toilet with a regular flush toilet for the convenience of my Airbnb guests. When I move back in I'll switch it back. When I do switch back I want to try to find a better way to compost the waste.

I have this same toilet in my 1200 SF house and I use it as a proper composting toilet full time. I like it a great deal. I would suggest that if you are bagging in lots of plastic as per this video, that you do not put it into the regular garbage and that you need to dispose of it at a proper waste station instead of putting human waste into a landfill. I only use proper compostable bags and follow the manufacturers instructions though I transfer the compostable bag into a waterproof slightly larger storage bin elsewhere in the yard to go through the composting process. I add a shovel of regular dirt ( microbes ), a composting starter and wood chips to accelerate the composting action. The urine is collected in one of three ways with diversion valves in the basement below. I have the option to direct it to the garden septic field, to a mulch basin or to collect it in a pail to mix 1 : 10 with water to use as high nitrogen fertilizer in the garden. Urine is sterile and a highly effective fertilizer for plants. A person does not need to be as fussy as shown in the video and proper disposal is really important. Composting processes kill the pathogens in the human waste. As long as the fan is running there is no discernable odor in the bathroom. it only takes about 5 - 10 minutes to clear odors from the room after changing out the toilet and plugging the fan back in.
@TinyDreamer
@TinyDreamer 5 жыл бұрын
Great advice! Looks like you have been using this compost toilet for way longer than me. I am still getting used to using it, caring for it, etc. But in the future when I get more settled in a place where I can actually DO what you are suggesting I do, then I will implement your ideas...until then I have to do it the way I know how. I dont even think we are allowed to divert our urine, even if mixed with water onto the campground floor (garden)....we MUST divert it into the sewer. So I'm just following campground rules. Like everything tiny there is a gray area we all have to watch for. Some people are even living illegally in their tiny and under the radar. For now, I choose to do what I can where I'm at. Then I will tweak it to how it's really supposed to be. Thank you for watching! :)

Bought two small houses on the lake, 600 sq-ft each. Renovated the first, only to find out the septic is in the water table (flooded), not good, and it's winter and I'm slated to move in at the end of the month. No way to put in a holding tank for at least 4 more months. So instead of pay an extra $8000+ and keep renting, I bought a Separett for my small house. Going to have to use it for at least 4-6 months. I spoke with the company who sold me it, he recommended having a good outdoor fire pit and burn the waste every 2 weeks, then all that is left is ash. I have a grey water system, so the pee-tube drains right into it. Wish me luck!

Sims thinking of telling my teenage boy to find a tree and take a shovel 😂😂
@TinyDreamer
@TinyDreamer 11 ай бұрын
Thats excellent!! A step in the right direction. It doesnt stink all the time, no. Only really when you change it out since you have to open it and be exposed to the waste. Until then, yes, the fan works to start the drying process and pull out any smell while it sits there. The urine is stubbed out the bottom of the house and can go into a holding gray water tank, or it can be diverted into septic or sewer system or in some cases you can create a french latrine of sorts and filter the urine through a series of rocks and sands to allow it to go into the ground. I have done all these except the holding tank. In one place we even let the water run onto the ground but it did create a mucky mess so the rocks and sand filteation would have been better. Since this video, i have changed out the compost toilet to a regular flush toilet for now because im renting the tiny house on Airbnb.

What about smell? Throughout the day and when actively changing bags?
@TinyDreamer
@TinyDreamer 3 жыл бұрын
It doesnt smell throughout the day...the fan takes care of that...but when you sit down and the back door opens, you can slightly smell fresher waste and yes you can absolutely smell it when changing it. I suggest wearing gloves because the smell lingers on your hands afterwards. Even after you wash them. So gloves help. The smell is also sensitive to gnats..if you have any liquidy waste or accidentally get urine back there it forms more odor and will attract bugs and mold. But if you do certain things to prevent that from happening it's much more manageable.

I have one question I feel is pertinent in considering buying this product. How often would you remove the waste and does it not smell?
@TinyDreamer
@TinyDreamer Жыл бұрын
The compostable bags that should be used need to be changed every 3 weeks. If you use a regular garbage bag, it could go longer. Yes, it does smell when you change it. But that's the only time you really smell it unless liquids have gotten back there and bacteria starts forming.

I was about to ask about where the liquid goes, lol. This one looks like a decent compromise between full on composting and a cassette toilet (the one with the container for liquid that you haul out and empty separately). Seems like this is what I should go for when I get my place, rather than the Nature's Head...
@TinyDreamer
@TinyDreamer 5 жыл бұрын
The urine is diverted out the bottom and I have a hose connected into the sewer. The other options for urine diversion with this toilet are diverting it into a hole of rocks to filter it or to connect to a grey water tank and empty it regularly. I preferred not having to empty anything. 🙂

" out of sight, out of mind. @@aureas i thought the same, it doesn't seem right to trap ur waste in a bag that probably might never break down for the waste inside to decompose. And dumping it into a dumpster never sounded right, it could rip and then there's poo everywhere..feel sorry for dumpster divers. If you can go and dig ur waste somewhere in dirt would be more ideal i think.

Regarding the funnel - I've helped numerous people solve this issue. You won't need a funnel if you sit more upright on the toilet. What happens is when women lean forward on a toilet, the pelvis tilts back, and pee goes back into to solids area. If you sit upright, pee will normally go slightly forward, and all will be good. Guys need to either sit, or aim for the forward section of the bowl. I stand up and pee in mine.

Oh wow! You stand up?! 😯 how do you not get urine to splash in the back?...do you squat while standing to be closer to the toilet? Do you have the separett? And lastly...I have tried all kinds of things and it never fails..my urine still goes in the back. I will try your suggestion now.. Thank you!

I bought a Separett for my fishing cabin in northern Michigan, but have not installed it yet. The framing around your toilet looks pretty narrow. If you were installing / building in the area and had as much space as you needed, would you have made the area bigger ? How about smells either inside or is there any smell that ever goes outside but then gets back in through an upper window for example ?

I think the space is narrow as well. It's hard to get in there to clean and it's hard to take the toilet apart in that small space. I'm wondering if they put the toilet in before they built a wallfor the shower..I'm not sure. As far as smells, It used to smell outside in the area that the vent was in so since this video I have routed the vent up 10 feet. However, now the vent fan isnt strong enough and the smell is coming back into the house so I have to get a stronger inverter to plug to a more powerful fan to be able to push the odors up 10 feet and out. Until then, I'm keeping the bathroom vent on, the toilet vent on, the window open and a scent mister on to mask smells. Sometimes I'll walk in the house and I smell it but most of the time I dont. It does sometimes come through an upper window as my egress window is right next to the top of the vent now. Before, it still wafted up to my bedroom loft window from the first floor.

Question: does the waste bag goes with the regular garbage or it is treated as biohazard material? What's the right way to discard the waste?
@TinyDreamer
@TinyDreamer 4 жыл бұрын
It differs on where you go. Some will throw it away in the dumpster. Although not really allowed to...elderly, children and animal waste all go in the dumpster so human waste shouldn't be any different..but it is fir some reason. The correct way to dispose of the waste would be to use composting bags for a 3 week period and then place the bag of waste into a personal outdoor dirt pile or compost bin. This toilet starts the composting process but you dont mix any pete moss or filler in it like the Natures Head Composting Toilet.

There's only a smell when liquid gets in the back container and sits there. The fan doesnt allow it to dry out fast enough and bacteria and mold will start to form and attract bugs. So to keep the smell away I suggest a funnel for women and men to sit down and aim forward! If it''s just waste and no liquid in the back there is no smell at all! When you change it you do smell it.

I have used a Separett Villa 9210 120volt composting toilet for 3 years in my tiny house. Here is what I think. 1. There is no way to completely clean the bottom under the turntable. Every couple bag changes I literally give my toilet a shower and wash it all out. 2. After some time the fan blades get dusty and vibrate. Unless you take apart the fan motor housing, you can’t clean it. 3. And most importantly, there is obviously no Pee trap. If the wind blows it blasts down the vent and you get to pee all over yourself. It is better than nothing I guess but it is far from a perfect waste system.

I've read someone saying that in order to not have smells, they need to change the bag every 3-4 times they go to the toilet. In this case one can just as well use a DIY bucket and all kind of toilet, 3-4 times it's way too often. It seems that there's no good toilet solution for tiny mobile houses...

Some work for some people but not others. I dont think I could do a Batures head or even a DIY. I feel since it woukdnt have a fan, it woukdnt dry out. But idk much about the DIY style compost toilet. I have been changing mine out maybe 2 times a month. I cant wait for the land to compost correctly. Then maybe I can bring it out sooner so it diesnt cause problems inside the house with bugs, smells, mold.

@@TinyDreamer Could it be that Separett added a fan in more recent versions, and older ones didn't have it? Anyway, 2 times a month doesn't sound bad, I'd say, I could live with that.

One day when I have my Own Bus Home, I will buy this. Hopefully this will never have a high cost/price for my dream Bus Home. 🥰🤭🥺

That's awesome! These toilets run about $1100. I imagine there are cheaper ones but this toilet is pretty nice. I recently switched the compost toilet out for a regular flush toilet so I can rent it out on airbnb. When I move back in I may or may not switch it back but I still have it.

Are the bags biodegradable?

The bags that come with the separett composting toilet are biodegradable and you change them out after 3 weeks of use. I was using them at first and trying to get the most use out of them but then all of a sudden the bag seemed to be getting thinner and I didnt want to take the chance of the bag breaking due to thinning out and starting the composting process. Lol. So I'll use plastic kitchen bags until I have a better way to dispose of the waste in a composting bag. I have to take my trash to the dump so it's easily for me to wait longer than the required 3 weeks. So I do a month.
